Sam -
That's disgusting ! - that you have a car like that AND the plate frames. (do you know if it was orig. sold from there ?)
Oh yeah, nice work (pic#2)
the plate frames I picked up when a local repair shop that was going out of business, there were thirty guys sifting through boxes of stuff and someone happened to mention the name Vasek Polak and at that point it clicked in my brain that there was a set of frames over on this guys wall so I walked over and grabbed them off the wall and took them over to the owner and asked how much? well he looked at me and said give me twenty bucks, needless to say at that point everyone else is asking, do you have any more and of course the answer was no.
every once in a while you just get lucky
my 67 was picked up at Zuffenhausen by the original owner
Oh why don't I see anything wrong with the picture of Sammy's car, have I bin out in the Casinos all nite again, and am I that jaded not to care anymore, that it is just a normal picture of a 911 and not a car from Toon Town....next I'll be seeing Bo Hoskins hanging with a Animated Babe that sounds like Kathleen Turner
 ;) :D
Hey Tom. Since Stoddard is in Ohio I think it is only fitting that it be on an Ohio car!
Did I mention I am in Ohio................. ;)
cornpanzer, dont forget, im from ohio too (remember we met at the taj ma garaj show in june)
Tom,
if its for sale, PM me
Looking for a Chick Iverson Porsche trim ring.....

How about the one and only real Porsche personalized California plate to wrap it around?
Looks like Peter & Sheryl Dunkels Carrera 2 'bubble car' ... they keep it in one of those air bubble car covers in their museum... wonderful car
I'm still look'n for an original Circle Porsche/Audi - Long Beach frame...
Sithot,
Forget those Ohio guys, the Stoddard frame you have deserves to be on a car that was actually restored and brought back to it original condition there!
I might be able to think of one. ;)
Thanks,
TKO,
maybe not a full resto, but mine had a total repaint & body work (ie any dings or minor rust repairs), suspension completley gone through to be made like new there in 84 :) :p
Harry,
Darn, you got me!
Cheers,
Tom, how 'bout that Stoddard frame for the one-and-only plate in Vermont?!
Looks like SWB SAM's frame is one from the early days.
Mine is from the last days of the dealership. I went there to get a t-shirt, which were all sold out. The parts guy gave me a frame. He told me to "hold on to it"
The original dealer plate frame got me thinking.
How many cars still have the original crest on the hood? I know there are alot of repros, I know one NOS went for some serious money
How common is the original crest today?
no pic on file...but yeah, I have the original crest...don't think it's ever been off the car.
So that's it so far in vintage dealer frame reference? We GOTTA do better than this! (Sam's brilliant frames excluded of course).
Ray, is the newer Vasek frame plastic or metal?
Paul, either you secretly have that car painted every month, or that color shifts like the San Andreas in different light. Love the matching garbage can :D . How much would the value go down if you removed and re-installed that crest?
Pile of reciepts for "Tourist Delivery" from Max Moritz GMBH. My cars original owner flew to Germany for delivery. I have the round German plate and the 30 day temporary registration that goes with. I also have the stack of letters and shipping info that follows the car onboard the ship to California.
No plate frames though. Shawn.
edit: yeah, wholy crap, Pauls car does keep gettin' better looking. Sweet Bench mark. S.
Actually, you're very close Chuck...yes, this is Dunkels' C-2. However the "bubble car" (aka "pheasant under glass") is a concours-level silver speedster.Quote:

RC70s and Sithots badges look different to me. Maybe it's the blurry image of RC70s that is fooling my eye but.... I've got two identical early badges at home. I'll post pics later. I think mine look more like Sithots.
Badges? Pretty easy to tell the old from the new, seeing them side by side. Tom's pic is sharper focus..The license plate frames? Back when I was buying new P-cars, I usually tossed 'em as soon as I drove the car home. Didn't want to advertise for the dealer. I'm thinking many others did the same? In my case, I'm sure it's no big loss. My '66 912 came from a VW dealer, as did my '69 912. The '70 T was Continental Porsche Audi in Portland...None of these frames would be considered hot items at a swap meet, I'm sure...gotta be stoddard, Brumos, Vasek Polak, one of the "hot" dealers, right?
70SATMan, please post your badges. I agree with you. I see a difference between mine and Sithot. I don't think it is just the photo quality.I am assuming it is the original from on my 72 S Targa.
Could it be a repro? Or did they change bages throughout the years?
We need the Super Secret Badge Police!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ray, hard to tell in your photo...the definition of the lines on the horse's hooves hard to make out. Tom's badge and mine are VERY similar, though I think the gold in mine looks a bit more "golden"? Orange vs. green surrounding color could be a factor...I do know that repros are made. I've never seen one, but I understand the quality isn't the same...
The ultimate Porsche plate frame? Rennman may have both ......
I'll post the pics tonight after I get home from work. There are differences is the Prancing Pony and I've seen very distinct differences in the backside too. I assumed it was a difference between the original castings and the first run of repros which I've heard was very close on the enamel colors. I can't believe that the company making these for Porsche had only one mold and molds only last so long. It could explain the slight differences. My two have the exact same irregularities in the casting on the backside so I know they came from the same mold. The first came off my 70S which I know was original back to 75. The second one I bought awhile back.
Anyone with a first run of the repros that could post a pic?
Here are mine. I've seen some where they are pebbled on the back like in the field of the shield in front. They also had the 901. Mine aren't pebbled on the back.
Here's a suppossed 67 original.
Tried to upload the picture of the back but, it's to small. This one is pebbled on the back.
nope...not gonna pull mine for a peek at the backside...
I'd be happy with a good digital picture of the front of yours PWD. I know yours is a reference. There's got to be someone close to you with a digital cam.
There are differences on the fronts as well. I wonder if Frank G. took any pictures of his reference caliber badges. Calling all one owners!!!
A Brumos frame just seemed right for my '73. I have to confess, it's not old though. They gave it to me just for asking a couple of years ago on my way through Jacksonville.
Not too close to me that I know of...but next car gathering, I'll ask around, see if somebody could take a badge pic, email it to me...what I find funny? Wayne Dempsey's 101 projects book suggests getting rid of the old badge and replacing with new as one of the projects... :rolleyes:Quote:

Back to original topic.
I have on old Brumos license trim ring, and will trade for a Chick Iverson, or Vasek Polak (old only....)
Thanks,
Eric
elinden@earthlink.net
Eric, out of curiosity is your Brumos piece much different from mine shown in the post above?
I believe the 'early' factory badges stopped being available around the late '80s ... Stoddard had the 'first' run of repros done about '89 and were excellent ... Stoddard jobbed them to the West Coast through Tweeks in Long Beach ... I know a couple of people that tried to buy them out... fortunately when I first redid my car in '90 I got the last one in the display case. Subsequent runs have not been the same quality. :(
I loaned my OE badge to Nic Roveda ... it was unfortunately stolen from a body shop RIGHT OFF THE HOOD OF HIS CAR ... of course they played dumb.
Nic replaced my original with one he got on eBay... I have another that was given to me years ago from Mitch Rossi... I keep the good repro on the car, and the two old ones in my tool box... :)
Here's a pair. One original with some weather and one New Old Stock (on an NOS car), that's never been off the car. Quite a diff'rence in appearance.
Jeeze Chuck, I can't get over the blue of your car. Holy crap what a nice color!
Thanks bud...
It's kind-of-a chameleon to the different light...
It goes from dark (purplish) to light (aquaish) ... and everything in-between
Good for the soul. :)
Yeah Tom, but then you wind up taking the remaining gold off, leaving a nicely polished bronze (not a bad thing). I like the patina.
I had to look really hard at the pretty one, I thought it may be a repro. But the thing has never been off the car. The badge has 3,865 miles on it.
Now back to topic, who has my Brumos license plate frame...and HOW MUCH???!!! :D
I have a Brumos frame not-for-sale, but I'll trade it for a Dick Barbour Porsche+Audi frame. Anybody have one?
Jack
Same for me.... got a vintage Brumos plate frame, but I want a Chick Iverson Porsche plate frame as trade.
Eric
How about a plate frame from the Penske Porsche dealership? Anyone?
... well, this pic has been up before, but I think it just fits right in again!
 :D ;)
There is a license plate in that photo? :)
Jens,
I will trade a Brumos for a Bill Yates Porsche frame or buy one if anyone should have it. Also have an extra Peter Gregg frame also to trade. Thanks.
Best,
Don
Don, I dug up an old Brumos, but the Peter Gregg interests me!! ;)

