Jose, I think the engine originally configured but we need to re-check the engine number AND the list member"davep" so-called build number as below (courtesy Dave)

Engine numbers.
Jose,
Heavily modified indeed! The instruments are after 1967. I'll bet on double checking you will find an older engine number than documented. Like you say who would put on Solex, plus the cams drive the fuel pumps, etc.
The engine number does LOOK as you say but a little hard to see, and the same, especially for the other engine data. If you have higher resolution picture(s). Pleae email them to me and I will upload to higher resolution link and post. Thanks.

PS You have a good file of photos on your computer I see..must be a loved one.

As you can see Allen, the engine build number is 5703.

Jose,
I see. Looks like you are right. REALLY WEIRD. It is close to my bedtime. I'm going to have Porsche detail nightmares!

Sorry Allen but I haven't better pictures in my computer.
And yes, you are right, I love this car and I really like to restore it but I must wait a couple of years.
Meanwhile I'm enjoying this fantastic forum and the knowledge and experience of people like you.
Jose.
Looking at the photos, it looks like it doesn't have center lube solex cams.
Very strange.

I only can recall 2 possibilities:
1.- Porsche factory used an old 901/1 in stock and numbered it as 901/5 or
2.- After a big break out, somebody changed the engine and stamped it that way not to loose the "matching numbers".
I really appreciate any help.
Jose
A couple points.
1) Those are 1964-1966 door strikers and screws, in 1967 the striker changed.
2) On the engine, you can pull a rocker shaft and measure the length. In the 1967 model year the shafts got longer with a larger diameter pinch bolt.
3) You can pull off the spring plate and measure the ID of the bushing receiver- this changed in 1967.
Best case the car is put together from old parts at the Factory-- cars that had a QC issue that was later corrected and then rolled down the line.
