That is really cool Brian! I bought a brand new Paramount in 1975. A P-10 as I recall, the short-wheelbase version. Silver with chrome Nervex lugs. It sold for $675 ( a LOT of money for a bike back then) and I paid as much I could each week over the winter at the local bike shop. All Campy equipped, leather Brooks saddle, Cinelli bars and all!
That summer I went on a 3 week tent-camping road trip using it as a touring bike, complete with the sew-up racing tires! I think I had 10-15 punctures on that trip and became quite proficient at un-sewing and sewing the sew-ups :D

While I was going to school in Chicago, I worked part-time at Wastyn Cycles on the near Northside. Oscar Wastyn, the owner and a legend of american cycling, a truly gifted and decent man, was the original designer of the Paramount and continued to collaborate with Schwinn until his death on the latest frame-building techniques and tweaks. I learned a great deal from him. I bought bright yellow 60 cm Paramount from him, built it up with full Campagnolo giblets, Nisi rims and Clement tubulars. It had toeclips and I wore wooden soled shoes with cleats. Wore wool jerseys year-round. Rode that set-up for many years during school and after I graduated and moved to the western suburbs. Great road bike.....nice low bottom bracket, 72 1/2 degree headtube, none of that radical criterium steep-angle short-wheelbase nonsense that's all the current rage. It was as stable as a Mercedes sedan and very forgiving. OK, so it weighed a little more than todays miracle bikes but a double century on the Paramount ( with a well broken in Brooks saddle no less ) left you a lot fresher than any of today's hi-tech marvels.
Oscar also built a lugged, Reynolds 56 cm chrome-plated track frame for my son John, ( on my request he put Paramount decals on it) with which John set a national 3000 meter Junior pursuit record that stood for many years ( 3'-44'' ).
If I weren't so overweight and old and riddled with gouty arthritis I'd still be riding my Paramount. It's in Europe now with a cousin's son who rides it frequently. That's one of the many attributes of steel frames....they last forever. Aluminum and carbonfibre have their advantages......longevity ai't one of them.

Not sure how much those frames are. With all the labor involved I'm sure they are $$$$. I didn't realise that Schwinn bikes were back in bike shops for sale. I thought they were only sold in Walmart. What a far cry from the hayday when the original Paramounts were being made.
I missed out on the fancy lugged, silver solder brazed frames. I started riding and racing in the early 80's on plain looking steel frames. I did race on a Paramount Design Group Ti frame in the 90's but that was not a real Paramount but a marketing gimic instead even though the frame was quite good.
Later on I did contact Waterford Precision Cycles (the old Paramount shop now owned by Richard Schwinn who is building these frames) and have them build me a semi-custom Reynolds steel lugged frame. I raced on this for several years and fortunately still have them both. A few years back I sent the Waterford frame back up to the shop and had them repaint the frame Orange with Gold graphics to match the RS.:D

I liked the Raleigh Professional with full Campy myself. Much harder to come by these days. Paramounts are readilly available. Like BA prices these are all down by $4-$5 Hundred from a year ago.

I eventually sold the Paramount frame and bought a custom Assenmacher Columbus KL ultra-light steel frame and transferred most of the parts. I rode that for years but eventually sold it for no good reason :rolleyes: A Paramount connection: Sue Novarro who rode a Paramount track bike in the Olympics in the late 70's was actually riding a custom Assenmacher painted to look like a Paramount (Schwinn was some sort of sponsor). I think the bike is still hanging in his shop. Assenmacher apprenticed with Bob Jackson in Leeds, England.
Now, I've got this mtn bike I built a few years back -- finally 1-upping the "rich kid down the street" and his Schwinn Krate bike it's got active electronic suspension :D And it really works. There's a 9-volt battery connected to a sensor at each shock that controls the shock valve.
In theory, is a Brooks Professional a sport seat? I'll pretend it is!

Custom VooDoo cross, Reynolds 853, IF fork, Powdercoated to match my old Gold 914, And my Litespeed Tsali ex team bike, it's a mix of 3/2 and 6/4 Ti and this was when they were American made, it now serves Single Speed Duty. I have a newer Specialized Epic for Mtn Rides.

Well this is a good thread! I haven't been on a road bike in 23 years, until last Sunday that is. I finally got my butt in gear and got on my new De Rosa Protos and got out there. Man it hurt, but felt good too. This crowd appreciates nice machinery, whether 2 wheels or 4, human powered or gas.:)

I like to get out as often as possible. I ride on a loop that has a section that runs along the water east to west and vice versa. In the mornings I'll ride east to west and the opposite in the evenings. Most guys on bikes ride it the same way and give me a funny look. Well, there are alot of women running on this stretch and the the benefits of an approach with the rising or setting sun behind you and blinding them gives you a great opportunity to "inspect"!

6-7 k a year is great. I hope to hit that this year too. It sure is fun and will keep you young. There is no better way to get back in touch with that kid inside us than to be on a bike....And I just love dropping those young whippersnappers' butts!!:D

The "rich" kid down my block had a "green apple" crate...at least I think that was the name.........I remember riding her..... what a ride....rear slick.....it was pure heaven for me as a 10 yo......
In the 80's I was heavy into the early fat tubed Kleins and Cannondales......doing Biathalons( duathalons)..
..back in the 70's I had a Schwinn Varsity....in "blood orange"....gorgeous..but not top shelf.

I haven't really ridden since the early 90's (before kids) when I was doing about 200 miles a week. I still have my '91 Basso Ascot (MS Columbus) w/Super Record, a really nice riding bike, and an '87 Fisher Mt. Tam (Tange Prestige quad butted cro mo, fillet brazed frame by Tom Teesdale).
I have gone out a few times this spring with my 10 year old daughter on the local bike path and chasing my 15 year old son (who leaves me in the dust). I don't look forward to the initial pain involved until it starts to get to be fun, but I do love riding.....hopefully this will get me out for some after work rides.
And to get back on topic, the Paramounts have always had really nice lug work. I'm a big fan of traditionally built frames and the quality of the ride they provide... the newer bikes might be stiffer, lighter, and have quicker steering, but I think that you give up something to get there.
Cool - not too many people with VooDoos. I have a VooDoo D-Jab ti MTB hardtail I bought in 1997. Climbed like a goat. Had to switch it up for a softail (Santa Cruz Superlight) to save some pounding on my back, but I kept the VooDoo. Have a Salsa Las Cruces 'cross bike too (with disc brakes - the humanity!) and love it. That's all "modern" stuff though.Quote:

This is pretty timely for me since I've been looking for a new ride these past few weeks. Don't flame me, but I'm in the market for my first grown up road bike (time to replace the heavy mtn bike). I've been hunting down Bridgestones, steel Lemonds, and Motobecanes, etc. and reading as much as possible about all the cool vintage components.

My first 'real' job was a bike mechanic. Unfortunately, it was at Sears! :rolleyes: This was during the 10-speed boom in the 70's. The Sears 'Free Spirit' 10-speeds sold for maybe $70. I had my $675 Paramount at that time. It frustrated me to no end when customers would continually bring their bikes back in to me because they didn't shift correctly or the stamped-steel brake calipers didn't work right or whatever. How do you tell someone that they bought an absolute piece of crap and that their piece of crap is 'tuned' to perfection!! :D
Never had the money in HS to afford a Paramount, but certainly lusted after one. Instead I installed rat-traps on my 35lb Varsity and rode it several thousand miles - until the early 80s. The thing was absolutely indestructable. Wheels never went out of true no matter what I ran over.
The people on real bikes would blow by me like I was standing still even though I was in great shape. It was not until I lifted a real racing bike did I see the weight penalty and not until I rode one until I knew what a responsive bike felt like. Now I just hate bikes
Ok, I've got to start riding again too....
Had (maybe it's still around) a Schwinn Varsity in College, then a few years later I bought a nice Trek 460 that I took all the decals off of, and lightened up, and got down to a tic over 20lbs. A few years later in the mid 80's I picked up the bike that I've ridden the most which is a Razesa. Razesa made the higher end Zeus bikes towards the end of Zeus's run. It's got Columbus SLX tubing, campy dropouts, full campy super record, nisi rims, but I "think" the front fork is a cinelli, can't remember. Original paint, it's a bronze color, but the decals are cracking pretty bad.
Some absolutely stunning bike pics...keep them coming, I'll try to get a pic of mine soon.

I remember riding across town with my buddies to stare at the "Campy" hardware in the bike shop. We saved our money and it was always a race to see who could get Campy stuff on their bikes. Not much has changed except the Campy changed to Sport Seats, CIBIE, Fuchs and hot engines.
And along the way: Harley Davidson, Ducati, Honda, Suzuki, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Norton...:D
I like the motorized ones but a Paramount was what we ALL wanted back in the day.

