    Fitting Rear Bumper (69 E)

    HI Guys

Trying to fit my rear bumper but running into an issue. I purchased the car disassembled so I don't know for certain whether these were the original bumpers that went with the car or not.

The issue I have is that i need to move the bumper inboard by at least 1/4" in order to be in line with the tail light. There is no way the bumper guard will go on at this point.

However, underneath the mounting flange is hard into a lip along the rear frame.

Before I cut, bend or otherwise modify, I was hoping I could rely on some experience here to make suggestions.

    Thanks
    Darren

I just did the same project and that whole bumper assembly is fairly Arcane.
I ended up just pushing and bending until things fit together and looked right. It was fairly time-consuming.

Darren, the left side, I'm pretty sure, came on the car. The right side was where the car was tapped, and it's possible that bumper is from another car. But regardless of accident history, most of these oldies need some prying and twisting. And even when the bumper is generally in the right spot, you may need to shim the mount to get the bumper top even with the bottom of the quarter. I've even had to put wedge shims in to twist it. The way the license panel fits on is a bit crude. It sometimes pays to do the whole assembly including the bumperettes before final tightening of the mounting bolts.

Looking good. Can't wait to see the completed car!

Thanks guys. It looks like I'm going to have to do some bending. With everything loosened up there is no way I can push it over into position due to that lip underneath. I'm just dreading working like this with the finished panels. The rear quaryter has an eyelet for a vertical bolt right behind the wheel arch whereas the bumper does not have a corresponding attachment point. Both the quarter and the bumper have it on the RH side. Makes me think this might not have been the original bumper.

Darren, I think your going to have to work this bumper. You really need the bracket that meets behind the wheel arch, otherwise when you fit the supporting bracket, it will push the bumper out.

I fitted a replacment bumper during my resto (rust under the trim) and ended up unstitching the main mounting bracket, as I couldn't get it to line up. From memory there are three spot welds.

It doesn't really help that you have the finished paint on the bumper, but as I said you do really need that vertical bracket, to make it all work.

Not sure but are you certain those bumpers are for a LWB and not a SWB. I'm sure the two are different and not interchangeable. Hope I'm wrong for your sake.
