    SWB vinyl vs LWB vinyl

Cleaning some spare parts lately I noticed the vinyl is quite different between the SWB and LWB parts. I believe the panel to the left came out of a 66 or a 67, the right is from a 2,2.

You can actually feel there is more structure on the SWB vinyl, the 2.2 vinyl just feels "smooth"

Is this a coincidence (different batches of vinyl during production) or would it be correct to say we have two types of vinyl in our cars? (or more??)

When did this change take place, introduction of LWB or earlier??

    Thanks, Radmund

    hi radmund
what i have seen is that vinyl changed several times the first change happened somewhen end of my67 beginning my68 (mid 67)
the early one is thinner and has white backside structure the later is thicker , feels softer and has bluish/black backside...if i remember right.

for my 68 porsche introduced some crash safety features to the 911---break away mirror, soft dash,etc...also the door handle got a bit more cushioned....so maybe the new vinyl was also part of this programm (to add an extra 0,5mm chrashzone ) or just for more convenience

Thanks Franz, very interesting! I especially like your crash-zone theory

It would be cool to document these changes and also compare with vinyl available from different suppliers today. I guess many of them have the same source.

Attaching a pic I got from Tony Garcia showing his vinyl. Extremely nice, but so far it seems no one can supply vinyl that matches my old SWB panels 100%.

Glad you liked the pictures mshaver :-)

New Black Vinyl at Autos Intl

Autos International recently received a new batch of black vinyl that comes closer to the original SWB in color and texture. Ask Carolina at Autos for the "new black vinyl."

Very interesting John! That vinyl looks so good that it´s tempting to stop looking for old pieces.