Here’s my deal…….
A buddy of mine got me into cycling the summer of ’72 and it stayed a BIG part of my life for almost the next 20 years….
The purchase of my 911 20 years ago was start of the bikes spending more time on the wall then on the road... :rolleyes:
Starting off with a ’69 Peugeot U08, followed by the ’72 PX10 (that I got hit by a car on, fixed, and is my present touring bike) then the ’74 MASI (I had for 27 years and got down to just under 20lbs.) Then partners in a post war ‘front drive’ tandem we restored and toured with. Then an early 80’s KHS mountain bike, followed by the ’88 Fisher Pro Caliber (my present mountain bike) and finally the ’88 Colnago Master (my present road bike)……..
I’ve biked all over CA., participated in the first Human Powered Speed Association’s trails in ’75, and taught bicycle touring through the community collage system in ‘78
I’ve done Century’s, community Criterium’s, hill climbs, and mountain bike rendezvous….
And……. I’ve met some of most interesting, friendly, committed, and fit people in my life…
And I loved it all… well, almost all, lot’s of bike vs. car conflicts in 20 years.... :rolleyes:

I’ve known I needed to get back into this GREAT activity for some time … and this close to my 60th seems like just the right time to start again……

I had 4 in all 2 in Viper metallic green a Light (Gemini)Blue and a tangerine Orange one which I did time trials with in San Diego, A schwinn dealer in
La Mesa did a huge biKe trade with someone going out of business. I remember paying $320 a Bike cash which was a steal then, and helping assemble bikes for 2 weeks.
A month later I got to assist in detailing the first Light green turbo at La Mesa Porsche Audi, next summer my first Parade in a 73 914 shared with my Uncle, Rode the Green Paramount that whole parade when I was not driving

I was sorting out an old box of stuff and found an envelope with some Paramount stuff. My bike was originally silver and I had it re-painted red by Assenmacher Cycles, so this foto must be from late 70's. I swapped the original Record components for Super Record by this time as well.

Thought I'd revive this thread. A lot of us say we're going to start riding again and never do. I've been saying it for years and have occasionally started back up only to get 'too busy to ride' regularly :rolleyes: This year I'm totally back into it - riding about every other day and enjoying every mile. I feel as good on the bike as I did 25 years ago, although the recovery time between rides is a bit longer. Riding vintage iron only of course (none of that newfangled space age stuff that Brian rides)! Anybody else riding vintage stuff?

I like this thread a lot -- subscribed.
Probably an obvious point, but, I know for me -- before I ever even considered driving a car, at ages 7,8,9,10, etc. I lusted after all manner of bicycles -- they were cool and I had to have certain ones with certain options (color or gears) etc. I guess I was one of the "rich kids" and had a 5-speed Stingray with the stick shift in black.

I've never been much of a bike guy, but have been riding a bit lately on a very silly little bike.
Quick story - I took my son to go bike riding at a local corporate park a few weeks ago, and we found an abandoned, broken folding bike. At the young one's urging, we brought it home to see if I could fix it.
After a bit of messing around (including a bit of straightening some bent parts) I got it working perfectly.
It's been fun to mess with and ride. Folding it down is a real trip.
Man . . . . I am still lusting for the bikes, in spite of the fact that I've got all these cars now! Those Haro's are just too cool.

Damn, that's a great-looking bike Jim! Re: sew-ups. I just found my old Zeus spare tire holder in the bottom of my tool box and got it mounted ... the Alpineer is running sew-ups on Campagnolo Record Crono rims.

these bikes were really desired by the 7yo to maybe 10-12 yo old crowd.......road bikes were more for the older dudes....

