Here I go again: '74 Euro Carrera

After almost 2½ years of working on this project I thought it was finally time to post here about it. Let me first start off by saying that this project could not have happened without a lot of help from friends and previous owners who helped me to not only finish the car, but also piece together the complete history and documentation back to 1974.

The car is a 1974 'Euro' Carrera. As many here probably know, these cars were the spiritual and mechanical successors to the legendary 1973 Carrera RS. This particular car is special for a variety of reasons, but as I dug deeper into these little understood cars I discovered that the very early '74 cars have their own uniqueness.

In much the same way that the early '73 RSs were special because of lightweight panels, glass, and other features, the earliest '74 cars had the same rear flares, torsion tube reinforcement, orange hood badge, and rear grill as their predecessor. According to sources, somewhere in late '73 early '74, these features were phased out of production of the '74 cars.

This car is one of the earliest cars, built in October of 1973 only two months after the summer break and the factory started to produce the G-Body cars. The original owner worked for Porsche Hamburg and he was a racer who also taught at the Scuderia Hanseat driving school at the Nurburgring. He raced 3 times at LeMans in the '70s. Because he intended to use his car at the track, he ordered it with optional 7" & 8" Fuchs (6" & 7" were standard) and the optional upgraded suspension with Koni shocks.

Because at the time he could not order a ducktail in Germany, he did what many Germans did. He had the dealership install the ducktail and then had the car individually certified at the local TUV before taking delivery. In addition to the dealership installing the ducktail, he also requested that they install a roll bar, which was TUV certified at the same time. Luckily I was able to find all the documentation for this by way of the car's Farhrzeugbrief.

In the intervening years the car has lived a storied life. While in still in Germany in the late 1970s, a subsequent owner fell in love with the look of Porsche's new Turbo and (using all factory parts) had the car converted to a Turbo look and painted black. It was eventually sold to a U.S. Serviceman who imported the car into the United States.

After a few years of ownership, the car was sold to another gentleman in North Carolina, at some point being painted white and converted for track use by his son. I have been in frequent contact with father & son, and they have been overly generous with their time and stories.

After it's life as a track car, it was sold to an energy speculator in North Carolina and ended up in the hands of Chuck Miller at Miller Motorsports. Chuck disassembled the car and had the body returned to original spec and color, awaiting a mechanical refurbishment. Unfortunately, the owner of the car had a change of heart at some point, and the car got sold as an incomplete basket case.

I saw the car a few years ago while in this state. Luckily I was able to buy the car from the interim owner. Finishing the job has taken much more time and money than I anticipated, but when is that ever not true? Using the internet and Ryan Snodgrass's seminal Carrera book I think it's safe to say that we're pretty close to completion. The 911/83 engine has been completely rebuilt from top to bottom, as has the transmission. I did take the liberty of installing an LSD, which was not on the original build sheet.

The body itself was repainted in the factory original Continental Orange (E7) and thankfully needed only the minimal amount of work to return it to completely factory spec. Full credit goes to Chuck Miller and his guys at Miller Motorsports. If the body and paint hadn't been done to such a high standard I would never have embarked on this journey.

Other than painting, powder coating, and plating, we kept the suspension mostly stock except for adjustable swing arms. A fair number of new bits were used, but I really wanted this car to run and ride as close to it did in 1973 when it came out of the factory. Take note: we refinished the Konis after these pictures to a more accurate orange-red.

Technically, the Fuchs should be black for this year but I couldn't resist taking a little liberty and going with an RSR finish, capped off with a set of Pirelli CN36 tires.

Inside the car remains mostly stock, with the addition of a set of '1974 correct factory sport seats with Blackwatch Tartan inlays. The correct blue carpet and midnight vinyl door cards were sourced as well. Take note: the seat hardware has since been corrected.

Since the car has chrome exterior trim, I also built up a set of chrome window switches from period Mercedes and Porsche parts. Apparently, the tell for a chrome trim '74 is that these window switchs need to have chrome surrounds. Most cars I've researched have the easier to find black window switches. The midnight vinyl is hard to detect unless you're in sunlight.

