My condolences for your loss. Dogs truly become such a big part of our lives. We lost our Golden Retriever a couple of years ago, we had him for almost 14 years, which is a great life for that breed. Took us a long time before we could get another dog. We still miss him.

She is a beautiful, intelligent English girl. But alas, she does not like cars
True fact - we have a lot of hardwood, and she "drinks from the bottom of the bowl" as they say... was making a huge mess. It took us one day to train her to stay in the laundry room after drinking, and wait there for someone to dry her face. Sometimes at night while the family is watching a show she will be in there for 30 minutes before we notice she is missing from her spot by the couch :D ... sure enough, she's in the laundry room fast asleep.
Best Dog Ever.

Yeah --- they do, but, after a while? . . . no real need
We've been watching Cesar Milan ('The Dog Whisperer') ever since he's been on TV. Cesar says that 'whatever you're feeling travels down the leash' and I have to say that I agree
I mean --- these guys could get sooooo crazy . . . but --- when I wanted 'em to sit still/behave/mug-for-Papa . . . all I had to do was be calm/assertive
Worked every time
I think part of what I so enjoy about having a 'pack' around --- vs 'just one' . . . is how totally involving/absorbing/satisfying it is being around these knuckleheads. I mean . . . shopping, going to the Vet, camping, having friends over? --- was just a blast . . . especially with The Kids. Sweetest mayhem --- w/ wagging tails . . . and no one minded. Even taught 'em to sing @My Little One's 21st b-day
Still get kinda choked-up just thinking about it

Nick- So sorry to hear about Ben. What a fabulous looking dog. I am very partial to labs (never have owned one but have been around so many I feel like I have). These buddies are so central to us, our families, our packs. My heart goes out to you. Remember him well.

Sort of a long story, but no way to make it short ... last Friday, on a complete whim I did a search for a Schnauzer for sale. Looking for an adult, not a puppy. We had to put one of our dogs down last fall (a Coonhound-Doberman mix), leaving our 5-year old Schnauzer Smokey alone and we decided it was time to find a companion for him. The only dog that came up was an 8-year old female. So I called. Found out the dog had been neglected and rescued only a week earlier by her original owner. The dog was 75 miles away and as I drove over there, I realized it was in the same general rural area where we bought Smokey as a puppy 5 years ago. To make a very long story short, we eventually figure out that this rescue dog is none other than Smokey's mother!
Now what are the odds here? Dog gets rescued. Advert is placed on an obscure website. A couple of hours later, I find the advert. It's the only adult Schnauzer for sale. I'm the only person who calls. The dog is my dog's mother. Was this meant to be or what?
She's still not out of the woods. She was badly matted and has skin infections. She's on antibiotics. And she's got a couple of small lumps that need to be dealt with. And she needs to be spayed. But so far, so good. They instantly bonded (do they know???) She has twice the energy of her lazy son and has already scolded him a couple of times for bad behavior! :D
The small one is the rescued mother:

Great story Curt, it was meant to be!
Great story Curt....talk about "it's meant to be"....we're on our 4th rescue(is there any better way?)...always boxers.
This one was returned twice after being adopted by other families and after a week of bringing her home I knew why...she settled in after that and has been with us for the last 2 years...a great companion...doing what she does best :)
GREAT story and outcome Curt.........

My "son" Kittums Roher, a silver Egyptian Mau. He was the best cat anyone could have ever asked for. Always waiting by the door for us when we got home, super affectionate and just an all around great cat! The best cat I've ever owned, I miss the little guy...
Nearly a year ago we lost our dog Hunter, who was a huge part of our lives. We finally decided to bring a new dog into our home.... Somewhere in that tangle of puppies is our next family member. They are Italian Spinones..... Looking forward to the trip to West Virginia to pick him up in mid-July!

That is very cool! Nina just read it over my shoulder and her comment is "that is so heartwarming" - of course she is a real dog sap. :D
We finally broke down, almost a year and a half after we lost our good old 14 year old Lab May, and got a rescue dog (Nina insisted) 3 weeks ago. Mitsa's a 13 month old Flat Coated Retriever/Border Collie, and given the possibilities, very laid back. Although she does try to make sure her new herd stays in order. I'll have to get a picture soon.
Glad your "new" pup found her family. ;)

The 2014 replacement model...
This is Tux. My first dog. Got him at the SF SPCA. Left abandoned by his former owners/family for four days in Bakersfield CA house during the recession. Was going crazy. Less than a year old. Neighborhood kids fed him through the mail slot until animal rescue came. That night the house was arsoned. Lucky pup.
He immediately trusted kids and women, not men. Probably pretty roughed up by PO.
He is very smart. Almost too smart.
It has taken over three years for him to finally say, OK, you're my guy. Now he follows me everywhere.
I am a lucky guy to be part of His pack.

