Thread: For board consideration

    For board consideration

Decided to participate on the 356 Registry discussion board and attempted to join using my Early 911S Registry handle (72targa). Here is the reply I got:

    Hello 72targa,

Thank you for joining the new 356Talk Forum. The 356 Registry
Trustees have established a policy that all 356Talk members use their
first and last name, with a space in the middle, as their username.
This is clearly stated on the 356Talk registration web page.

Please provide me with your full name so I can make that change for you.

The 356 Registry requests that members use their real name as their
Forum username to promote a friendly atmosphere on the Forum,
encourage civil behavior and discourage "flaming" or angry posts.
It's easier to get upset with someone if you don't know their name.
It's like the difference between emailing a stranger and standing in
front of them speaking face to face. In person we are more likely to
be polite: via email the usual social conventions are weaker.
You can read more about Forum privacy issues at
    http://356registry.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4296

    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Barry Brisco
    356Talk Forum Administrator

I have submitted my name. We may wish to consider this tactic as well. Thoughts? Comments?

    Thumbs up

    Peter,

A subtle request to use ones first and last name was one of my very first posts as moderator of this board....it did not get very far. I would LOVE to try again.......

    Cheers,

I think it is a very good practice. This will as the 356 registry answer says: "promote a friendly atmosphere on the Forum,
encourage civil behavior and discourage "flaming" or angry posts
    "

I say we go for it

I wish that when I had signed up for this BBS I had made my username my actual name as well.

Even if this change isn't adopted board wide would it be possible to change the user name w/o having to start a new account?

This requirement is at the top of the list for another major Porsche internet board when they transition to an updated format; for all the same reasons plus a few more.

It's funny, but when I meet local guys at Summit Point for DE, I introduce myself and then say "I'm Call911" and they go "Oh, okay..." Everybody does the same. It actually screws us up if you change your "handle".

The 356 Registry discussed some privacy issues, but it seems to be working out with your full name. But then getting the membership off the old "Talk List' email format and on a modern forum with pictures was harder than a 4-cam rebuild

Both names listed and keeping your account would be a nice option.

A great man that I knew died yesterday morning having achieved 87 years of age. A nice run.

As time marched on his grandchildren cringed when he launched into a diatribe because they were groomed "PC". God bless him that he never bought into that camp. He always spoke his mind and you knew where he stood. It is an admirable trait in these waters we sail today.

Now; If you do this thing will the membership be closed or will we have lurkers picking up on the rarified tidbits of information that can be garnered from a full name? You would be surprised (not).
There are privacy issues on an open forum. The 356 forum is PRIVATE. Members only. You have to be a member and have a membership number.

I'm happy to sign off on anything I write. The trustees here need to consider the membership question and the amount of data that they are willing to "float" on a public forum.

BTW; when I went to the Parade everybody wanted to meet Tom. My name is Tom. It's what I answer to.

    My name is: Tom

    change to user name

I guess its obvious that I don't have a problem with using our given name. That other gruppe that I belong to also requires this. I hadn't thought about the issues that Tom just brought up (sorry I missed meeting you at Parade,Tom) but if member ship becomes the requirement I don't see a problem with that anyway. I had posted a rant on the membership forum about this a month ago. I'm mostly in favor of asking the people who use this to pay up, no free rides, or at least a very short one. RE: esoterik, I can see what we have gotten used to over time, is it possible to use both, ie. always require a "proper" name along with your "handle".

I don't own a 356 but I'm a member of the 356Talk Forum. Maybe they changed the rules regarding ownership/membership with the registry when they switched over from the listserv?

You still don't have to be a member of the 356 registry to be a forum member. It's an open forum that only requires registration w/ your name.