Assembling the rest of the car has taken way more time than I imagined. Even though so much is still available from Porsche, buying the car in boxes means that we are constantly having to stop and chase down even the smallest parts. I have strived for near-perfect when it comes to hardware, although I don't intend to have the car judged.

Some of the fun details boil down to paying homage to the previous owners. I found this vintage grill badge for Scuderia Hanseat on German eBay. As the original owner was an instructor and later helped manage the club, I thought it would be a cool touch. I also bought a vintage LeMans decal because of his subsequent race history.

Since the car was built in early October 1973 and Porsche had only cinched the Championship at the end of September I think it's more accurate that the car carries the earlier '72 only decal. I don't believe that Porsche would have been able to design and print a batch of '73 stickers at the time this car was completed.

Because the car was also ordered with a roll bar, I was able to source a correct German made Matter roll bar from Don Ahearn. I also tracked down a correct date stamped Gloria Avus fire extinguisher from right here on the Early S registry. Also, as an homage to the IROC series, I covered the radio delete plate in the appropriate shift sticker. ;)

Not pictured are the extensive amount of period receipts and comprehensive factory brochures that I put together for the car. Basically the car has every piece of paper you can have for a 1974 Euro Carrera, including all period magazine articles (in English and German). My goal was to make the most complete example of these cars as I could, seeing as how I was starting with such great raw materials.

So while it is not finished yet, here are some pictures of where the car stands today. We are hoping to have it finished in time to be in Luft 9 in San Francisco. If you happen to be at the show, please come by and say hello. Take note: the wheels in these pictures are not the final set. I actually have another set that are RSR finish but lighter than these. Also, the front and rear lower valances need to be changed but that will happen after the car finally comes home and I start getting tips on what else needs to be corrected.

Mike- I couldn't think of a better steward than you to do this restoration and get all the little details right that separate a good restoration from a great one. I saw the car and motor (which were separated) when I was at the shop for a visit and knew it was going to be special, and it certainly is. I can't wait to see it once completed.

JB, I only did it on the seat centers. I didn't see anything in Ryan's book that led me to believe it should have been anywhere else. Technically that exact fabric wasn't available until 1975 so I took some liberty there as nothing else seemed 'right'.

Was it a generic term used to cover all versions or side scripts, or did this car actually come with Porsche lettering? Also does anyone know what “shetland” cloth looks like? Thanks

Nice catch. The car should technically have PORSCHE scripts like the '73 IROC cars but I opted for the more common (and still correct) CARRERA scripts. The Shetland cloth is pictured below. So as I said, I made a few detail changes within the realm of what was possible in period.

The only mechanical deviations from bone stock were: Adjustable swing arms in the rear, Limited Slip Differential, Paragon 915 Shifter, Mechanical Chain Tensioners.

The cosmetic changes were: Sport Seats, CARRERA side scripts, Chrome trim (instead of black), RSR finished Fuchs.

In case anyone is wondering how I passed the time during this looooong process, I spent a lot of energy tracking down every conceivable piece of factory paperwork for the car. Manuals, brochures, you name it. If it has anything to do with the European '74 Carrera and was printed in 1973-74, I now have it. It helped, but the waiting still sucked. ;)

All kidding aside Mike, your eye for the getting the satanic details “right” and building it as close to how it came from the factory, as a special wishes car from 1974, is second to none. As we all know, this isn’t just simple slapping a duck tail on, adding a set of Mini-lites, then thinking it’s a proper factory hot-rod. It’s all about getting the details right.

I have liked to read about your earlier builds, but this one top's it as I too am partial to -74's. Love it, and especially that you changed some things to your likings ;)

I decided to remove the adjustable swing arms and return to the correct, 1974 version. It was the one thing that bothered me as they seemed to stand out too much as incorrect. With that being said, we were able to align and corner balance the car far beyond my expectations. Total weight with a few gallons of gas is 2,227lbs.

