Hi all! Engine # 903188 was up on eBay back in March 2012. It looks like it was up there for quite a while. Does anyone know where it is now? According to PCNA, that is the engine that came in my car. Below is the eBay link. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Demetri

I sent Ben at Porforauto an email last night. He replied this morning saying he thinks it went to Japan. I am hoping he can verify.

That engine has been out of the car for thirty years, probably stayed in CA the whole time, and then goes overseas when I start looking for it. This is awesome!

Selling the car would be tough. It has been in the family for 30 years. First right of refusal goes to my uncle. Let's find the motor first and then start thinking selling.

Try what Magnus Walker did, swap the engine for a good running one and pay shipping both ways. I think in his case the matching numbers engine was a non-runner though?
It has been very hard to focus at work today! Everyone's input, advice and help is greatly appreciated. You guys rock! Dave (dporsche74) sent me his friend's email address. Thank you, Dave! I am more than willing to work out a fair deal. I hope we are both happy in the end. Please feel free to chime in with any more suggestions and advice. This is a new arena for me. I sent the engine owner an email last night. What the hell did I get myself into! Best case scenario is still a lot of time and money. The car has been sitting in my garage on jack stands for three years because I don't have time or money! I will let you know what I hear back from the U. K.
The car will certainly be worth more with the matching numbers engine and a story like this one behind it. Work out if the cost is less than the anticipated increase in value. However, as you aren't likely to sell it anytime soon, maybe this is of less importance to you.Quote:

Well, not only that, but the case appears to be magnesium and VIN 303XXX would have had an aluminum case. Stamps are not factory stamps and the support the stamping is on appears to be thinner than is commonly seen (machined down?). Much strangeness here.Quote:

Hey guys. Here is what's going on. The owner of the motor wants lots of money, at least from where I am sitting. The motor is in the same condition as when he bought it. He hasn't opened it up. Who knows what it looks like inside; it does spin freely. It will be a lot cheaper for me to build a period correct motor. There seem to be several sets of solex carbs up for sale, and I can get a 66 solex long block for a good price. In the end, I am not selling the car, so sinking a bunch of cash into it for "matching numbers" doesn't make sense. That said, I did offer to trade him long blocks, assuming I can get the other solex engine. I even went so far as to suggest we just trade blocks (cases?) at the time either one of us tears down our engines, again assumes I get the other solex engine. I'd pay the shipping and put an extra thousand or two to make it worth his time. You can just Fed Ex the blocks, right? That would make things a lot easier, insured and trackable. I haven't heard back from him. Anyone know approximately how much the aluminum 2 liter blocks weigh?

I´m not as obsessed by matching numbers as I used to be, but if I was able to reunite the original engine with a car like this, I would do my best to make it happen. Mostly because it belongs in your car and it would be very cool to have it back after 30 years, also because it would be very frustrating to know it is floating around out there.
Personally I would have offered to swap identical engine cases. You get yours back in todays condition and send him cases fully inspected and prepared by one of the best shops like Competition Engineering. In case he is worried about the condition of your engine, this would be a sweet deal and save him both time and money. If you also cover all shipping, I can see no reason to say no. Timing is good and if you don´t do it now, it will probably never happen.

Me? I wouldn't let this get in the way of finishing the car. Build a motor and wait the guy out; when he needs money, he'll call you. it's only $5-6k to swap the case later on.
Although the risk is that the price of the case will go up as the value of the car increases.

Those guys will restore it correct showroom condition and will live forever in serious collections ....worth matching restored 150-200K this year??
with the profits of the roller you can get yourself this Spring into a bad ass 911hotrod or 996TT,,930. maybe two of the three perhaps
just sitting there your going to dump tens of thousands into it and long time to get .. at the end the collectors are wanting to restore again anyways and finding the engine etc.etc...
On the flip side you purchase the engine and get it restored you made 30+ yr sitting car into something special.. a worth alot coin new weekend cabin for a family like
any WTB ad that includes 'but I have no money' does not make a lot of sense to me. I'll take a free RSR if anyone has a couple laying around. Or a free Honda Civic, or anything free that has any value.

Frank is correct. I would like to cheap out. :D "I have no money" meant it will be really hard for me to spend the kind of money it will take to buy and ship a 2 liter solex from the UK and also pay a premium on top of it. I'm not the kind of person who spends money freely. But it's not only the money, it's the time and anxiety working out the details of getting it shipped. I can't stomach it. I was not looking forward to the process of purchasing the motor, even if a fair deal presented itself (i.e., the best case scenario). To tell you the truth, I was kind of relieved when he said it would take 35k for him to ship it to me. That made the decision easy...hell no! A fair deal (20K?) would have been a big dilemma, for which I am happy and sad that I don't have to deal with.....

Dimetri as much as you don't want to face the facts I appreciate your candor and think the engine seller is being a tad on the greedy side...that said turn the tables on him and offer the car up if it's an early '65 it's worth north of $250 K reunited with it's factory mechanicals.
why not let him see what it feels like maybe he'll come to his senses ,your the only person this case really means any thing too.
As a roller your car should get maybe 75-100k to the possessor of the OG engine see how he likes those apples? B

okay, sorry to drag the discussion back, but it sounds like the original ad was seeking a specific engine for a '65 and two engines have popped up.
one engine # was 303xxx which matched the chassis #. that seems odd to me.
the other engine # was 903XXX? although i'm no expert, the 903xxx sounds more like a correct engine. however, the price of the 903XXX is not clear to me.
do i have that right?

The saga continues. I purchased a 2 liter solex long block to trade for the original motor in the UK. The deal went south. The UK says the engine is no longer for sale. Too much going on in my life to play games, so I gave up on trying to get it. The 2 liter I purchased arrived a few weeks ago. The owner told me it spins freely and appears to be a well preserved motor. My mechanic got around to looking at it last weekend. The motor is frozen. A half cup water and milk drained from pan. I spoke to the owner. He claims he didn't know and that I still got a good motor for the price and that I can sell it for 10k no problem. I got 9k into it right now. Whatever. That is not what I wanted to hear...more games. I am not sure what I should do at this point. Thinking of having my mechanic open it and documenting how far from a well preserved free spinning motor it is and trying to get some money back from the seller. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!
