Danger, danger Wil Robinson. You and your cars just might be on Google Street View.

"Holy sh_t"....the expletives were flowing after a buddy of mine sent me a screen shot of my address from Google Street View.

Last time I had looked at street view, the pics Google had in there was when the house had just been built and we were just moved in.
Five years later obviously Google has been down our street with the Street View car taking new pics.
Imagine my surprise when I saw this:

It took about 15 minutes for the ramifications of this to sink in.
Ok, now everyone in the world knows a bright green Porsche resides at this address.
Not cool....very not cool.

I've contacted Google thru their "report a problem" link and requested they blur out not only the car and people, but my entire house as well.

I think this is a real problem and supposedly according to what I've read, this is NOT an invasion of privacy issue.
In reality, it really is.
Google Street View is quite a useful tool for any crook or person with bad thoughts/deeds in mind.

So beware.
Monitor your Google Street View images and anything else that might unknowing be on the Web.

in deed not cool...this last summer the google car passed twice(both directions) my house..i gave em the finger...twice

Yet great for checking out prospective buyers and sellers of items.

I just re-checked my street. They apparently don't do short dead end streets with no turnaround very often. Mine still dates from Aug 2011 when 4 of the 5 lots here were bare. Mine being one of them. Will watch for them to return someday. I don't care if they show the '96 Tacoma in the driveway, but not the Porsche in the garage.

hard to believe they don't see the problem, and remove it immediately......

I'll let everyone know how long it takes for Google to blur this out.....

If you have a mortgage or a credit card or cable bill? . . . ditto



There are services you can purchase that can go out and 'scrub' some of the stuff that's out there --- but not public records. And 'invisible' costs



Privacy? No such right . . . read our Constitution . . . = nothing 'bout it

Privacy disappeared when they gave us our SSNs. And cameras are everywhere --- every phone comes with one

Sometimes the lack of privacy works in your favor. My brother in law is in the data business. I was scammed by a guy selling parts through WTB post. He insisted on using Zelle. He was nowhere to be found but using the phone number required when using Zelle my brother in law found his current address and a cell # he had used in the last 2 hours. I filed a complaint with the local police giving all the details to an investigator. 3 days later I got a Zelle refund for the full amount. True story

Photo doesn't look familiar.
And no....I don't have a red Porsche.
My house is in the country and sits on over 1 acre....not in a box home community like the pic you posted with the red Porsche.
My Early S signature doesn't even have a location on it...does it?

My other concern besides Google showing your house (and how nice it could be) was the fact that there was one
of my kids in the pic.
With all the creeps in today's world, I don't like that info getting out there.

Bottom line, it should NOT be legal for a company to take pics of your personal "private" property and post it on
the web without your permission.
That's just what I call decency and right vs wrong.
Google does it for purely financial (greedy) reasons.

I have no problem with Google photographing public areas, restaurants, parks, etc.
But people's private property should be off limits.

I'm of the opinion that sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich just doesn't make much sense either.
Just so you know....I don't worry or obsess about things like this.
I take action so I don't need to worry or obsess.
Then I can enjoy life all I want to at that point.

Fortunately, I live in a gated community. We don't allow the press, GoogleEarth or unauthorized vendors through the gate. This keeps out the first level of riff-raff but not the professional thieves.

Google responded very quickly in my view. Now my entire home including the car, kids in the driveway is all blurred out.

Not going to point out names on this thread, but some responses were really uncalled for and unhelpful....but that's the day and age we live in I guess.
You can believe and say what you what, but at the end of the day, it's just not OK for a company like Google to be posting images of your private property
all over the internet without your consent. Happily they resolved my situation in a timely and satisfactory manner. Case closed.

My point of view as a retired IT guy, where part of my duties involved internet privacy and security is that @skinnerd's concern is valid. Google and other internet companies make billions by the unauthorized use of whatever personal info they can scavenge. Staying silent is almost as good as giving them permission.

I'm mildly surprised at how quickly Google dealt with it. Not that they acceded to the request, but the speed of the response. Better than I would have expected.

On the other hand, Google street view's potential privacy issues pales in comparison to what millions of people give away voluntarily on Facebook and the like...

The amount of "data" that Google, Facebook, etc get for virtually free is staggering.
And then they turn around and sell it, our information and data....all of this without getting our permission or compensating us.
Most folks are pretty clueless about this....head in the sand as I said before.
People that go along with all this mindlessly will be just fine in the new authoritarian, serveilling society that is quietly growing up around us all.

It still surprises me how many people used the 'free' "what-do-you-look-like-in-40-years" like apps on FB (being used by a company in Russia to improve their facial recognition SW) or how many people use those Alexa devices freely.
(which we all know purely exist to map your purchasing behavior)
Even if you are aware of these things, you still get caught out sometimes because companies don't tell you all they're doing.

My wife and I were discussing how stupid time-shares were two days ago, when walking the street. Suddenly yesterday she received three (!) advertisements on her FB feed on time-shares.
Coincidence? I think not.
So one of our phones must have been 'listening', even though we're both not aware of any such application running. Creepy!

Anyway, glad you got it fixed Doug, and a reminder for us all to at least be aware of what you share and what not.

Anyone who thinks FB is "free" doesn't realize they are the product. "Don't be evil" was actually in Google's corporate code of conduct. I'm not so sure they're actually following it now. Today the news came out that Google is in the process of collecting the detailed personal health information of millions of US citizens. I'm not reassured.

Odd how Google can block your house from the screen during the entire street view drive past it. I am not trying to be a ass-hat, but point out how much information is already out there on EVERYONE. It took me 9 minutes to Google search and confirm on Google Earth where you live (thanks to the original posted image. You might want to take that down). If you haven't done it before, Google your name and find out how easy it is to find information about your life. It isn't just Google and FB. In Oregon, lots of records are public and out there for all to discover. I would love to join a class-action suit against whomever has profited from my personal information. In the back of my mind I know I signed some of those rights away when I chose, and continue to play in Mark Z.'s playground. I think this site sells ad space to those tracking my habits too. Should this be an Off Topic thread now?

I'm really glad you made this post. That's a legit concern I'd never considered. Does google announce when they're doing that though? Seems like there's no way to avoid it.

Overhead only views in rural America. The state of VA uses the company below.
Resolution for the public sector is pretty good however I'm quite sure they "could" read the tags on your drawers if you're walking around outside in them and were a national threat.:rolleyes:
