    $5 Heuer Barn Find

My brother bought a shoebox full of old watches at a local flea market recently. In the bottom was this early 70's Heuer Temporada!!! He negotiated the seller down to $5 for the entire box (from a $10 asking price) ..... I bought it from him for a small finder's fee. The watch runs great and is in nice shape. The original perforated strap is musty smelling and I'll replace that.

What? No date window? Jeeze, you'd think your brother could have done better for five bucks. Great find!

The Temporada is actually an interesting watch. It has a fiberglass case. It's very lightweight. The movement is the same as most other Heuers. When it was new in the 70's it would have sold for around $90 retail, as opposed to around $175-$200 for the more well-known Autavias, Monacos, Silverstones, etc. that now bring $1500 - $3000.

Great find Curt! I tried searching for an old watch thread but I think it got deleted from the hack awhile back. I remember you had commented on some german time pieces that I thought were nice. Also, can I get your thoughts on O&W? I've got a birthday coming up and would like to pass on a wish list to the wife.

Bob - I've got several links for you. I think the one I had mentioned before was Long Island Watch. They've got a number of low-priced Mechanical watches and excellent service. Most are German and come from Dusseldorf. These are $150-$500, are assembled in Germany, but have "Asian" movements. These movements are actually quite nice but lack the cache (and perhaps the durability and serviceability) of the Swiss stuff. Anything with a Swiss Valjoux movement is going to be closer to $1000+.

This German store has some really unique stuff:

Another option is the Russian stuff. Good quality and here's a good source out on the west coast:

Now if I were you, I'd look for a 70's vintage watch. Of course most of the Heuers are going to be $750+. But there are MANY cool non-Heuer watches out there. Graham has a very nice website to browse through and get an idea and he's very helpful via eMail. Many of these are NOS and only around $200!

    Another vintage site here:

I don't know much about O & W but they look nice and anything with a Valjoux movement is going to be a nice piece.

Here's the piece I just missed out on - a Sorna Bullhead Jackie Ickx version. Some NOS stuff just came on the market and got gobbled up quickly. There're several versions of this watch but none quite as garish and 70's-looking as this yellow 45mm monster!

Oh man my brain is hurting...so many cool watches! Thanks Curt. There was a great watch thread started over on Pelican that was very good in the beginning and the end.
