Thread: Heater Control Panel Removal

    Heater Control Panel Removal

I know that removing the heater control panel means disconnecting cables under the hood and unbolting the panel mount itself from the firewall. Would seem possible that with cables disconnected, you could pull the panel out of the dash six or eight inches, enough to unscrew the clamps holding the cables to the panel, without pulling the cables thru the firewall. This would let me repair the panel light sockets. Anyone know if this can be done?

Are you trying to get light to the blue and red lights? Oh just saw '74. I don't know on a '74.

Two whites I think and a red. Yes. I've been there before, but didn't get the panel out far enough to do much.

On the 73 the sockets are on a wire like some early gauge lights. Then once the bulb is installed the whole shebang is pressure fit into a fixed socket on the back of the panel. I did mine from under the dash. The blue is for the fan. The red is only for cars with aux heating. If your fixed socket on the panel is broken then I don't know. Probably what you are doing with removal. The bulbs are tiny and same for the ashtray light.

I don't think that is feasible. Sounds good but the cable ends have a S bend and really need to be rotated a lot to be removed, I don't think you could do it with out putting a permanent kink in the cable and housings. You should be able to do whatever you need from underneath? Guessing a AC vent is in the way?

Thanks. Underneath doesn't work. I don't think there is anything in the way but you just can't reach the lights. My problem is that the bulbs won't stay where they are supposed to. So I really need this thing on a bench to find some way to secure them in position.

If you look carefully, there is a flat on the socket. Line that up with the flat on the fixed socket on the panel and it should stay put. That is how it is on mine anyway there is only one way it will stay in, otherwise it pops out like you describe.

    James,
I replaced mine on my '74. Looked really difficult but detaching the cables, at the ventilation valves, made it bearable. ( I tied a string around the cables, before pulling them through the firewall, help with reinstall)
I marked the cables for location and orientation on the valve levers to make assembly easier. I added lower wattage bulbs to help with the
socket distortion from the heat. I also used a heat gun to get the sockets back in shape, installing an old bulb to help with the forming.
I placed a tie strap around the socket and slowly tightened it as the plastic socket softened. Left the tie strap installed to prevent
    the bulb from falling out.
    Good luck,
    Tony
