What does BS AU 48 above Vin plate mean???

Hi - i'm reposting this subject in the hope someone out there knows the answer

I have a RHD 73E Targa down here in NZ. Above the chassis /vin plate in the Luggage compartment is a further plate with 'BS AU 48" on it - I've had a look at a few other cars, and in a few books, such a L meridith's "Origonal Porsche", but can't seem to find any relevent info - the plate it is on is riveted on with the same rivets as the factory plate and has the same syle surround

I think the Car was bought new in Hong Kong - possibly it was something to do with that country's registration process..

    Any information gratefully recieved!

    Cheers

    It's a British Standards classification:

BS AU 48 signified that your car met the 1965 standard for seatbelt anchorage points.

Dear Andy - many thanks for that - it's been intreguing me for some years! - so i can assume it was a UK delivered car- It's one of the 1st RHD's and show's some evidence of adapted and blanked panels under the carpet in the luggage compartment, by the footwell. so I was curious about it's history

Any ideas on where I could get Porsche manufactures history info?- presume the American history doc's only cover US imports

    Cheers !

it may have been ordered to UK spec due to embargos on south africa at the time - there seems to have been a number of south african cars going thru the UK first maybe this plate is a tell tail

none of the australian delivered cars have it but all ex UK cars here have it even one that i saw that was delivered in UK but came here straight afterwards

That's interesting. I have never seen one positioned there. Everyone I've seen is above the vin plate on a very curved section of the front slam panel which sounds illogical as it would surely have been easier to pop onto a flat section like yours. Has you car been restored at anytime?

    Mike,

I don't believe so- I bought from an owner that purchased in London in 1984 and imported into US. I've never owned a ROW Porsche until this one.
