    door window frame installation

    Guys,
When I install the door window frame in my 69 after a bare metal respray, does the door latch that hooks the rear of the door to the quarter post go in first or does the window frame go in first.

Right now I have the door latch installed and it seems to be a bit of a challenge to slide the window frame past it.

I'll be re-installing the instruments while I wait to hear.

    Thanks

    John

I'm think the latch should go in first

If you are talking about the door latch, you have to angle it a bit to get it throught the hole. If the window frame is in place you may not have the space or angle to get the latch through the hole. I think it might also be a good idea to install the door stops before the window frame goes in. I can't remeber if the window frame makes it difficult to reach the hole for the door stop?

The door stop is installed. I am having touble working the window frame past the door latch assembly while holding the glass in the frame. Because it has been a year since I took the door apart, I can't remember which piece I took out first.

Maybe I'll go back and try it again with the door latch in place using a friend's extra hands. Then I'll consider taking the door latch out if it doesn't go.

As I remember, try placing the window in the door cavity first, then marry the two as you install the window frame. I have early window regulators. The later regulators may have window install issues I'm not familiar with.

    door window frame

The latch must go in first, the window goes in next, and should be slid onto the regulator arms, then with the window part way down you guide the window frame over the front and back edge of the glass, moving the glass slightly fore and aft as necessary to enable the frame to slide down without running into the latch. Lightly tighten all the attachment bolts and shut the door to check for fit against the door seal. If you drop the front attachment bolts they do not drop to the inside area of the door, they have to fished out through a 1" hole at the very front bottom of door.

    Ed,
Great to hear from you and thanks for the insight. I'm the guy in Cincinnati with the sporto 73 S that now owes you another glass of sarsparilla.
I've taken time out from the project to take my wife to dinner tonight but will get back on it tomorrow using your instructions.
Am I correct that the inner and out felt strips on the top of the door go in after the window and frame? It seemed a little difficult to get the trailing edge of the frame with the riveted on block to go between the trailing edge of the door and the pop in felt so I took the felt strip out with the intention of installing after the frame is in place.
And thanks for the warning on installing the leading edge mounting screws. Why doesn't someone invent a magnetized Allen bolt screw driver type tool to make this easier?

Not to worry John, I know who you are and where you live (you had the thermostat question) Yes, you can put the felt strips on afterwards, the outer one goes on first, that way you can lean the window inwards to give you a little more room to snap in the outer strip, then push on the inner felt strip last. As for the front allen head bolts I use a 4" long allen socket (gives more clearance around the hole) and you can use a little dum-dum shoved into the bolt head to make it stick to the socket.
