Need Help with Ignition Switch Install

I am replacing my entire ignition switch and have removed the old one. When trying to install the replacement I cannot get the end that sits against the steering column to fit into the bracket that is there. There is a screw that gets tightened up against the bottom of the switch (see depression in switch where screw tightens into). This extra piece protruding from the end of the switch makes the switch too wide to fit into the bracket on the side of the steering column. I have measured it and there is no way it will fit.

I noticed the one I had removed had the protruding piece ground off (second picture shows the part that was ground off) so it would fit. Do I need to grind it off. I don't understand why the end does not fit. Am I doing something wrong? I have a '70 and the part #'s on both switches is the same. I am at a loss.

The part number on the ignition switch is 911 013 011 01. Is this the wrong switch for a '70 911? Has anyone else replaced their switch and didn't have this problem? As I said, I'm at a loss why the end of the switch doesn't fit into the bracket, and the bracket isn't something one can bend. It is thick metal.

On an earlier locking type, like on my 66, the piece is not present.

So apparently that was introduced somewhere after.

For model years through ,71 the PET shows a switch housing without the boss for the screw lock. For '72 on they show a different part number with the note: "It is necessary to rework". I am assuming that your steering column does not have the screw that locks this in place. I am not sure when the design was changed to the kind with the boss as on your switch. Apparently after 1975. Note that the raised number on the housing is not the part number, it is the part number of the casting, which serves for many different part numbers.

Thank you. I appreciate the comments. My steering column does have the screw for securing the switch in place. Thanks also for clarifying the part number on the casting. The casting must be for a later year. I will probably just grind off the boss then.
