    The comeback of Blu

I have started my tear down of my 71T which I affectionately call Blu. I am running a thread over on the Pelican board, but I will periodically update here as well.

Here are a few pics. I will need to practice my welding again. I have also recently found out how well a twisted wire cup brush works! Wow! It makes undercoat and paint removal much easier. Question, are all weld thru primers the same or ? Thanks.John

    Thanks John.

The plan is to put a 3.2 that is currently in a running driving donor with a 901,993 HE's, Recaro SE seats, RS carpet, some discrete stiffening, Carrera brakes in front, Turbo TB's,poly bronze bushings, alum front cross bar, bilstein shocks (Sport fronts, HR rear), adjustable sways, no flares, 15x6&7 fuchs.

It's a big project for me.

I made a little more progress this weekend after a long week on the road.

Removed majority of the undercoating on the inner fender well

filled the garage with smoke and dust setting off the smoke detector.

I used a multifunction tool to scrape off the majority of it and then used a radial twisted wire brush. There as considerably less dust. I will be doing this method with the other side.

I then treated it with metal ready to prevent any flash rusting.

Here is the chassis number. I always kinda find this stuff neat.

As always, wear your ppe's (heavy leather gloves included).

John- Great project! The twisted wire ends are great. Presume you are using one on the end of a side grinder? Seems to go much faster. I have also set off a smoke detector getting rid of old undercoating.

Keep us posted. Like the vision of how its going to be!

A little update after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I didn't get much done last week. Had lost my dog of nearly 15 years (Catahoula) which slowed me down and went out of town for a several days to visit with family. I started back at it last night. Here is where I am at so far.

I have most of the front inner fender areas nearly de-undercoated. I have treated it with metal ready before a final clean up.

It looks like I am going to have to replace the cowl. I think I can salvage this from my targa donor.

I got tired of grinding and brushing and opted to get some bracing ready for the door areas. I don't know that I need to do this, but it isn't going to hurt anything. Yes, I need welding practice don't most of us?...
A friend recommended using the door hinges from one of the donors and bolting to the shoulder seat belt mounting area to triangulate. Thanks JPNovak, good idea.
I mocked it up on my 70 donor.