Not quite ours yet, but this little guy will be ours in another 5 weeks. For now, we call him "Red" due to his collar. Red's an Italian Spinone.

After the loss of our cat last year, I contacted a breeder and somehow we ended up with 4 Norwegian Forest Cat Kittens.
They are 7 months old now.. Boys are 10+ lbs each and the girls are 8 each.
this is them a few months ago. sweetest disposition you could imagine
Attachment 339247
Norwegian Forest Cats are a wonderful breed. They are very interesting cats-
Known as the Skogkatt in its native Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, semi-longhaired cat whose rugged appearance fits its name. Despite the hardy facade, this breed is very much a homebody that enjoys the company of other pets and particularly their human companions. Their relationship with you can best be described as “on their own terms.” Yes, Forest Cats can be lap cats, but THEY will decide when to get on or off that lap. At a minimum, Forest Cats insist on being near their people in a place of their choosing: chair, bed, or desktop. A scratching post and a cat tree, preferably tall, are musts for the Norwegian Forest Cat home. These are moderatley active cats; there will be bursts of energy followed by long naps. Sensitive yet social, you will find them to be intelligent cats that adapt readily to change. Breeders are often asked if these cats need to be outside. As with all cats, inside the home is quite suitable and is certainly the safest environment. Providing interesting toys, perches with outside views, and most importantly, regular one-on-one time will result in a well-adjusted cat.
http://www.cfainc.org/portals/0/Imag...C/profile1.jpgTo the inexperienced eye, the Norwegian Forest Cat may resemble other semi-longhaired breeds such as the Maine Coon or even some random bred longhaired cats. In fact, there is considerable difference. Without a doubt, the expression of the Norwegian Forest Cat is striking and distinctive among pedigreed cats. Large, almond-shaped eyes with their oblique set and the equilateral triangle-shaped head contribute to the unique appearance of this breed. Viewed from the side, the Forest Cat has a straight profile, i.e. straight from the brow ridge to the tip of the nose. Heavily furnished ears that fit into the triangle finish the look.
The Norwegian Forest Cat has an insulated, waterproof double coat that was designed to withstand the Scandinavian winters of its origin. The texture of this coat also matches that environment – longer, coarse guard hairs over a dense undercoat. A full frontal ruff, bushy tail, rear britches, and tufted paws help to equip this feline for life in a region that borders the Arctic. Surprisingly, this coat does not require the care of some of the longhair breeds: weekly combing along with a little more attention in the springtime should cover it. Often identified by their brown tabby and white coats, Norwegian Forest Cats actually come in most colors, from pure white to deepest coal black, with every possible coat pattern and color combination in between, with the exception of the colorpoint colors as seen in the Siamese or Persian-Himalayan, such as seal point or chocolate point.
http://www.cfainc.org/portals/0/Imag...C/profile2.jpgThe fully mature (approximately age five) Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, sturdy cat, well-muscled with significant boning. Expect a male to weigh from 12 to 16 pounds; fully grown females will weigh from 9 to 12 pounds.
Although the Norwegian Forest Cat is a relatively new breed in the United States, it is a very old breed in Norway, featured in folk tales and mythology for centuries. The term skogkatt literally means “forest cat.” In all probability, this was the cat the Viking explorers took with them to keep their ships clear of rodents, the same job they had in the barns in the Norwegian countryside. Their first arrival on the east coast of North America may have been with Leif Erickson or his contemporaries in the late 900s.