I had the same experience a couple of years ago when trying to buy sew ups for an old Bianchi I had...I ended up selling the bike..and picking up a newerish Specialized.....regret selling the Biachi...I always got folks stopping me when I rode that bike...all Campy Record all the way around...one of the last italian built Bianchi's. Dave good advice for your sons, I redid my old Lambert fillet brazed frame that I bought in the 70s as a fixie. My son likes to ride it around town, although it's way too small for him - he can't get used to the toe clips. :rolleyes: :D He's been riding a Specialized Allez Comp that we got him for a HS graduation present - way too big and stiff for me...
I did a little research on the odd color combination on the Basso. Apparently the Celeste was a tribute to the Bianchi that Marino Basso won the world championship and Giro on, and the dayglo orange a tribute to the McLaren MP4/2B TAG-Porsche. The McLaren was the most technologically advanced F1 car of that era (mid 80s), and the Bassos felt that the Multi Shaped tubing was the most advanced frame material available to them. I don't know if many people are aware of the idiosyncrasies of these tubes, but the only round and straight tubes are the seat stays. The top tube in cross section is shaped like a lemon, the seat tube tapers to a larger size at the bottom bracket, the down tube is shaped like a raindrop, and one of the chainstays is oval and the other triangular. Supposedly the tubes were designed using a computer to counteract the different flexing action in different areas of the frame.
The bikes weren't a commercial success because of the expense of having so many different, and exclusive lugs made for each size frame - that only worked with the MS tubes. And the larger frames were not stiff enough, luckily I'm small and light enough (or was in the 80s :D) that the frame works as intended.
Nice to see he still owns the bike and has a genuine interest in it! On the other end of the spectrum, Hinault was asked about his equipment (preferences for various frame materials and gruppos) and he basically said he didn't care, I'm only interested in winning races :DQuote:

CE: I hear ya and I kinda kick myself these days for letting it go...it was the real deal and a great bike and I put a lot of miles on it....but I gotta be honest...I really like the bang bang shifting on my Specialized (that my boys have now started stealing from the garage)....you don't even have to think about shifting...the modern drive trains are really incredible and when your fat and out of shape like me, you really appreciate the hard rear end and at the same time the relaxed old man riding position. Maybe I should never drive a Boxster....;)
Been thinkin about picking up an old Basso or another classic italian for the boys....but first, we gotta build the fixey....got an eye on a frame...hopefully we can pick it up this weekend and they can start tearing things apart....what is amazing is they know absolutely nothing about how a bike works...and they find it amazing that by 8th grade we were buying and rebuilding tons of things and wearing out the Bike Warehouse catalog along the way...:)....Hopefully the fixey experience will be a good learning one for the joystick generation that inhabits my house.
I have several boxes of old bike parts in the attic...the boys can't wait to see the old gold and blue chain or the Cinelli bars and goose neck...I think I have a huge front platter up there someplace....if so, they can put it on the fixey and learn the art of getting that big monster to turn over...;)

CyclArt does great work. They painted a Della Santa that Roland built for my wife, and it still looks pristine 6 years later.
I love steel bikes. Pegoretti, Della Santa, Sachs, Llewellyn, Columbine.. I ride the Pego mainly, but the Llewellyn is just a beauty and rides fantastic also.
Dario Pegoretti builds some of the best steel frames in the world, and he is just a lovable character. He built his and her Responsoriums for us, and we let him paint as he desired...so we got one of a kind paint schemes..He put Springsteen lyrics on mine, and for my wife the lyrics from Margherita, a huge hit for Cocciante in the 80's

Thank you. Yes the Respo is Dario's stainless steel frame. It rides beautifully, stiff but still comfortable for longer rides. I'll see if I can find some pics. Richard Sachs has a long wait. IIRC he only takes new orders from prior clients, but that may have changed. He is a true artisan.

I was trying to explain to a non-cycling enthusiast friend how and why a handbuilt frame rides so much better and differently than a mass-produced frame with the same tubing. And even among handbuilts, some - as you point out - are better than others. I don't think I adequately explained it. Sure, geometry is a big part. But I would say that even with identical geometry and tubing, there are perceptible differences in ride characteristics.Quote:

allright boys here is your puzzle for the day. Found the boys a great late 80's Miele (52-53)...They stripped all the parts off of it over the weekend....with a little help from the old man...bike was pretty rusty and we needed a lot of Kroil....all done except for a recalcitrant seat post........the bike was left out in the weather and it is in there tight.....Kroil, Gibbs...heated the down tube, put the seat tube in the vice..got a bigger hammer....nothing. Got pissed this evening and drilled a couple of small holes in the lug in an effort to get oil into the space between the two pieces of metal...also drove the lug apart...nothing...I'm usually pretty good at these things, but this one has me completely flummoxed.
Boys got the fixie parts all picked out...flat black with gold anodized goodies....typical Miller restoration project....we will have $500+ into a bike that when finished will be worth $100 tops

Aluminum stuck to steel ... try ammonia (or even Drano!). Kroil/Liquid Wrench/etc. won't touch aluminum oxide. If no go, cut the seat post off an inch from the top of the lug and then cut a slot inside the seat post to free it.
And giving all us old guys hope today, Chris Horner is leading the Tour of Spain - oldest rider (41) to ever win a stage at a grand tour :)

