authentic color for front and rear trunk areas?

as some of you know, i'm restoring a '68 swt targa. (if it matters, #11880001.) i've been grinding stuff off of it for months and we're starting to turn the corner.

i've looked at all sorts of early 911 photos from this website and elsewhere (as well as looking at meets and shows) and it seems like i've seen two color options for the front trunk area: body color and black. which one is correct for the inner fenders and sheet metal?

(i realize that most of it is covered by carpet.)

the same question applies to the rear trunk/engine bay: black or body color?

thanks to the group for contributing its collective wisdom, as always.

    Black

For '68 the boot and engine compartment are black. I don't believe that Porsche changed to painting these areas with body color until the early 70's.

Sacto is correct. Wurth SKS Stoneguard black all exterior including front trunk or "boot" as Sacto refers to it and engine compartment.

    so, it's black stonegard...

...for the inner fenders, front trunk and engine compartment? (please verify to make sure i did not misunderstand.)

i am also told that the original factory process did not involve primer, but can i assume that it's okay to rust-protect the bare steel before the stonegard?

    thank you, again.

also, does the black stonegard include the fuel tank?

some of the research material suggests that the fuel tank is coated in gray schutz.

    thanks.

Yes all of the above black including inner front fenders themselves. I can't comment on primer on a 68 but can on under coat because I have a 68 parts car, it's the Wurth black like my 67. My 67 did not have primer under the old Wurth but I primed prior to shooting with an etching primer. Also can't comment on 68 tank color/material no tank in the parts car. Be advised you will need a gun per pic to do it correctly. With 2 minutes practice adjusting air pressure and shooting distance you will be able to match texture perfectly.

I can confirm that my 68 had gray schutz on the gas tank and it was very original. Also, note that the front and rear trunk and engine lid hinges are black. Supposedly the Wurth brand of Black paint is a good match.

What was the painting order at Porsche in the sixties (on a 1968 street car). Was it: from sheet metal, primer, body color, black (inner fender, trunk, engine compartiment, floor) up to the stonegard?
On my car where the stonegard is pealing of one seems to see so blue-ish color (it is situated on the layer between the sheet metal and the stonegard). Could it be some kind of rust repellant? Or is it rather a color reaction of the stonegard layer (primer or black paint) on the sheet metal? I will try to take some pictures and post them later.
    Thanks for all possible insights.

JD-- the painting order was like this for the SWB cars:

Schutz on the underside over thin gray or white primer (the "body in white"). (Today we would use anticorrosion epoxy primer first THEN schutz)
Schutz in the trunk and engine compartment with certain areas masked off with wide masking tape
Schutz in the interior- rear seat area, wheel arches, up under the dash
Body color on the car. Plenty of overspray onto the schutz in the rear seat area, this is how we know the order
Satin black over the top of the schutz. We know this for certain because the areas that were masked to not receive any schutz still have black paint on them. The area where the springplate covers mount- the area in the trunk where the horn relay and bumper brackets mount- these are all satin black.
Satin black on dashboard face, around defrost vents, around handbrake, etc., as detailed in other threads here.

Doing the schutz work and seam sealer takes about 30 hours, no kidding.

For SWB you hold the schutz gun back 12" from the surface, for LWB you hold it 2" from the surface.

    Good luck!
