    Chassis Number Locations

With people talking about VIN tag damage causing grief with registering their cars as well as the controversy with the availability repro VIN plates it has me wonder about doing a total restoration on a chassis.

I am going to be doing a large amount of panel replacement and then a dash–out respray of the chassis.

I have heard of secret VIN numbers on these cars that the DMV uses to investigate cars with shady history. Does anyone know of the location of all of the numbers on a chassis?

The ones I am aware of are:

The stamped VIN above the gas tank
The Aluminium VIN tag by the hood latch
The Colour Code Tag on the hinge pillar
The Decal on the latch panel
There is a stamp behind my fresh air blower that will be masked off before painting.

Does anyone know of other identifiers on the chassis that I should be aware of?

I believe there's one under the dash in the area where the kneepad goes.

The 7 digit # is stamped under the radio on the lower portion of the dash, behind the right side knee pad.

The # for your car should be 110XXXX (I think).

There are also a couple of production numbers written in chalk or grease pencil under the dashboard and IIRC behind the glove box area. Porsche can verify that the production number matches the VIN.

US cars also had a small VIN tag riveted to the driver's A piller.

    Thanks guys,

It appears to be no numbers in the areas that get replaced over the years.

Nothing in the pans, rockers, suspension areas....

Thought it would be worth while to preserve them if the were any.

What is the # under the radio? Is that the actual vin #, or some other code?

Tom, it's a production number and should match the number written in grease pencil underneath the dash.

    Doors are also marked

Last three numbers of the vin and S are stamped into the doors beneath the interior cover.

At least they are on the '67 model.

Doors are not stamped on later models - at least not 73, this likely ended with LWB cars.

Here's where the wax pencil numbers are - there is also a painter's signature scratched into the black paint. Left IP corner, under the pad.