Hi Rick, we actually added weight when we put in the sport seats. Otherwise the car is bone stock. I should say that there's no oil in the hard lines or front cooler yet though.

Quick update as the car nears completion. I thought I had the fire extinguisher covered with a period correct Gloria. I wasn't a huge fan though as those were seen from the mid '70s up until the early '90s. It seemed a bit too new for the car. Or at least I felt it could be misconstrued as incorrect.

Well, I have to thank Rick Cabell for coming to the rescue with probably the nicest, N.O.S. Auto Total fire extinguisher that I've ever seen. What's better still is that it's dated 1973, so it's perfect for my car which was built in October of '73. Huge shout out to Rick.

A friend has a '76 Continental Orange 911-S.

Ah so maybe the 76 MY was the first year for Cont Orange.

I guess it's possible for sure. I'm not sure where I read it, but I thought that I had seen E7 referenced as Continental Orange. It would be strange for Porsche to have a color with no name and only a color code. I think the marketing material would be somewhat dry without a better name than just 'orange'. Since I have all the period literature and manuals I will definitely be sure to look and see if I can pin it down.

A few years back I had a continental orange 911 SC, 1982 PTS. The door jam tag told me nothing. The COA said PTS but not the color. Then one day I removed the passenger door panel. Under the virgin vapor barrier it was spelled out. Fan the pic open and it’s clear as a bell. Color 107, continental orange.

Turns out that the color is simply E7 Orange, not Continental so thanks for setting me straight. When you look at the pictures of Rick’s SC it’s clear that Continental Orange is a bit more saturated. Speaking of which, here’s a few pictures after we had the paint corrected and the car ceramic coated.

In trying to figure out how to accommodate the sport muffler, we decided that since the rear valance currently on the car has already been modified by a previous owner we were free to continue to do so. If I ever revert back to a factory stock muffler I'll have to get a new valance, but I would have had to anyway in order to make the car correct.

Wow, and to think I bought a pair of those in Germany in 2001 for $45K. Had a heck of a time getting $35k for each, landed in the states.

I just came back from a long weekend of driving with like-minded enthusiasts and crossed over the 6,000km mark on the odometer. The car was fantastic and we even got to spend some time on a mile long runway for some high speed runs. The only change I have made is that I sent the seats to Autobahn Interiors. The Blackwatch was not correct for 1974 and the vinyl was also incorrect so they went in for proper 1974-75 Blue Madras fabric and 'pigskin' vinyl. With the blue accents I really feel like the car has a 'Gulf' livery feel.

Thanks Rick. Yes, it was the resistor between the light and the alternator that was needed. Works a charm now, and starts charging at 1200rpm.

So after getting stranded a few times from charging issues (now fixed), I've been paranoid about the alternator. As a result I decided to have a voltmeter added. For a nominal fee, I think it came out great!

Perhaps I'm fickle, but after having Black Watch Tartan and then Blue Madras, I decided that the factory sport seats were just too heavy for how I use the car. As a hot-rodder at heart, I decided to take a page from the factory and model the interior after the 1974 Carrera RS 3.0, IROC cars, and Carrera RSR lightweights as pictured here:

According to period pictures and some conversations with knowledgeable people in our hobby, Porsche did not offer a matching 10k rpm tach for the G-Body cars until much later into production. According to one source, it wasn't until the SCRS that you could get a proper 10k tach without the silver needle of the LWB era. Looking at period pictures as well as restored cars that went to auction (IROC, Carrera RS 3.0, etc.) I can clearly see the silver dot 10k tach. That now goes on my next wish list!

Two more updates from the past week. First, I moved the shifter up on top of the carpet as I’ve seen in period pictures. Next, a pair of excellent reproduction Repa harnesses with the proper European orange thread tracers from David in the U.K. My punch list is getting smaller by the day. :cool:
