    Rallye International du Maroc

While we have been following the Peking-Paris rally, there has been another event down Morocco way featuring numerous classic Porsche 911's being properly abused in the desert for a week. Belgian Gregoire de Mevius won the overall classification in a 911, with the championship-winning former Audi Sport Quattro driving team of Michele Mouton and Fabrizia Pons finishing second also in a 911. Bjorn Waldegaard drove a Peugeot 504 Coupe which suffered from the course and was not a top classification.

The event was held over 2800 km and 7 days for pre-1976 cars. You can check out some excellent video clips on the home page -- most of the interviews are in English:

Raj - here's a pic I took of an ex-Safari Peugeot run by Jon Woodner at the POR in '82 (3rd foto). And others of the same car at the Detroit-Cadillac Rally in '83. Cool cars for sure.

    Curt,

Thanks for posting your terrific pictures of the 504 Rally Coupe. I think that the Pininfarina design was cool and Peugeot turned it into a pretty rugged rally car. I can remember when Jon Woodner was driving MG's and Jensen-Healey's for Joe Huffaker back in the early '70's. He was another of those "too fast to live, too young to die" characters when he was killed sport flying.

Those off-camber gravel turns will scare the bejesus out of you

She was running a Tuthill car and had a brake failure on the first day. She set fastest time on several stages. Probably would have won the event without that incident.

Luke, unless you have a big backyard, or you prep a car to run in Rally America, unfortunately it's not likely that there is anywhere in the US that you could do this. The lawyers would be sitting on the sidelines rubbing their hands together in anticipation.

Great video of Michele in the 911!
