Seeking Advice on Value
I have a '68 911L Soft Window Targa that I am thinking about restoring. It would be restored to a high original standard. The original color was Tangerine and that is the color it would be painted. It would have original and correct 1968 sports seats (redone) and the uber-rare 911S bumper and deco trim. Matching numbers, fresh engine, fresh transmission. Correct 5.5" wheels redone by Harvey.
I would really appreciate thoughts from the list on what this car would be worth. I'm usually not too influenced by that, but there's a chance that I would end up selling the car at the end of the restoration (long story) and I'm not going to move forward if it would result in a loss. Fortunately, my restoration costs here in Central Oregon, for very high quality work, are *far* less than in most areas.
Fire away - and thanks.

John, restorations are typically worth the cost of the restoration minus the cost of the car, if its a desirable car. A USA spec. 68L is basiclly a S with a standard motor, because the s would not pass emissions that year. Its kinda cool because it has a lot of one year only stuff, but that also makes it harder to restore. The soft rear window is very nice, as is the color.
So, as a restored car, I would call it desirable, but its not a nearly as desirable as a "S".
Reality check.........
Unless its a "keeper" I think restoring a car makes poor financial sense, at best you will break even, at worst you will lose your shirt.

Just as a guess, for this car, in fully restored condition (based on what I saw you with at a concours earlier) and in this market, I would say $45K-$55K. My .02