Brumos has some pretty faithful repros of their original frame, at least to my eye;)
Take a bow, Jeff . . .
What would help would be a listing of dealers, up to 1973.
Does anyone have one of those that they can scan and post here?
TIA
R
I know that Chuck got an interesting frame recently. Maybe he will share. =_)
I got this one this past weekend. Sorry for the crappy photo
Is that a yellow backround? Or is it white?
And is the 'PORSCHE' painted red? AUDI, too?
What about the rest? 'Chick, etc' looks darker.
no, just yel;low / chrome

The below pic is of the frame and plate that were on my car new on the showroom floor. I still use the frame today.
69 was the last year for Harmon Motors to sell Porsches in Raleigh, NC.
Also attached is a period 70-71 shot of the 911 dealer plate like mine on a showroom car (dealer is definitely not Harmon!).
I had to throw in a period shot of the used car lot of Harmon. Last pic courtesy of this great Samba thread:

That's a nice looking frame.
I know of a 73 Stoddard car with 39k original miles that still has the dealer stock sticker in the lower right corner of the windshield. Stoddard can supposedly still look the car up in their records based on this 38 year old sticker.
I'll try to get a picture of it and post.
Here's one...
Mike
If anyone ever sees....
"Cavalier Porsche Audi" plate frames, please let me know and Sithot and I can then fight over who gets them.
Porsche Corporate was convinced in the early 70's that Richmond needed a dealership, so they talked a couple of guys into leaving Heishman's or might have been Capital in DC to go to Richmond and open up a dealership. Porsche promoted the new dealeship by adverstising it on the side of Peter Greg's Orange #59 car that ran at Summit Point and later in what I think may have been the inaugural IMSA race at VIR. You can find archived pics of Greg's car sporting Cavalier Porsche Audi, Richmond, VA on the door. Porsche corporate didn't do such a great job choosing the folks to open the Richmond dealership and they were a little premature in their belief Richmond could support a dealership and it folded a couple of years after it opened.
I have a friend looking for a license plate frame from Masterson Porsche-Audi in Ventura. if anyone has one for sale, let me know..
This is the plate and frame that came on my '71E....now has WA plates but I'll keep these as part of the car's history

Endo911rs... I was told my PBH frame was from the dealership shortly after they purchased Westwood Porsche+Audi (in L.A.). Any long-time socal guys know when Porsche Beverly Hills bought the Westwood P+A dealership, and what year (span) the below frame is from?

The things I notice/look for on the older dealer frames are the appearance/presentation of AUDI.
First thing I look for is --- that AUDI appears at all. From the beginning, a lot of Porsches seemed to have been sold by Dealers who also had a VW franchise. But some time around '69-'70, Porsche's US sales organization was re-organized, becoming more associated with AUDI, less with VW. I remember the Porsche+AUDI signage of that time, kinda stark, plain. Over time, AUDI's association would fade away, and Porsche became a more stand-alone brand.
The second thing I look at is the way AUDI is presented --- all caps, plain font, no oval insignias, nothing but letters.
Like this one
Some kinda 'Tae Kwon Do' school-for-kids (?) thing going on, there, now
About all that's left of the dealership? . . .

