Can any one come up with the GOOD Bosch number for a 73 RS Carrera distributor, the number in the book is...
0 231 169 011 ... it has been superceded

I have my 2.4-S diszy ... 0 231 169 005

... and I have a diszy from Roger G. ... 0 231 184 001

The question is, WHAT distributor would you buy NEW for your 2.7 RS motor? ... (if you didn't want to recurve your own)
... and where the hell would you buy it... right now

I don't know a fraction of what you guys know, but if that was my question, I'd call Andial. If they didn't have what you need on the shelf, they could always walk 100 feet across the parking lot and ask Mr. Springer. (Thier former partner, but you knew that :D )

But the call to Andial had me goin in the same circles as everywhere else...

All I'm lookin for is the exact superceded Bosch part number for the 2.7 Euro RS distributor... it could have made it all the way to 74'-76' Euro Carreras...

Until I find the answer, I'll be tryin the distributor that Roger has given me (which number indicates it is from a 75'-77' CIS 911-S)

If anyone has a recent RS project please tell me what distributor you used.

Chuck, Warren Hall, Early S man, on a pelican post said my "RS" distributor is the one used on later than '73 EURO RS's, and is the proper one to use on a 2.7 RS of any year. I don't know where Jeff Gamroth got it, because I do let the shop supply parts when possible. I still have the box. The Porsche part number is
911-602-031-FX. The Bosch number 0 231 184 004 seems to have been superceded to 0 986 237 017-090 .
The latter number is printed in bold black on the box, the first number I gave is in smaller type with an arrow curving up to the bold black number. I'm not very good with part numbers, but hope this info helps. If you are still having no luck down there, you might give Jeff Gamroth a ring at Rothsport in Tualatin, Oregon. The number there is 503-885-9626.

They're all pretty close in spec. If I were you, I'd forget buying an extra distributor. Use the one you have ('73 S). When you get the engine together, have a dyno shop perform a spark test (plot advance per horsepower/torque curve) for optimum spark advance (I should do this myself).

Any factory advance curve will be a compromise, suited to work with variations in build tolerances and available fuel octane.

Here's what I get from the factory manuals. I converted the charts from distributor degrees to crank degrees and engine RPM for ease of comparison and do not include initial (static) ignition timing:

2000S engines (66-68 911S) Bosch dist. 0 231 159 002 (page L39, orig. factory manual, Vol. II):

7000 19-25

2.4S/2.7S except Carrera (page 9.3-2/3, Vol. VI, printed '73):

2.7 Carrera (page 9.3-2/7, Vol. VI, printed '73):

Observation:
Can we assume a 2.7 Carrera is the RS engine (same as Euro RS)?

If so, the early S and 2.7 Carrera distributor curves work with a little more initial static timing than the regular 2.4/2.7 engines. Variations between all three may or may not be optimal based on your particular engine but will work okay with factory spec engines.

BTW, I'm using the 2000S distributor in my 2.7 set at 10 initial advance, but not optimized.

The following data is from the spec books and factory service manuals:

All '72 models, and some early '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.003 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.004 -- 7100 rpm rev limiyrt
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.005 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

Using 'mirror image points' ... later '73 models used:

2.4 T --> Bosch 0.231.169.008 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter
2.4 E --> Bosch 0.231.169.009 -- 7100 rpm rev limiter
2.4 S --> Bosch 0.231.169.010 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter

1974 model CIS 2.7 engines used the '73 T distributor ... subsequently replaced by Bosch 0.231.184.002 -- 6500 rpm rev limiter

1973 RS 2.7 engines used Bosch 0.231.169.011 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter dist. with quicker advance curve and more initial advance setting, later replaced with Bosch 0.231.184.004 -- 7300 rpm rev limiter ... used 'mirror-image points' with respect to the '73 models!!!

Chuck, a 1974 European Carrera distributor is probably still available through Porsche NA from Germany. That is what is in my '72S.

So far, I'm still runnin my 2.4-S dist. ... we set it with about 2 more degrees of advance than stock.

I still have Roger's 2.7-S dist. to play with...

We did the second valve adjust/oil change just last Sun. so the break-in is finally over :) ... and the car is runnin GREAT!!!

When I have a little more time I'll start thinkin about a 'performance tune' where we diddle pump a little and play with the dist./timing some more...

Right now I just want to DRIVE THE CAR ...

We'll talk about this some more... hope to see ya this weekend

Understood (painfully)

Mine is running and undergoing debugging and tuning by Wayne (needed new CD box, MFI tuning, etc... all expected), and some final touch up paint issues by Luis (paint was done in June, and has gotten a few scratches in the shop since then - Duh!). Anyway, it's looking good and I JUST WANT TO DRIVE IT TOOOOOO!

HAVE A GREAT TIME AT D'S. It's too far for me, and I've got to take the kids to their IceSkating lessons, all the while thinking of you guys srounging NOS parts, licking your drool off other guys cars, etc... Have fun!

Anyway, I'm real curious about the various ignition options as twin's are in my future (not near but maybe in a year after my wife forgets how much this has cost so far). I'm in data gathering mode is all right now. I respect your and PWD's experience a lot, so keep sharing!
