912 karmann as 911R replica base

    Hi all,
Some time ago, i read that the factory itself made some 911R with a 912 Karmann body specialy because this is the smallest weight.
Is that true ? If yes, considering that i'm not a 912 specialist, is it a big modification to put the Flat6 in place of the Flat4 ?
    Rgds.

Freddy, I can't answer your 911R/912 Karmann weight question but there are plenty of knowledgeable members here who can. I can answer your flat 4 to flat 6. It's not complicated, the motor mount change is biggest item it requires the old 4 cyl. mounts be removed and 6 mounts welded in. Mounts can be obtained from an old donor 6 car. To me it sounds like a perfect 911R clone canidate. Mark

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.

Owning 2 912's - I cannot imagine HOW a 912 tub could be lighter then a 911 because as far as I know - the ONLY difference is the engine mounts (discounting that early 912's had 3-gauge dash). I read somewhere that the 69 tub was the lightest of all. Maybe it could come from the weight difference between a 911 and a 912 is more then the net difference in the engine alone - due to no oil tank, rubber mats, and on 69 cars - only one battery.

Do a search on Karmann, I think they were thought to have built the lightest chassis.

I think thqt the 4 prototype Rs were built in early 1967 and I am not sure about the bodies but the "production" cars were made in "September " 1967, and were of the 68 model year.

I think that Chassis Numbers ran from 11899001 to 020 inclusive.
