    Does you early car smoke?

Taking a poll - does your flat six smoke? On startup only? A little or a lot? Any photos? I am trying to figure out what's normal. Is it true that they all do a little? My 72 smokes on most startups. Worse if it's been sitting a few days. Does not smoke once it gets going. Best estimate of amount of smoke might be 1/2 the cubic volume of a 1 car garage that dissipates fairly fast.

    Daepp,

    I think it depends

Funny, my tired 2.4S motor didn't smoke at all on start-up...
The (relatively) new 2.7 rebuild of that motor smokes on start-up only after it sits for more then a week... clears up in less then a minute....

Hope this helps... and hope there's more responces

    Cheers,

If the piston rings are all facing more less up, the engine hardly smokes.
Most "engine rebuilding shops" do not know that and are spacing the rings even around the piston.

Oh yeah, no mosquitos at my house. It's a pretty good cloud on start up only, and it does seem to vary, but pretty much like you described.

I have a few theroies, but no smoking gun <<<bad pun.

Mine does not if it has been sitting only for a couple of hours or even overnight - mostly.

there are exceptions - one major one is when the car is parked on a slope, side to side not back to front. then it can smoke on start up after a short rest but it is not consistent. it almost seems to be random on where the engine stops. the amounts are random as well but never a lot

If left for a week or so It usually puffs out a small amount on startup

It does not smoke on hard acceleration - i think There is too much soot and carbon being chucked out the exhaust to tell as it is driven daily in the city and is almost always set slightly rich (what MFI cars aren't especially on the cold circuit which it is on for a lot of the short commutes hence the build up of crap in the exhaust)
On normal running there is not much sign of anything, but flooring the accelerator lets loose a bunch of soot which is easy to see in headlights of the car behind in the dark but I cant see it (mostly) in the day time

My rebuilt 2.4 (with about 7K miles on it) also smokes quite a bit on cold start up.....2 out of 3 times. No rhyme or reason as to when it does and when it doesn't.

I'm relieved to hear that this is not unusual.

Secondly, mine also spews quite a lot of crud out the tail pipe under initial full throttle burst. However, subsequent full throttle bursts during the same outing don't produce any crud.
    Cheers!

Yes Tom My 77 Honda Goldwing dose the same thing as your Bimmers. Will pick the center stand when ever possable. Its just oil finding it's way to the side end of things Now as for the 911 I always try to keep the oil tank level about a quart and 1/2 low from full. This seems to help alot with smoke on cold start ups for some reason. When I get ready for a trip I of course fill it, because at a quart about every 1500 miles means a good hard days driving. But I have noticed that when full it dose tend to smoke a good bit more on start up. As for the Goo that comes out of the tail pipe on start up is only a mixture of condension and exhaust byproudcuts. I have never noticed a muffler collect as much condenssion as the 911's seem to. Glad mine is stainless.