Niello Porsche+AUDI, Ltd
1841 El Camino Real
Sacramento, CA
White lettering/dull red on flash chrome
No mention of any brand (so they coulda stuck this on anything).
The thing I notice about this frame is the checkerboard pattern embossed in the lower corners. See this on a lot of metal frames --- not just Porsche. I also notice the more elaborate opening, with the extra little 'flair' added to the top letter panel, making for a more interesting 'window.'
As time passed, frames seem to get simpler, boxier, textures/details duller, any extra effort eliminated --- less colors, for instance --- until? . . . just plastic.
Came across this, today . . .
. . . The Niello Company started with a man in possession of exceptional talent. Louis Niello understood automobiles. He knew how they worked. And he knew how to fix them. The son of Italian immigrants resettling in San Francisco during the 1900s, Louis Niello displayed an unusually high mechanical aptitude at age 10. He loved cars and anything associated with cars. He raced motorcycles, worked as a chauffeur and eventually landed a job as a mechanic at a San Francisco Packard dealership . . .
. . . Hard work earned him enough money to buy the dealership with a partner. It was 1921, America's infinite passion for the automobile had entered a new phase. For an ever larger number of customers, no longer was it about buying a car to drive, but about buying a car to experience. The young Packard dealership on Ellis Avenue quickly added the famed luxury line of Pierce-Arrow. The move also foreshadowed what would become a Niello hallmark; not looking at what's on the road, but what's coming down the road . . .
. . . Louis Niello's son, Richard Niello Sr., inherited the family business after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Pierce-Arrow was out of production, and Packard's days were numbered. Liquidating the dealership after his father's death, Niello Sr. briefly worked for General Motors in San Francisco. There he met two other young salesmen, Wes Lasher and Elmer Hubacher. All three would become lifelong friends and go on to found automotive legacies in their new hometown of Sacramento . . .
. . . With Hubacher eventually going into business on his own, Lasher and Niello Sr. partnered to form their own dealership and established in downtown Sacramento. In 1955, they started with a single make, a new German import poised to become an overnight success and legendary fixture on the American automotive landscape: Volkswagen . . .
. . . From then on, anticipating the next, newest, hottest and most distinctive automobile, they characterized the Niello name. After Wes Lasher left to form his own dealership during the early 1960s, The Niello Company continued adding relatively unknown makes and models destined to become the next must-have automobiles . . .
. . . As a successor to Lasher-Niello Volkswagen, The Niello Company established Niello Volkswagen-Porsche in 1963. To meet demands of the growing Sacramento market, in 1969 Niello Volkswagen moved to a new location on Arden Way and has been there ever since. The Niello Porsche franchise spun off and combined with Audi, forming Niello Porsche Audi. To date, Niello is the second oldest Audi dealership and the longest owned Porsche dealership in the country . . .
. . . Since those beginnings, The Niello Company has expanded considerably. In 1973, Niello BMW was established on Fulton Avenue. At the time, the BMW product was seemingly unknown to the Sacramento market, but all of that would soon change . . .
. . . In 1990, Acura was the next brand added to the lineup of fine automobile brands distinguishing The Niello Company. The Niello presence expanded in 1991 in Concord, acquiring an Infiniti franchise which has exclusively offered that brand ever since . . .
. . . The Niello Company then opened two flagship dealerships in the Sacramento area with Land Rover Rocklin (2001) and Niello MINI (2002) . . .
. . . With three dealerships opening in June of 2007, The Niello Company continued its growth in the Sacramento area with Jaguar Sacramento, Land Rover Sacramento, and Maserati of Sacramento. These exceptional brands propelled The Niello Company into providing the most distinctive automobiles to its customers . . .
. . . The Niello Company built a state-of-the-art facility in Elk Grove for its second Niello BMW dealership in January of 2008. At this same time Niello was the first dealer in the Sacramento area to offer the revolutionary smart car . . .
. . . The tradition of sensing the next automobile sensation is carried on by Niello's son, Richard Niello, Jr. To get a true feel for the business, Richard Niello, Jr. worked for a Volkswagen dealership in San Francisco before joining the family business in the mid 1970s . . .
. . . Richard Niello, Jr. became president of The Niello Company in 1995. His brother, David Niello, is responsible for Niello Infiniti in Concord. A third brother, Roger Niello, was a member of the California State Assembly, representing the Fifth Assembly District, and is now serving as secretary of the Niello Company . . .
. . . Still family owned, The Niello Company is the region's only privately held dealership group with a breadth of products that spans 10 brands: Acura, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Land Rover, Jaguar, Maserati, MINI, Porsche and Volkswagen. Its collision and repair departments service over 100,000 cars a year, and its employee team includes over 500 specialists, technicians and sales professionals . . .
. . . The drive behind The Niello Company remains the same: to find automobiles fulfilling the buyer's quest for distinction, innovation and adventure . . .
. . . Today, The Niello Company continues to reflect the passion of founder Louis Niello for automobiles, and just as importantly, for the people who love automobiles . . .