You were reading m mind...got it soaking in ammonia tonight.....regarding cutting it off.....done...it is a POS seat tube that is super thick...can't even get a hacksaw blade down into the hole....going for drano if the ammonia doesn't help

My brother insisted they accept $30 and no less :rolleyes: He flipped it to me for $75, making an obscene profit margin off his own brother! I completely stripped it down for a thorough cleaning, re-lube and polish. 1999 Bianchi Campione with proprietary aero cro-moly tubing and Athena/Mirage/Daytona Campagnolo mixed gruppo. I've been upgrading a few of the components to Record/Super Record as I find deals.

As most others have said,....this is a great thread. And, like many others, I was also a serious rider back in
the day. I raced pretty actively from the late '60s through the middle 70's. I worked at the Campus Bike Shop
in Columbus, OH during this time and that helped fund the bike thing. It helped that the bike shop was owned
by an ex racer as well so we had access to some really neat stuff. My primary bike was a white Paramount, but
I think in 1971 I bought a Mercian. This was a departure for most of my riding buddies because it was a small
British builder, but it was a really neat bike. One of the first to incorporate vertical dropouts.
Sadly, I don't have any of the old steel bikes. Like so many, I stopped riding as work took over,...but, thankfully, I started
riding again,...and seriously,...starting in the late '80s and have been riding consistently since. I bought a Seven
12 years ago,...maybe 10 years,...I dunno,...but as much as you guys like your steel,....man,...titanium is sweet!
Ok,...well,...I do have a steel bike, but it's a cross bike,...Gunnar Crosshairs,....I know,....just not the same.

A Porsche-Campagnolo connection? Sort of. There is a specialty racing component manufacturer in Italy called O.M.A.S. I found an NOS O.M.A.S. chain ring from the 70s/80s in my tool box several years ago and thinking I would never use it, made a clock out of it! O.M.A.S. was always a bit of a mystery company. They seemed to make Campy clone parts, but often times they were more expensive. Turns out that O.M.A.S. has been making carburetor parts for Weber for years and was owned by Campagnolo in the 60s/70s. They made the titanium bits for the Super Record Gruppo. So I think I'm going to take the clock apart, clean the glue off the chain ring and put it into service on my Gitane build :)

I put that bike together back in the late '70's early '80's when it was all about light weight (the first time around) and not about aerodynamics.... It took a lot to get a steel frame road bike below an honest 20lbs. back then........

Here's the drilled Super Record crank on my Paramount. Note the 52/49 chainrings - standard on the P13 Paramount and ideal for the flatlands around here.

Ehhh Curt - it's not so bad. The chrome accents are nice (in a world of plastic bikes, a little chrome is nice). If I ever get around to repainting my old Bertin, I want to get it chromed first - it has a chrome Columbus fork, but none on the frame. The straight blade forks aren't doing it any favours, but since they are CF I'm sure, that's a result of that. At least they didn't go to some goofy way oversize headset. Some silver rims would maybe help.
but no matter what, I just cannot find any love for the new Dura-Ace cranks. Blech.
I'm with Keith,...I think some minor adjustments would help. Definitely getting rid of the Di and going to either Campy or Sram would help. The Shimano
Cranks are truly butt ugly. I think pictures taken with a normal lens also exaggerate the dopey look of the massive stack of spacers. Looks kinda like a stiff
6' person is trying to make the thing fit.
Still, I like the effort.

I like this one. I am always on the hunt for a mid 60's coppertone Paramount (mens) with upright bars and chrome fenders, mattress saddle, etc. Glitter hand grips and chrome Nervex lugs. Later bikes had two pound TwinStik stem mounted shifters hooked to Campagnolo changers...cool.

Looks like a Cinelli Unicanitor saddle which was probably original and one of the first plastic saddles. Those go for big $$ today ... $450-$650 for NOS. And that's the problem today: the bikes are not worth nearly the sum of the individual parts. Lot's of good original bikes are being stripped to the tiniest of parts. A crankset will be sold off as the crankarms (sometimes right and left separately!), the dust caps, each chainring, and the various bolts all separate :mad: But for somebody like me who is building a bike, it's easy to find really good parts :rolleyes:

BTW: I just finished up the book 'Team 7-Eleven: How an Unsung Band of American Cyclists Took on the World - And Won'. Highly recommended for anyone who was following cycling in the 1980s!

