    Bannana Arm bushing R&R

Ive currently got my spring plates off to replace the bushings and reindex the ride height. I noticed that the banana arm (Trailing arm) bushings have a lot of deflection in them so that I am able to swing the arm from side to side quite easily. How much o a concern is this? How difficult is it to replace these bushings and what replacements are recommended?
    Thanks for any qualified advice.

You have to remove the tranny to get the bolts out. It's a one man job once the engine/tranny is removed. I believe the direction of the bolts was changed in '73 to allow them to be removed with the tranny in place.

Or, if you are lazy like me, you can saw through the bolts.

Do NOT saw through the brakeline.

A certain amount of "deflection" from side to side is appropriate. "Deflection" in the fore/aft direction is not. If you remove the factory rubber bushings and install monoballs, the arm will still move from side to side, but won't move at all in a fore/aft direction. In any event, "while you are in there" there are weather-sealed monoballs that are available that allow you to make more precise alignment of the rear end, and will reduce deflection of the suspension during cornering, reducing camber and toe change. The tradeoff is noise, vibration and harshness, but most who have done the install report that it's acceptable.
