    Wurth gas tank finishes

In an attempt to find a gas tank for my '72, I have acquired a pair of original tanks. The obvious difference is the color. The tank on the left is a '73.5 CIS tank and the tank on the right is from a low mileage '70. At what point did the tanks switch from the dark gray/black to the tan color? I'm trying to find the correct one for my '72 but the more I learn about these cars, the more I realize I don't know. My car is a jan. of '72 build. Thanks in advance to all who can help out.

I believe the one on the left has been sitting out in the sun and faded.
Definitely up through '73 used the darker schutz. It's almost an olive color.

My 1973.5 gas tank was originaly closer to the color of the one on the left. I think there is a thread on it somewhere.
    Found it. http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...-proper-finish

Here is a picture of the bottom of the tanks. It looks as though the 73.5 tank may have faded a bit on top. The bottom shows it to be a light gray but still quite a difference from the '70 tank. So is the finish on these tanks referred to as a Wurth finish or a Schutz finish?

Here's a bad pic of a very original '73 S tank. Notice the grey areas before it was sprayed with Cosmoline. I believe it was the Cosmoline that gave them the olive color.

So it would appear that '73's all had the same light gray finish on their tanks. I vaugely recall '72's having the same finish. So they must have switched from the dark gray to the light gray somewhere between 1970 and 1972. Anybody with pics from an original '71? Thanks for pics Frank.

'71 looks exactly like my '73 pic.

BTW: It's not grey. It's olive.