Phil
Look who came home with me! He showed up at a friend's camp several days ago. I spent a couple days there. His brother brought his Lab for them to keep a day or so. Well the 17 year old Lab and the young dog didn't get along, and said he would go drop this dog off some where.
Well, I wouldn't hear of that, so I took him home. He is such sweet dog. Young and good shape. So a trip to the vet is going to happen soon to see if he is chipped. If he is, I'll find the owner. If not, I'll keep him. No name on the collar and no tag.
So what breed? Australian Shepherd?
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...pssyq3lt6i.jpg
Ours starting to get settled in our new home after a long move. At 15, barely able to see or hear, he still thinks he's "keeping an eye on things!"
Hmm . . .
. . . ya didn't give a size/weight, but --- from the bobbed tail . . . sure looks like an Aussie + something. Or Border Collie, maybe? This Little Guy 's marked like Bernese, though. Might wanna verify his age. Bernese =~St Bernard . . . w/ less hair + different marks = >100lbs
My favorite breeds are the 'working/field' dogs --- shepherds, labs, collies, usw. Bred to be physically tough/durable/nimble = can handle weather, brush, tougher terrain, getting wet/dirty/hot. They're also smart/trainable = cute don't cut it w/ me. Oh-yeah --- One Master only
Disclaimer . . . My last two dogs are Aussie-mixes. Temperament counts, though. Might wanna double-check his 'play-drive' and how he handles a roomful of people. If he's an natural 'fetcher,' then he'll be a ball to train. But if he's kooky in a crowd --- nipping, circling, general nervousness . . . then you might wanna find him a job; 'herders' need heavy exercise to tamp-down that instinct --- or they'll make ya nuts
Anyway --- good-on-you for you for taking him in
Hope he's not chipped
Definately Black Tricolor Australian Shepherd......I have a female. Great dogs..SMART!!!
He deserves a good home.
Aussie's are great dogs, energetic and very smart, hope you can find owner if not prepare to be herded.
Phil
here is my guy, Shelby, 6 years and 2 months old. He likes Porsche too!
Not chipped and no heart worms. Doc said he was an Aussie!!! Thank GOD. Not sure could deal with a mtn dog!!! You aren't the first one to mention that either BTW.
He's a handful for sure and was a favorite of the dog nurses at the Vet!!!
He's got a good home. So much for a rescue dog being cheap. I have almost a grand in him now and no telling how much the fencing of my back yard will cost. He's worth it. Thanks!!!
My 15 year old Jack Russel.

An update on my story several months ago about finding the mother of our Schnauzer. She got very sick in November with an infected uterus and had surgery. It was sort of touch & go for a week or two but she eventually came out of it better than ever. FYI, we've never had a female dog before and the vet explained to us how critical it is to have females spayed at an early age. Females who are not spayed have a short life span and high probability of health issues. All news to us.
We're currently dog-sitting my daughter's new dog - a stray that wound up on her porch in Louisville and wouldn't leave. Good dog, about 1 1/2 years old. But she likes to chew up every toy she finds .... who did this? :D
Attachment 362979
That's awesome. Thank you very much. I've been using a Chuck It! to toss balls around. I think this could be pretty fun for them. The smaller terrier cheats, she knows from my body language when I'm going to throw the ball, so she watches me. The bigger one watches her and chases the ball when she runs. So she always gets a head start and always gets the ball. With something like this, they can control when the ball is thrown. Awesome.

The dogs that we keep with us today are not the same creatures that came out of the wilds, millennia ago . . . to share our food and our fires and our society. They've been bred and trained and used by us --- prolly from the moment we came together
Dogs, now --- are our creations . . .
. . . and though they may be chosen now for their looks or their pedigree or their intelligence --- that's not exactly what we made them for, Back Then
Dogs were tools
To hunt our prey . . .
. . . to guard our stuff . . .
. . . to tend our flocks . . .
. . . even to haul our goods
I don't ask much from mine . . . just do as I say, behave yourself, and travel with me
But what do they ask from me? They don't . . . but what do they need?
I used to volunteer in an animal shelter, and, after being around those animals . . . I'm not sure most people have any idea what that means
One of my greatest pleasures? --- is finding out what my dog 'is'
Like these guys . . .
. . . frisbees or flyball . . .
. . . obstacles or flocks . . .
These guys didn't just show up here, one day . . . well --- most of 'em, anyway
Somebody took the time/made the effort/brought them to a place --- to let them do this . . . retrieve and herd and chase and run
Lucky dogs
Aussie 'death stare' . . .
As Georg (#110) has left us in december and we'll get our new rescue after we've moved to the new home I will I have to post a pic of another man's dog, which obviously has a better taste in Cars than Georg did when he entered the footwell of a Ford.