Hello,
I'm trying to find a LPF from Dieter Oest's shop. In truth I don't even know if his shop gave out plate frames, but perhaps someone has one they might be willing to part with?
While looking around for some history on Mr Oest I found some very cool pics. Here's a gratuitous pic of one of DO's cars from his racing days.

Ok... I'll play. Here is a photo of my "Brian Redman Motors" license frame. This was Brian's exotic and vintage car dealership across from Brumos. It was owned by Brumos, but Brian ran it. It didn't last long....just a handful of years... started in 1982.
Here are a few variations from Neufeld Porsche in Redwood City/Can Carlos/Burlingame, CA. Anybody have any info on the dealership?
Only that the dealership at 281 El Camino Real in San Carlos appears long gone from Google Maps...
Here's an old dealer handout...

A lot of Porsche Dealers started out/also had VW concessions. Looks like Neufeld & Freeborn, Inc dealt in VWs from before '57, becoming just Neufeld in '64, always in San Carlos, so they must've moved after '72
Thanks for posting! Very cool to have several frames from the same Dealer --- especially with PORSCHE on them and from several different cities.

My favorite are the PA cuff links...too cool...
I found another ultra-rare Brian Redman Motors dealer frame, from a source in Florida. I plan to post it, and offer for sale on ebay by the end of the week....for those interested.
Has anyone ever seen license plate frames like these? They have no slot in back to slide the plate into like most, these must really be old. Back side is just flat!Attachment 202024Attachment 202025
I'd love to see (or have!) a frame from Truman Motors in El Cajon.
Anyone here have that one?

That's great. My car was ordered from Gus Mozart, but with factory delivery never wore the dealer plates. Gus's son John was my rep, and I'll always remember him taking me for a ride in his silver '67 911S as part of the sales job, not that I needed it. The Mozart service manager, Rolf van Kempen, later became a great foundation in my short roster of genuine Porsche technicians and advocates, beginning with Herr Franck at Porsche in Vienna, Austria. Anybody every heard of the latter?
-Richard
I bought a case of 40 of these from a bulk sale on Ebay about 6 years ago. They came packed 2 to an envelope and had never been opened or used. All NOS. Came in a case that had a Postal code stamp on from 1978 ???? , so I believe may have been made around then ?????? not totally sure.
They were from a supplier that made these for resale to Porsche dealers and apparently went out of business.
Sourced from Southern Cal. and I gave a whole bunch of them away to my friends in our local Porsche club. Kept two each for each of my cars and a couple extra for future purchases.
VERY well made with a high chrome finish......I was very pleased with that purchase and immediately looked for more on the internet, but have never seen any again.

This one was really hard to find. My 1974 914 came from Kendon.
I ended up getting this frame from the UK. A guy picked up a VW bus and it was on it.
Kendon was on PCH in Wilmington near Torrance CA.
To go with your your Lavia plate Rick............ ;)
Naaa...... keeping the old jacket Rick, maybe someday I'll be able to fit into it again...... :oQuote:
I don't know, Chuck . . . I was thinking that frame would go well with your jacket . . . . and look real good on your car.
Was finally given a CIRCLE Porsche frame I've been look'n for, for 22 years ........ :)
Mine was a CIRCLE car from the boat......and so far always lived in So Cal.
The frame needs to be re-done (It has the '70's 'Gold Tint') but I'll get to it some day...
The challenge for me with most of these vintage frames is they were taller from bottom to top to involve all 4 license plate holes... Instead of using just the 2 holes on top and a 'slot' to hold the bottom of the plate on the newer frames. I'm so used to looking at the back of my car with the later 'abbreviated' frame, when I put the vintage one up against it, it looks too BIG... :(
.......... and so it goes
Hey, Chuck . . .
Now THAT is one b!tchin' frame . . . and thanks for the pic. Never seen anything like it.
Rick
You like them then.....I bet they really look good on your car.
The deal is , they have a real old skool kinda charm about them.
Not real glitzy, and of course they have no dealer connection, but in our case, I really do like the simplicity of just having the manufacture's name discreetly identifying the product.
PORSCHE.
I am almost ashamed to say how much I bought that case of 40 for......it was for 28 bucks and that included shipping. Came from a little, now defunct, maker in the Whittier ?, Ca. area , I believe. The name of the shop and the address is still on the box out in the garage...I can post it here if anyone is interested in knowing about the source. Maybe someone had dealings with this business at one time. Like I say, the original Pitney Bowes stamp is on the inside flap of the box, as the seller re-used the case when he sent it on to me about 5-6 years ago.
My guess is they were a mid 70's offering according to the dated stamp.
Ask and you shall receive! I too like the simplicity of just the "PORSCHE".

