    1965 Door Check Strap Rebuild

    Hi Guy's,

My original 1965 door check straps are a little tired and could do with a rebuild or replacement. Can they be stripped and rebuilt? There seems to be a white/now yellowish piece of hard rubber/plastic where the strap travels through. Can this be replaced by carefully bending the ears straight?

    Many thanks
    David

By "door check strap" do you mean the assembly that keeps the door from opening too far and attaches to the car between the two door hinges? PET calls it "901.531.035.20 DOOR SUPPORT"

Mine doesn't have a piece of hard rubber/plastic where the strap travels through. I don't see any additional part on PET.

901.531.035.20 is widely available (even on Amazon) but not exactly cheap.

Maybe you're referring to something else, if so can you give more information?

    I rebuilt mine awhile ago.
Disassemble completly, including the tabs holding the plastic parts.
Remove any paint on the arm. Try not damage the finish.
Flip over the inner plastic pieces (to put the un-worn side inward).
Add a new piece of rubber behind the plastic part.
Cut the rubber just large enough to improve the 'pinch' on the arm.
    Made a big difference.
    That's all folks...

Yup, that's it. Check Strap / Door Retainer / Limit Stop, all of the above.

This is the plastic piece that the strap travels through. One of mine is broken and I'd have to strip it our for a re-plate anyway. Is it available or can I feel some replacements coming on?
