Pics: of 2.2S trombone oil coolers please

    Hi,

Does anyone have any pictures of a 2.2S trombone front mounted oil cooler? It would be useful to have them for reference and to see what fixtures were used and the fit of the parts. I am restoring 2 x RHD 2.2S so they would be very useful. Here is a pic of one of the cars.

    Thanks in advance

    Alan

OliveR is right.... Trombone coolers started with the '73 2.4 ... and 2.7 RS's

    Hope this helps,

    Hi,

I have heard that several times and also read it in a few book, BUT, I have seen several 2.2Ss with the trombone oil coolers, 2 of which were very original cars. I am 99% certain 2.2Ss did come with trombone oil coolers. Maybe it was a RHD thing as 3 of the cars I am referring to were RHD. Also don't rely on the PET for referring to 2.2S oil parts as it is not 100% correct.

Anyone else have a 2.2S with trombone cooler? (and pics )

    Thanks

    Alan

I have never seen a car prior to a 2.4 with a trombone cooler and that was a1973 model. Even those were only "fair" once the engines hit 3 liters (litres). The the "brass tube" cooler came out as a retrofit. I recall buying one from Stoddard 23 years ago. Very sturdy piece and it did a great job. IF you can find one they work well and are sturdy enough (by design) to be run without any rock shield, etc.

In 1984 when the Carrera was introduced and entirely new setup came out.

All the oil coolers before '73 were the small 'radiator type'.

I've been told they were the same 'small fitting' cooler till '71... then changed to the 'large fitting' cooler in '72. (the same fittings as on the trombone and later coolers)

The cooler I retrofitted to my '73 is from a '72... the fittings accept the larger fitted stub oil lines that go to the hard lines... I also fitted 'later type' hard lines with the thermostat just in back of the rear wheel.

    Hope this helps,

    Alan,
This cooler was one of the features of the '69 to '72 MY 911 S models that makes my car interesting engineering-wise to me.
Too many features on 911s became gradually 'cheaper' after the '71 MY IMHO.
It is my understanding that some radiators were damaged and were replaced by the trombone type at a later stage for whatever reason.
I have never heard of an original trombone cooler on a 2.2 S .
    Skeleton pic attatched .
My car was a UK delivery and has this radiator still.
    HTH.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    Hi,

Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated. I also seem to recall that the fixing size changed in 72. The trombone cooler set up I have here has the smaller size fittings and thus is designed specifically for the earlier models.

I guess then that Porsche made these items (as Dennis says) as a replacement. Here are some more pics of 2.2S with trombone coolers
