Elgin Cams: Modified S Cam for '73 2.4L?

Can anyone share their experiences with the Elgin modified S cam installed on a 2.4S engine? I'm interested in the before/after value for the money. My understanding is that it broadens the power curve by about 2000RPM and ups the top end ~10-15HP. I'm mostly looking for better relaxed driveability out of my S (the extra top end couldn't hurt either). Note: its my daily driver, not a dedicated track car (some AX & rally's).

Any general experiences about Elgin cams in general also welcome.

What are valve lift and duration numbers?

  3. #3
    Garth,

Uhmm, let me try to get this right (I'm not a mechanic).

The spec sheet has two lines, one for Intake and one for Exhaust

    Valve Lift
    Intake - 0.474
    Exh - 0.438

    Lift @ overlap is 4.5MM

    Is that what you needed?

    Duration is given in degrees.

    S cams are as follows:

intake lift .459 duration 267 deg.

exhaust lift .396 duration 235 deg.

The lift numbers you posted are the same as for a GE 40 cam which has more lift than an S cam but with less duration. Maybe the modified S cam is a S spec cam in duration with GE 40 lift that would allow more flow but still match the S MFI pump.

cam companies are changing at what lift duration is measured. be sure to compare apples to apples.

Resurrecting this thread, since I am in the same boat ( see, I did some research )

My cams have a little pitting so they are on their way to Elgin to be repaired. Does any opinions on this mod 10 years later? I have a stock 2.4S that is being rebuilt at a glacial pace.

    Thanks,
    Neil

I'd keep the S cams: originality, the real 'S' character, and will make your life infinitely easier with the MFI...

Any modification to the cams will require the installation of an Innovate, Air Fuel Ratio Meter to get the MFI just right. I went with the Dougherty DC 30 cams on my 2.4 E. Basically an E cam with the associated torque but more lift so it breaths better at the top end. Could not be happier.

I have the Elgin modified S in a 2.7 with PMO's, so can't address the mfi issue. THe modified S is a great cam for weekend track use, with a wider power band than the normal S. Elgin makes a quality product. But I would think it a poor choice for a street machine unless you like to spend a lot of time in the 5-7000 rpm band; the E-variants produce a lot more oomoph at 2500-4000 rpm where you are most of the time when driving around town.