great looking boy
whats the tape for?
Thanks, Joel . . .
. . . + he's as well-behaved/good-natured as-can-be
The green tape was for having some dew claws removed; the front one was a claw that he'd already ripped --- pretty-busy Guy. The blue is for an IV (I think). This was in the garage, coming home from the Vet . . . bit more subdued than usual
Never had t' do claws like that on any dog before . . . or since
My boy's now 8 months......
Attachment 366919
I love your dog pictures!!! So how old was he when you had the dew claws removed? My boy the rear have been removed. But the front ones are plenty sharp. I have to watch during bath time. I guess I need to do some trimming.
I figured him for around a year old and the vet agreed. He is dumb as a rock though. He is very intelligent, but has been taught nothing. No sit, heal, stay, etc. He won't fetch a ball or Frisbee... or play with his toys. Less the knotted rope but only if you bug him with it. He really is pretty low energy laying around the house napping unless I crank the ATV up. He has been staying in my house okay with little casualty. I have cage for night time, and when I can't watch him. He won't go potty on a hard surface. I think he was in a kennel with a concrete floor maybe? Puppy mill breeding stock perhaps? I just can't figure why anyone would have a beautiful, friendly, loving, smart dog and teach it nothing???
Oh, he also had never been in a vehicle, as he would stumble and fall of the back seat while driving. I can't imagine because all dogs like to ride. He is happy and has the hang of it now.... rear door windows covered in nose smudges!!! :)
Hey, Paul . . .
This is one of those topics that can take over this site. I grew up with dogs, was without one for decades . . . then, brought one back into my life . . .
. . . 'for the kids'
Now? . . . they're a passion. Right up there all my others
The Vet brought up the issue w/ the dew claws. One had already been ripped loose by then, so --- when she suggested that the rest should go, as well . . . I thought fine. Little Guy was less than a year old, then, so --- it was easy . . . for both of us
As for teaching any dog any thing . . . that's the part about finding out what your dog 'is.' Mine 's a natural retriever, meaning . . .
. . . throw anything around him ---- absolutely anything . . . . and he's after it . . . without hesitation or even thinking about it. Can't help himself
It's how I picked him. Pulled him out a box of 6 others. Set him on the floor, whimpering, not sure about what was going on. Then? I rolled a ball --- and he was gone. Even at 8 weeks . . . just couldn't help himself
He's 12, now . . . and we still play. We're just a bit more careful . . . = walk/stretch, warm-up, play, cool-down, walk/stretch, groom, water + food . . .
. . . + lotsa 'scooches'
Never spent a day outside. Always lived inside. I have rules and he has a nice bed. Still, two walks a day --- about 2.5 hours. Good food. And lotsa hikes, trails, climbs. Also shopping malls. (Loves crowds --- especially at Christmas) And peoples houses. And car trips. Puts up w/ my BMW, but . . . I need to get him a proper truck, again. Great companion
His name 's Porter . . . after this guy in a Mel Gibson movie
....
Jim
sorry to hear..I cannot imagine the heartache.
we re-homed a puppy....last yr..Im still heartbroken..and I had him for 4 mos only.
Jim ... No! I am heart broken.
So sorry ... Hardly find the words.
We we all loved Bella so much. What a peach of a dog.
OK I snuck her doughnut bits. I admit it.
Sorry my friend.
I'm SO sorry Jim........ She was always there, and always smiling... she will be missedQuote:
Bella left this world yesterday. She was a wonderful friend, companion and a vital part of our Team at EASY. She had way too many friends to count and this place and our house are just not going to be the same without her. Damn it, I miss her.
Jim
. . . world's full of dogs ---------------------------------- that nobody wants
We found room
...
Sorry to hear that Jim. The only thing I can say is don't wait too long of a time like I did before getting another buddy. RIP Bella.

:) Nice dogs!!! The snow pic... Wow!
I've had mine for almost 3mo. since the rescue. Dog Lyme disease cured, neutered, and he has settled in nicely. And his undercoat is crazy!!! I've ran a wide comb and bought a "rake"... I think I have removed at least two dogs worth of hair off of him!!!

He is SO smart and a such a fast learner!!!
Furminator
Had to put this beautiful, highly spirited, 911R of a dog, Golden down today. Even those of us who have loved and lost know how lucky we are. I'll remember her always and she will make me smile for the rest of my life.
I'm sorry to hear that. Goldens are the best - I'm on my 3rd one. You did the right thing not to let her suffer. They are very stoic dogs (bred to retrieve in water and on land) so they will not tell you how much they hurt.
Our first dog was an Only Dog --- and/so she could be a bit 'crabby' 'round other people for it
We fixed that . . . with our next (five!) dogs
Canines are meant to live in 'packs' --- they're super-social . . . which is prolly why they do so well w/ people
I just happen to think that they do even better . . . . . with dogs AND people . . .
. . . and The More = The Better
Here's our pack doing a little 'visiting' w/ the neighbors . . .
Some of my best times + fondest memories
.
'. . . Time for a walkie, yet? . . .'
...
'. . . how 'bout now? . . .'
..
Such a pretty dog!!! What breed? Mix?
My rescue is doing well. He is opening up more and more. Even fetching a ball and frisbee!!!

