    Can You Repair a Turn Signal Stalk That Does not Cancel?

    I know we all have them - those darn turn signals that don't cancel after a turn is completed. Or won't stay engaged when left or right is selected. Can the internal mechanism of the turn signal be repaired to make it like new again? Or are there replacement parts available to fix this issue? Or is this just wishful thinking...?

    There is a collar/ring on the back of the steering wheel which should contact the arms/arm of the switch when engaged to turn. I carefully tweaked it out, the collar, with needle nose pliers, trial and error til I had success. The metal on metal contact wears so just shortened the space. Maybe a drop of solder on the arm or JB Weld, anything to get contact again. As far as not staying engaged, look for a broken or stretched out spring. That could be the culprit. If it is wear repair will be difficult. That's all I know. There are good repairs being done on 356 directional switches. Try the 356 Registry.

    I have the problem of the Right turn signal not staying on when you select it. I replaced the springs with no change. After lots of inspection, I determined several things were wrong.

    1. The right turn part of the mechanism was more worn than the left turn. Careful lubrication (I used a thin silicon grease) made it engage and stay on better, but it still is not as good as the left turn.

    2. The 'cancel' collar (on the back of the steering wheel) has a raised section switches off the turn signal when you straighten up the wheel. Mine was very slightly out of alignment, so I spent about an hour making minute adjustments with some small pliers until it was correctly engaging with the turn signal mechanism is both directions.

    3. The 'cancel' collar raised section had a groove worn into it by the turn signal mechanism from the years of turning the wheel. The above tweaking sorted this out., and now both left and right turn signals are operating correctly.

    I have this exact same problem with my 914-6 and will be having it fixed shortly.
    I checked out the prices on various sites and,if you can find an OEM switch,they are the best part of $400.

    Clean, lube and some adjustments to the springs can often cure this.
