    Torque Thrusts on SWB

    Question for the wheel police...

I have a SWB and am looking at putting Torque Thrusts on it. What is the widest rim you can put on with the car lowered? Im guessing the back space would have a lot to do with it. Also, can you drill out chev spacing and make these work or do they have to be 5 x 130?

I really like the look of the Trans-am car pictured but a lot of those look like it has had the front and rear arches modified and i would like to avoid that if possible.

Hi Andy, those are 'R' flares in the rear and if you're car had them from new you'd be a lucky, lucky fellow.

Here's one of the threads that discuss these wheels in great detail:

The widest is 6" in (Porsche) Americans, the 7' (Porsche) Americans will not fit a stock fender.
The Chevy Americans (and any other fitment other than the Porsche mold specific wheels) have the wrong back space to fit a Porsche.

Yes, they look like 7s. (That car has some fender work.) The photo is a little small. Here is a 7, version 1?-6" and a version 3-6" with a thin coat of paint for vintage racing inspection..... I have also seen some 5.5"s and there may even be some 5". I would have to go through my files to be sure.

You can mill the mating face to make the wheel sit inboard more. I asked someone who raced an SWB on 7" aluminum Torque thrusts how he made them fit the rear and that was what he had done.

    Thanks for the confirmation Bill.
    Saved me some digging.
    I couldn't come up with a 5" photo easily.
I found the 5" reference in my 356 files.
    But still no photos...

I have taken .250 off of aluminum 7X15 hubs to fit a stock LWB and there was enough left...
Never removed any from a Mag 7X15 though....At 5X+ the price I would advise against milling a Mag 7X15....even if there was enough material.
All of the 7X15 mag wheels that I have refinished have been all on race cars with modded fenders anyway.
Photos of some alu 7X15s....John Gray and Bob Tilton.

FYI, Bob Tilton's '68 SWB has LWB flares which contributes to how he was able to fit 7"s. Based on a few telltales for those of us who know Bob's car, that looks like an old picture.
