    Steering tube substitution? early LWB 911 347 073 00

    will this steering tube work in a 1973 LWB car? it is the 1984 version with a p/n of 911 347 073 03 (not sure if they were used 1974-89) or how long but I figure they would be easier to find than the 00 LWB version and maybe I could switch over to the easier to replace bearings)

    Yes, that tube will work perfectly in your 73, because it ain't what you think it is. It is a 73 column. A 74 or later column will not work in your 73. The shorter one in my picture is actually a 74 or later. When you put the two of them together it becomes apparent that they are not interchangeable.

    Thx - that pic is from a European parts site and they claimed it was the later 03 version.

    Any ideas on how to take out the steering tube? I guess the shaft inside it has to come out also?

    (I've heard it is a horrendous job...)

    dunno - just what I've seen on der internet trying to piece together how to remove it - maybe the shear bolts(?); maybe the knee piece??

    If you have the whole unit pictured in my post, there is no need to take it apart. Yes, they are a bitch to take apart, but if it ain't broke don't fix it. Also beware of internet sites that give out BS info. Would you buy a part from the bozos that posted that picture? It appears that they don't have a clue what they are doing or selling. I'll bet they are convinced that it is very rare and very valuable, though.

    I need to take it off the car to remove the bearing closest to the steering wheel. It seems a PO slammed the wrong bearing in there.

    The only bearing that goes bad is the one near the steering wheel and it can be changed in 5 minutes. No removal required. Are you sure it is bad? Does your steering wheel wobble? If it does, it is probably not the bearing. You are missing a bushing on the back of the wheel. OK, I am done assuming. Am I on the right track, though?

    Jim is VERY knowledgeable but I think he might be missing what you are trying to do.

    The steering column is not overly hard to remove from the car or hard to take apart. Yes you need to remove the sheer bolts, (drill and use bolt extractor) then there is only the 3rd bolt. The hardest part is the laying on your back with drill shavings falling in your eyes. Then the column can be disassembled, remove clips tap on shaft etc. Keep track of the order of things, it can be a little confusing. Since your there, I would replace or rebuild whatever you can.