"Babe" Demonstrating proper use of an armrest
Nellie and her favorite pastime
Yup. Lab + Border Collie, me-thinks . . . more-or-less. Looks like a white dog that somebody dropped a really big ashtray on
But an interesting fellow. Of the five that we had, I'd thought he was the dumbest --- kinda slow on the take-up, ya know? Learned, well-enough . . . just not all-that quick. Turns out that he was probably the smartest. He's quiet, reserved --- + actually pretty shy . . . what's called an 'omega' . . . and it's his reserve that I took for dumb. But he can learn almost anything that I take the time to show him. He's also super-intense --- has the 'Aussie Death Stare' down. And he mumbles + growls + chirps so much, he would talk if he could
Howls in his sleep, too. Which is weird because --- he only howls at sirens, so . . .
. . . does he dream about sirens?
He's also super sweet. I only have a leash on him 'cause it freaks people out to see him without one when we stroll. But I can take him anywhere --- a really great house guest. Even gets along with cats
Way-to-Go, Paul!
I think that dogs that do stuff with people are the happiest. Riding in car, chasing a ball, going places w/ Papa/Momma/the Brood, seeing/sniffing/getting into 'stuff' . . . is WAY better than a life spent in a yard, somewhere --- alone. OK-OK --- so they bark sometimes, or they're always peeing on something (or threatening to), or seem to shed a whole houseful o' hair every time you turn around. Seriously --- if I'm ever connected to a crime-scene, it'll prolly be because of Porty's hair that I left behind . . .
. . . but --- I can NOT imagine being without him
He's 12, now
Home stretch
Spend a lotta time together
..
. . . great shots, You Guys
Can almost smell the dog-breath!
..
Truck dogs are awesome! :) Cute picture of Nellie and her ball!!! :)
Charlie pretty much goes everywhere I go. Even along for an afternoon ride on my tractor! He can sleep anywhere! :)

Hopefully by full season when I am the busiest I'll have a fence erected. Then I am planning on looking for another rescue herding dog for a buddy so he won't get lonely.
Who likes dogs??? NOT ME!!! Because I LOVE DOGS!!! :D :D :D :D
Sofa companions: The new rescue learning from the 15 year old boss.
This is one of my favorite threads. Our buddies are just amazing. I am so glad to have a couple of rescues in our pack.
As we are moving to a new home in may we did a little "thank you" poster for our former vet with the rescues of the past 20 Years.
In case you wonder why we had some of them only for such a short time - we mostly take the older ones or the ones with medical issues.
Attachment 377936
I hope I get the fence done before end of may so we can get our "new" old Bullterrier Cleo - 1/2 year without dog is hard.
UAI, I don't know your name, but that is AWESOME!!!
'So HEY! . . .
. . . what's that look?
You thinkin' . . . . what I'm thinkin'?'
16 year old mechanic.
I thoroughly enjoy these postings.
Great dogs.
Wonderful how much they are appreciated and cared for.
My Bubbies. Just got a fenced in yard for them and maybe more. Uli,you are the best.
She is our third golden. 26 years of having the first two wonderful dogs did not prepare us for this little monster. She is destroying the house and looks adorable doing it.
Here's our "new" old dog Cleo.
She's now 6 1/2 years old and has been sitting in rescue all her life with barely any chance of getting adopted as she's afraid of people.
She is a bit different to all our previous Bullterriers - she doesn't know anything and continued her daily program as the last years - sitting for more than 20 hours a day in her cradle.
She is so afraid of people (this includes me too) that she doesn't even eat if you're looking her direction.
Now after 5 weeks we got her at least out of the cradle and on the sofa - that's where a real Bullterrier belongs - and she starts enjoying it - with the disadvantage that now she doesn't want to leave the sofa to go outside or anywhere else.
She doesn't know a collar or leash and is like frozen if she wears one - you may carry her around but she won't move.
So she'll be a tough one to get her into a normal dog's life.
Attachment 390409
Wonderful story. You and your family are truly Cleo's angels....
Keep us updated on your progress with her, Uli.
Still miss our Ben but thought the pic says it all. We have started to discuss getting another friend but the hole will never be filled ...
Here's our Golden, Indy, who LOVES to paddle board with us
Attachment 390599
My first Golden was named Indy also. I have never been without two Goldens since then.
Here are Lucca and Sabine.
nickd- Ben, what a super dog! Sorry for your loss.
