    Switch 4-speed tranny for a 5-speed

have bought a 1971 5-speed tranny that I will install instead of my 1971 4-speed tranny installed in the car today(1971 911T 2,2)

I am not sure about the condition of the tranny and I have no former experience opening a tranny and evaluate its condition.

Instead of installing it straight into the car, I want to have it checked out. Can I do a rough inspection my selves? any good ideas or tips what to do and what to look for?

The 4-speed is good, what should I sell it for?

    Thanks
    John

I'd be inclined to switch the guts to keep the original case in the car.

Honestly, unless you are ready to pull the entire trans apart to inspect the bearings, gears, synchros, and the case itself, just install it into the car. Once you test drive it, any problems will surface, i.e. worn synchros, gears, etc., and then you'll have to take it out again. But this way you'll have something to zero in on that definitely will be needing attention. Unless you are really good at trans rebuilding with all the special tools needed, you still may miss something that a test drive will undoubtedly tell you about. Even the professionals miss it sometimes. As for the current 4 spd box, park it in a corner of your garage wraped it in plastic. So if these cars get into the Barrett Jackson level of interest, you can always retro fit it back in, or just give it to the new owner.

Thanks to everybody and especially to Grady Clay. I have read a lot of your posts and it seems that you are always willing to help people with MFI, tranny problems etc.