Ahhhh- haaa.......
You painted out the background black and wiped off the high points with a cloth soaked in paint thinner.
NICE !!
Left all of ours just plain chrome. My one friend who I gave a few to, did that trick like you and blacked out the background when he mounted it on his 930.
His car is the same color....Guards Red, and with all the black trim on it.....made for a nice complimentary acc.

Way to go, Pete! ---- never even heard o' this outfit. 'Harbor Cities' sounds kinda generic, but Wilmington was annexed by LA in 1909, still a district. Now next to Harbor City, San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles. Oil refineries, tank farms, container/truck parks, mostly . . .
Rick
Actually I took a black "Sharpie" pen and colored it in, didn't want it to be a solid black. Using the "Sharpie" gives it a faded black tint and keeps that vintage look! Car is Bahia Red BTW.

$427, huh? EeeYouch. Must be the ‘Monterey,’ ya think? . . . . there goes that neighborhood.
Price sounds about $327 too much, if you ask me, but --- what do I know? Most I’ve ever paid for a frame was ~$200 --- and I’m an idiot. Then again, I could spread that kinda damage over all the other frames I paid $20-$40 for so . . . at least I’m solvent. Or at least --- tell myself so.
Prices like that push all of this kinda stuff --- Polak/Iverson/Brumos/et al --- even further underground.
Look for this bit at the next Monterey . . . .

No doubt a lot of $$$ but the price is driven by availability and clearly there aren't many of these around. Dig those decals on that spyder!

I have this on my car now. I don't know anything about it but thought it was pretty cool. Has really nice patina... I get the sense it wasn't the best place based on a comment I saw on the 356 registry. One or two of you California guys must have some info.
Got my new issue of Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car magazine in the mail today........very timely.
If you all want to read a REMARKABLE short presentation in Don Wester's own words, along with pics of the 1966 Sebring race that caused insurmountable grief to those involved, get this copy today.
Its a gut wrenching account of several horrifying accidents and , at least to me, shots never seen of Don's own collection of the car that tangled with Mario Andretti.
Don was driving that 906 that day, and you can almost feel the grief come up off that written page and whack you right in the throat.
Gripping account, remarkable photos, and lives lost that day........combine to bring a tear to the eye of the reader.

Not sure how widespread the practice was --- or for how long . . . but some Dealers apparently issued their frames as pairs.
Now, that's not that surprising --- cars have two plates, after all . . . 'cept the frames in these sets were not the same.
The pattern/convention seems to've been to have the Dealership's name in the upper position for the front frame, then in the lower for the back, with the location in the opposite. Example below.
Production of these 'front-&-rear' sets seems to have discontinued by the mid-to-late 60s, leaving only the 'rear' pattern (location-over-Dealer) seen today.

