The easy answer is that there were no RS in 1972; they were from 1973 on up.
In 1972 the hot car was the ST variant.
Depending on what you mean by "there were no Rs's in '72" that may or may not be entirely true.
According to the Konradsheim Carrera RS book, the first RS is Ser.#9113600011, manufactured in April of '72. Under the category of where it was initially shipped, the listing shows "Code 100", which the Appendix explains as "retained by Factory". In fact, the first ten cars, (i.e. the 10 Prototypes used for testing / marketing), were all for internal factory use.
Regular production units began shipping in Oct. of '72, yes, presumably as '73 MODEL YEAR cars everywhere, but a total of 312 units were actually manufactured in '72.
If the original poster were to post the VIN number of the msytery car in question it would be easy to tell what the story behind it is.
