    Porsche Hell

Came across an un-restored 356A coupe a few days back.

    I never appreciated Porsches when I was a kid. Always thought they were funny-looking, dumpy --- especially the 356s . . . weird '30s-era styling, narrow tires tucked-up inside the body-work, tiny/weak/air-cooled motors . . . . eew.

After college, being forced into VWs by cost-per-mile . . . I came to appreciate the economy, durability and utility of German-engineered cars. Like VW. But then noticed the build quality. Like in the 356.

Like this . . . Porsche's standard factory 2-3 millimeter panel gap. On a repainted/now-faded-but-otherwise-unrestored regular '59 coupe. Not a Carrera, not even a Super. A Basic Car.

I can remember every vehicle that I've personally seen this particular feature on . . . an un-restored Bali blue C-coupe once owned by Craig Stevenson, in Huntington Beach . . . Mike Keady's repainted Meissen/red Speedie, up in Watsonville . . . another unrestored Red/black Speedie I saw at the Porsche 50th Anniversary dealio, Monterey '98 ---- 87901, the un-restored-beater Roadster that took me two years to find . . . . and now this . . .
