Car Fire........where to start; 1972 T Targa MFI

Driving down the boulevard, warm day, loss of power, slight smoke through the rear grill, wouldn't restart. See photos for end result. Able to restart once cooled down several hours later. Restarted and idled perfectly several days later. No time to investigate further.

She had been backfiring, kind of an intermittent clank or pop on the right side, intake side, right bank of cylinders. Ran hot that day, wouldn't idle well, did minor timing adjustment after which she ran, cooler and idled well but then this event happened.

MFI pump was rebuilt 5-7 years ago.
Linkages and air flow were proper.

    I don't have an LM2.

Damn. I can't give any mechanical advice but this should be an insurance matter - if you can relate it to a sudden event or failure rather than anything by way of gradual deterioration. Talk to your broker about this.

I also suggest having a look at parts for sale on The Samba - someone has a complete filter housing for sale there now off an MFI car - he may have other bits as well.

    Best of luck.

I think you were lucky if the fire was contained to the airbox! Does this car have the spray bar cold start system in the airbox?

    Very lucky.

And, with plastic stacks, the cold start is down in the stack not the air box.

The Upshot: time for a performance build to accommodate boring out the burned stacks!

Yes, I know I'm very lucky indeed. Hadn't been think insurance but I'll give Hagerty a call next week. Mr9146 is correct on the location of the cold start injectors which are lower in the stack. And yes a performance built may be in her future. Any one want a fun project?

Any other thoughts on what might have gone wrong? I'm thinking there is a broken or leaky intake valve on cylinder 5.

    Best,

I would check compression/leakdown. That would tell you something about the internals on that bank.

If nothing shows up, then I would check the cold start system, in particular the solenoid on top of the filter console, for proper operation. Doesn't matter where the fuel enters, airbox or stacks, as too much at the wrong time is too much at the wrong time...

What about a bad fuel injector?

Backfiring is most often from a mal-adjusted microswitch. Do you have a copy of MFI Check Measure Adjust ?
Usually the microswitch would be an exhaust fuel dumping issue, but you never know. See this thread. http://ww.early911sregistry.org/foru...iring-Question

Thanks to all for the tips. I've got the CMA.

I'll start by evaluating plugs, wires, distributor, fuel injectors, compression and leakdown, and certainly the microswitch.

Now all I need is TIME! Hopefully some will materialize in the next few days.
