    Jeff Zwart on Pike's Peak

Famous Porsche photographer and film maker Jeff Zwart placed sixth overall and first in the Time Attack class at the Pike's Peak hillclimb this past weekend in a GT3 RS updated to 2010 specs with the current Cup motor and sequential gears. His time was ahead of many unlimited cars. Of course, Zwart has been taking advantage of 911 traction on that mountain for many years...

This video link is of his record qualifying run:

So much pavement these days! Apparently he used a Pirelli rain tire as a compromise tarmac/gravel tire. That's got to be a difficult tire to drive on gravel!

    edit: awesome pic on Speedhunters.

"Yes indeed, a new Class Championship and record in the Time Attack Division, breaking the old record by 38 seconds. Also finished 6th overall, just behind the three unlimited cars and two open wheelers. Thanks to Dennis Boada and all the crew from Porsche Motorsport North America and Pirelli tires."

    Eclological Asphalt!

Paving the entire road is the compromise to keep it open. Apparently the ecologists were concerned that too much gravel was spilling off the road surface and mixing with the apparently rare and nearly extinct Pikes Peak natural gravel. Really!

    Save the Humans

Sadly, "saving" the Alpine dead-zone from gravel by paving the entire Pikes Peak Highway is going to make the hillclimb much more dangerous for human beings. Drivers will be able to make the run on slicks. If they leave the road they will be doing so at much higher speeds. This in turn means that the organizers had better do better crowd-control in zones likely to see "offs" and take steps to slow or eliminate the "unlimited" classes. This will change the character of the event forever, if not lead to the ultimate demise of the second oldest automobile race in America.
