    Tool Kit Wrench Provenance?

    Friends,

A recent 'for sale' ad generated some rather abrupt responses about provenance, so I wanted to move the discussion away from the posted ad and into the 'technical' discussion. I'm kind of surprised at the tone of the discussion, but the issue of provenance is important. I do not personally claim to be any sort of authority on tool kits, and frankly, for that, I would normally consult with Soterik, but here is the sum of the notes that I have gathered on correct tool kit wrenches over the past 2-3 years:

To my knowledge it goes like this:
    • Drop forged Steel large font 65-69
    • Drop forged Steel small font 70-73.5
    • Selected steel 73.5-74
    • DIN 895 wrenches 74-75
    • Selected Special Steel 76+

Does this fit into the common knowledge?

    Thank you.

I have a 73, build date May. Open wrenches are Selected Special Steel. Others in this thread indicate that they have the same.

I have never seen open wrench set in an original early 911 tool kit for '65 to '77 that had a stamp of "Selected Steel". "Drop Forged Steel" or "Selected Special Steel" were in these kits. Just curious where did you gather your info for "Selected Steel" and "DIN 895" wrenches? I have seen several original '73 and '74 kits and all the wrenches are stamped "Special Selected Steel".

Maybe we should create a resource like this for tools (and other items)?

    a Like +++

Instead of complaining and inquiring, people should be educated, in these and all areas in life, is my believe, that is a great Idea, I like to learn, and what is most anoing is when you can´t get enough information on something, or some matter, I think is a great idea for all items, tools, light´s, steering wheels, hubs, mirrors, bucket seats, engine parts, etç etç

    all the best

Stephen Acworth has nailed it. We need the same sort of info that the 356 registry (and now the 914 guys) has developed. An actual discussion is useful and educational and too often we never get the real information because we start arguing.

The info I posted was from previous posts and ads on several forums. If you have other information let's get it together and figure it out. My intent was only to open the discussion. My hope is that we can figure out where we agree and then fine tune the other stuff.

It would be great if the early 911 tool cognoscenti could create a resource like the one at this link for 914 and 914/6 cars.

This would be great. What are the chances of expanding it beyond tools? A bit lofty, but would be great to have it for trim details, or paint particulars, etc...including pics from exemplars.

I know Raj recently pulled some of his posts, and the loss of some of this information is a loss indeed.

Maybe it is something for Chuck and the others to think about. A separate section of the board like a wiki that has moderated (but in a technical expert way maybe with a group of experts in each specialist area) posts on a range of technical resources that can be updated as new / corrected information comes along. This could possibly be a "paid members only" if that is technically possible and provide another great reason to become a paid member. I don't really consider myself an expert in a lot of these technical areas although i have a lot of collected "stuff" over the years that may or may not be accurate. For such a genuine, hopefully enduring, database where the facts and "truth" such as there is when a lot of things were not standardized, I for one would be happy to contribute all I have in my databases for such a project. As an aside I wonder what will happen to such information that is in the oldtimers heads or even in databases such as mine or Davep's over time if they are not kept in a systematic way.
