This early S has been in Richard Sutliff's possession for over 20 years. Here's some car history as reported by Richard.

"It was manufactured in December 1972 as a limited option 911S. In the early/mid 1980's, I converted it to track use. It has been a club racer for most of it's life. I have raced it in SCCA Regional Races, POC & PCA Time Trials, SCCA Vintage Races and other events for the past 20 years.

The 2.4L 911S 190HP, mechanically fuel injected engine and 915 transmission are completely stock. The suspension has been upgraded. The brakes are stock aluminum (front) S brakes. The lightweight chassis includes aluminum rear trailing arms, a factory lightweight aluminum  rear deck lid, fiberglass front and rear bumpers, and a lightweight interior. The unique SC/Carrera rear fender flares are 1Ú2" wider than standard to accommodate race tires."

Some additional racing background:

"In the early 1980's I had been running a '72T in various Club racetrack events including PCA Time Trialing. About 1985 I purchased this light yellow '73S. It was a little tired, and the paint was faded, but it was a real 1973 "S". It's original 2.4L S engine had been rebuilt by Lukes & Shorman a few years earlier, but the transmission was bad. I bought it for track use and within a couple of weeks had replaced a bent trailing arm and rebuilt the transmission in order to get it out on the track. Picture 1 is of me running it at Willow Springs at a POC event in the mid 1980's about two weeks after I bought it. No flares, stock engine and suspension, hastily taped on numbers and class designation…but it ran great.

I improved the suspension but left everything else stock for a couple of years and ran it anywhere I could including PCA and POC Time Trials, and even Ford Shelby open track events. After a few years I wanted to get more serious with the car and a good friend, Gary Crandall, installed rear flares and lightweight front and rear bumpers. I requested that Gary widen the flares slightly to fit race tires and he did a beautiful job. They are 1Ú2" wider than stock SC/Carrera flares. I also upgraded the suspension at that time but left the 2.4L S motor and 915 transmission stock. Of course I installed a roll bar, race seat and competition seat belts along the way.

By the late 1980's I wasn't getting any younger and I decided that if I was ever going to do real racing it was now or never. I signed up for SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) racing school and used my trusty yellow '73S to get my SCCA competition license. I ran several SCCA races in the car and it was very competitive (pictures 2 & 3)…and yes, in the SCCA you race rain or shine (picture 3). However the '73S didn't fit well into any San Francisco SCCA Region race class, so I reluctantly retired the car in the early 1990's and went on to race V8 cars for a number of years. The yellow '73S mostly sat in the garage and got occasional weekend drives during that time, but my real focus was on racing and so the '73S mostly sat while I raced a V8 Camaro Z28.

Then in the mid-to-late 1990's a friend, Glenn Hills, called to ask if I would bring the yellow car out and run it in an SCCA race at Laguna Seca. Back in went the roll bar, competition seat and belts and the old yellow '73S was back on the track. (pictures 4 & 5). I ran the car in a number of Vintage races for several years (there's been a picture of my yellow '73S next to a red '67S at the start of a Vintage race at Thunderhill on the Registry photos page for some time.) I had a lot of fun Vintage racing. Because you don't have quite the pressure of Regional or National SCCA racing it's very enjoyable…and cars get damaged a lot less frequently too!

I'm not actively racing the '73S now. However, I did run it at Sears Pt. about a year ago. The racetrack is definitely the place to enjoy an early 911S! Picture 6 is the way the car looks now. Picture 7 was taken by Sherwood Lee at the RGruppe gathering in Monterey in May, 2004."
