northeast coast dealer/registry information

I have a new-to-me 1968 Karmann Sunroof Coupe that was originally in the Northeast coast, possible New York or New Jersey. I have a COA for the car (it is a numbers-matching, rust-free car) but I would like to see if I can gather additional information on it from previous owners or from the dealership. Does anybody know if there is a way to track additional information from the dealer or previous owner using serial number/registration documents from the car?