Am pleasantly surprised how many appreciate fine bicycles and the sport of cycling. Paramount, Motobecane, Masi, and Peugot where objects of lust in the early to mid 70s, just like 911s. Unfortunately all were well out of reach of a high schooler, and then poor college student. I had my trusty brown Schwinn Varsity and green Continental (stolen) which I put thousands of miles on until the early 80s when I finally bought a real bike - A Bianchi Trofeo. I was in heaven. Since then I am still riding steel, be it highly refined and ovalized. Its latest iterations are in the form of a Fondriest and a Trek steel mountain bike.
When driving the back roads, being a cyclist, I am always very appreciative when fellow drivers afford cyclists a wide European style berth when safe to pass.
Or how about lean and mean: an upright single-gear based on an Atala track frame -- all old school Campy, complete w sew-ups and a weathered Brooks saddle. Attachment 271670
So I found a very nice Campy Super Record headset on fleaBay, freshly stripped off of something. Lots of bids and I won it for a little over $100 - a fair deal for both parties. These are hard to find without wrench marks and scratches in the soft alloy. It arrives today. The seller threw everything loose into a ziplock bag and placed the bag loose inside a box :eek::confused: The alloy surfaces are now full of scratches from the trip cross-country! What was this dude thinking? It's being sent back for a refund ... :rolleyes:

A buddy of mine has become eaten up with the old bike craze. As he has done in anything else he delves into it is with both feet and incredible enthusiasm. (He started riding seriously in his early 60's.)
He's doing a couple of others that I don't have information on handy but they are both very beautiful with hand painted lugs
and other really neat details and dripping with "vintage" Campy parts. Here is the Freschi as it sat a few months ago.

A 1973 Paramount popped up on CL near me. Looks nice and a reasonable price. Too bad it's a P-15 Touring version, if it were a P-13 I'd be on it.

Curt, is that a P-10? I think P-15s had a triple up front and a real long cage changer in the back. At any rate is has Campagnolo side pulls like a P-13 that someone put on as opposed to the original center pulls. I think that bike is older than a 73 as it has the white sticker on the seat tube. See, people who pick apart cars can pick apart other stuff too!
You're right, P-10. The rake on the forks and pannier eyelets give it away as a touring bike. I think it is earlier as well. As far as I remember, the 73 had the same graphics as my 75 and that did not include the white seat tube panel.
Got back late Sat. from my annual Thanksgiving trip to points North in Calif… a trip I’ve been taking for about 35 years.
On my 3rd day out I visited friends in Fairfax in Marin County CA.….
Fairfax used to be part of my trip for years back in the 80’s… used to go mountain biking there ‘where it all started’…
In 1988 I ‘went down hard’ and me and a buddy had a 5 ˝ hour night ‘walk out’ to get me to the hospital… but that’s another story........ :o
While waiting for breakfast on my way out of Fairfax I couldn’t help but notice these wonderful mosaics…….
These are on the North side of Bolins Rd. just past the stores up from Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in Fairfax CA. at the foot of the Mount Tamalpais Watershed………….. ‘where it did all start’.......... :)

The good news is - It's great old bike...
The bad news is - It's one of about two years Fisher though that putting the rear brake on the chain stays (to keep a clean top tube) was a good idea...
So you can't ride it in the mud!!!!!!
I talked to Fisher about it and her said "Oh' yeah that was a bad idea... I can change it to the seat stays (where it belongs) but I'll have to reinforce the the bridge... it's kind'of'a deal"
So I make do...... :)
Oh yeah, I've got those same dumb chain stay brakes on my old Mt. Tam. :( I pretty much use that bike as a comfortable touring bike now, so not such a big deal. ;)Quote:

This has been making the rounds on the cycling forums: the toughest race ever, 1919 Circuit de Champs de Bataille. It ran only a few months after the end of WWI and wound through the ruins and battlefields. In snow and ice. :eek:

Leaves me stunned to read about this race. I have never, ever heard about it. Impossible to grasp the difficultly these riders faced. Horrific conditions, not to mention these riders no doubt fought in this awful war. How could they have the conditioning to finish those long stages?
I swear, I will not complain one more time about all the pot holes created over the winter.:o
Bringing this back to the original topic, I came across this 1964 P14 Paramount Track bike in full chrome on fleaBay. Awesomeness (although the horrid handlebar tape needs to be torn off and incinerated). BIN $4500.
