    pepita/houndstooth durability?

I'm getting ready to get my seats recovered and was planning to use Autos International's German vinyl with houndstooth inserts. I mentioned this to a friend and he pointed out that some houndstooth fabrics are thin, so not very durable. Also, there's the problem of having it stay clean over time. I'd like to hear others' experience with the durability specifically of the AI houndstooth fabric, and any issues with keeping it looking clean over time.

I have found the wool dog tooth very durable. Do not go for a drive just after rolling around on the garage floor after a valve adjust. Change your pants or throw down a towel. If you vacuum the dirt out a couple of times a year and clean you should have no problem. My original '73 Tartan wool seats are spectacular after all these years.

You should use a material that has had a rub test. I think the material recently offered by ClassicFX on this board has had a 40,000 repeat rub test.
So proven to be automotive seat use, and not for curtains !

rub test is one thing... the other is just the ounce per sqm... the original fabric was about 690 gramms per sqm ...if you check with upholstery fabrics most start with 350 and only durable come up to more . . 590 should be the min weight for it.

eric had definitely very very nice woven perfect material...

to keep wool material clean is just a matter of not eating ice cream in the car and don t allow your children to have chocolate fingers touch everything...and clean the own fingers after checking the oil...

this in mind it will stay clean, no matter what weight or rub test

I am NOT a seat guy ... yet But for those of you, that where at the Stuttgart show last week, did you see the Recaro stand! , I did :-) and spoke to a older guy, that have been there for ages , we spoke of the Pepita and he said yes in the beginning it was 100% wool ,but they change it after a few years to 80% wool / 20 % Poly due to the problem Haul mention , wool was difficult to clean, so was 100€ wool really original .. until when , I had the impression that the guy at the Recaro stand
knew what he was taking about

I have to admit I have no statistics, but "Pepita Checked Cloth" is on the CofA of every SWB 911 I've ever owned (all one of them). It was a zero-cost option for 911s (not zero cost for 912s) and it was on some of the early road test cars. I've also seen it on a lot of cars that I believe to be original, or at least restored to original.

My belief is that it was relatively popular, particularly for black interiors.

Guys, thanks for the informative posts. Lots of good info and advice. I've got a couple of questions into AI about their houndstooth, and I'll post here when I hear back.

I talked to AI and their houndstooth is 690 g/sqm, and a mixture of 80% wool and 20% polyester. I will probably order the houndstooth inserts. While not a perfect match to the original, neither is the car.
