    Turn Signal repair help needed

    Hi everyone!

I own a 1970 911S and the turn signal has stopped working. Here is the history and deatails:

    1. For the entire 15 years I have owned the car, if I set the turn signal lever for a left or right turn, the turn signals on the front and back of the car would blink. However, the turn signal indicator in the tachometer would either blink dimly and then fade to nothing or not even blink at all. Note that even if the turn signal light in the tachometer was blinking dimly or not at all, I always heard a clicking sound when the car was stopped at a light. In this situation the turn signal lever was set for a left or right turn and the lights on the front and back of the car would blink the whole time.
    2. As of this week, the turn signals on the front or back of the car do not blink anymore and I no longer hear that clicking sound that is audible when I am at a stop light when the turn signal lever is in the left or right turn position.

Is it simply a turn signal relay that I need to order?

I am most interested in getting the lights to flash so that other motorists know my turn intentions.

However, I am curious if anyone has experienced (or know the fix!) for the dimly lit or unlit turn signal light in the tachometer?

    thanks in advance,
    Jason

I've suffered the same problem and most of the time it's solved by grounding the turn signal housings. Clean the connectors and the nuts securing the ground wires first.

Have you tried the emergency flashers to see if they work on all 4 corners. Most likely the turn signal relay needs replacing, and make sure you buy the more expensive Porsche relay...$64 or so, as the after market units are not good...I tried one. But having good grounds all around are very important.

Check for good contact of fuses, easy way is just to spin them in the holders, if that solves your problem take each fuse out one at a time and clean the contacts with a scotchbright pad then clean the corresponding spot on the fuse holder. To present this from happening again you can coat the fuse contacts with Fluidfilm or something similar, this will stop the oxidizing.

Hi everyone! Thanks for your prompt responses to my turn signal problem. I tried your suggestions this weekend and got the turn signals working again! A bad/dirty contact in Fuse 8 was why the turn signals stopped working. I cleaned the fuse contacts and bent the prongs holding the fuse and the turn signal relay started working again. The interesting thing was the dimly flashing turn signal indicator in the tach. I've had this problem for the entire time I've owned the car. Turns out there was an incorrect bulb in the right front turn signal. It would flash, but there was a 2-element bulb in the socket. I put a one-element bulb in its place and now the right turn signal flashes brightly and the turn signal indicator in the tach stays brightly lit the whole time the turn signal is on.
    Thanks again for your help!!!

Many thanks to jsavage and the Registry! Had similar symptoms today after leaving the Phoenix Club. First application of the turn signal resulted in one normal cycle, then both lights flashed and stopped. Thereafter no turn signals while ignition was on. They would work with ignition off -- weird. Stopped and checked fuses -- all good. Went to a local FLAPS, but no luck finding a new relay. Fired up the Registry, searched and found this thread. Cleaned the contacts on the number 8 fuse as suggested and voila -- normal signals. Go figure.
