    Hella 118 Driving Lights

I have some questions regarding the Hella 118 driving lights. My car is an Australian delivered 69S which has these lights fitted. (The kardex and COA call them "High beam headlights above front bumper"?). After several months of searching I managed to track down a used set on ebay as the originals have quite a bit of rust on the lamp reflectors and one has a cracked lense. My questions are:

    1) Does anyone have any experience or advice on restoration of the lamp units (ie removal of the lense and re silvering of the reflectors etc)?

    2) The original lamps are marked on the back as follows: 9DS 115 248:00 Lampe H3 (M46) in blue ink, but those I got from ebay are marked on the back: 9DS 114 495-00 HR H3 E1 4572 R8 also in blue ink. The lense marking are the same on both however the original lamps have a small "hat" inside which covers the top half of the globe, the ebay lamps do not have this "hat". Both styles use H3 globes. Whats the difference? (I have a feeling the ebay lamps are from a later model car or maybe a 914).

    Regards

    Ok,

I haven't taken these apart, but I have owned a LOT of them. If they are chrome bodied they are 911 or for the aftermarket. All 914's had black bodied lights...though they are essentially the same body as the 911.

I have never had them resilvered, but there is a place in Oregon named Steve's. Check Hemmings.

There are quite a few variants of these lights (fog and driving), halogen h-3, and tungsten bulb (tungsten uses a smaller diameter lense, and slightly larger trim ring, and are always for sale on Ebay by some guy in Germany, and were FOG only, no small diameter driving versions) are the most common, there were also some h-1 versions for some countries like Italy (and perhaps aftermarket, they sold these lights there as well). I am going to have to get back to you on the "hooded" light, as I need to go check storage for the lights to see if any "don't" have the hood, I honestly can't recall if the fog was hooded, and the driving wasn't...or?

    regards,
    Eric

    Thanks Eric,

Further to my original post, both sets of lights are chrome bodied and these bodies or "cases" are identical. Both lamp styles have a clear lense with identical markings on the glass, the only differences being as previously descirbed (ie the markings on the backside of the lamp unit and the "hat" or "hood").

As far as I can tell replacement lamps are NLA, so if you want stay with the original bodies/cases and you crack a lense etc then the only option is to restore used lamps (or buy NOS if you can find/afford them).

    Regards