Merlin Olsen Porsche Audi, Inc
15531 Ventura Blvd
Encino, CA
I first heard of/remembered Merlin Olsen --- 6-foot-five, 275 (and not much weight-lifting, back then) --- as an LT, LA Rams, and --- along with Deacon Jones, Rosie Grier, and Lamar Lundy --- one of the Fearsome Foursome, back when football was still played on grass/mud/snow/ice, outdoors, in swish-less uniforms . . . by Guys usually covered in body fluids and vegetable matter. Tough Guy. Played well. ’62 NFL Rookie of the Year, 15 seasons in the pros (missed two games), 14 Pro Bowls, left the League in ’76.
Sorta.
Worked as a football Commentator/Analyst, in the 80s and early 90s --- with NBC first, CBS later.
Actor, too. Little Screen (Little House on the Prairie, Father Murphy, Aaron’s Way) and Big (The Undefeated). And Pitchman --- ‘member the voice of FTD?
Business Man, too. Utah native, Mormon, second of nine kids (1st-born son), graduated with a degree in Finance from USU. Summa cum Laude. With a Phi Beta Kappa key. 3-time Academic All-American. While he was tearing it up playing college ball. Turned down job-offers from IBM and Xerox to play pro. Added a Masters in Economics in ’71. While he was tearing it up playing pro ball. Did I mention he was in 14 Pro Bowls, and that he’s in both the College and NFL Halls of Fame?
Oh yeah --- and between knocking heads and knocking out degrees, Mr Olsen, together with his Rams pal, QB Roman Gabriel, ran a travel agency.
And a little Porsche store . . . out in Encino.
Bought out his partner after ’74 (?) --- Mr Gabriel was selling real estate, out in Orange Park Acres, last I’d heard --- then sold everything when he retired (late 90’s?). Died of mesothelioma ---- was suing NBC, Fox, et al because of it, at the end --- 11-Mar, 2010.
Lotsa these frames floating around, still. Many with their Dealer cards, too. Frame's probably more appropriate for an ‘80s Turbo or 3.2 liter --- see ‘snowflakes’ on the back.
Not so appropriate for Mr Olsen . . . .
Small frame . . . Big Man

Rick nice write up on Merlin. Is the lawsuit ongoing for mesothelioma and what was the connection of this to NBC, Fox, etal?
I don't know about the status of the lawsuit --- I'm no attorney, but my guess would be that, unless his family/heirs had standing in the original action, any lawsuit brought by Mr Olsen would've died with him.
Regarding the original respondents, it's evident that Mr Olsen believed he had good cause to take action against the various networks that employed him. From everything that I've read, Mr Olsen was an intelligent, accomplished and formidable individual to deal with, known for being beyond-well-prepared in his business dealings. (Couple people commented that he would've made an excellent attorney.) But. If Mr Olsen thought that NBC/CBS/Fox had anything to do with his illness, then I would believe that he had something to back-up any claim he would make.
Mr Olsen was a hero of mine. I remembered him from his playing days --- a great competitor, good/clean, and totally fierce . . . very few people like that. Then or now. And to see him successfully move on, several times, as an entertainer, commentator, spokes-person, and business man made me admire him even more. I never heard a word about his health and legal issues . . . 'till after he passed.
I am not an attorney either...but I do have access to Google. The link below helps clear up some facts in the legal case and its eventual settlement:

new score. not sure what I will do with it since i am proudly wearing stoddard and my car is a few years too early for this frame -i think its early to mid 70s.. (though who cares about that, right?).
I have a 1967 ohio plate '912' hanging in my garage.. i might just put this around it for garage art.
The same day you put this post up, I had just put this frame on my car.
Merlin, Roman and the Rams were my idols back in my playing days. I found it pretty cool that my car was originally sold from the joint dealership.
From what I can gather, the Merlin Olsen frame is from after Merlin bought Roman out sometime in the mid 70's.
Been trying to find the below frame from that time (1970) since getting my car 2 years ago, with no luck so far. So this one will have to do till the Pièce de résistance is acquired.
Can anyone help a brother out?

For a company as widely seen/recognized as Robert W Brown & Co, I’ve found only very little information about it
The earliest reference I can find, dated 1957, has to do with a lawsuit filed against the company contending that they (RWB & Co) had violated a patent in producing a license frame. Short version --- RWB & Co lost
What’s interesting about the date is that California --- and, apparently, a lot of other states --- changed the size/shape of their vehicle license plates over to a more-or-less standard --- and different --- one the previous year
Any way, the company was in business until ~’79, whereupon the whole outfit was sold to a company called JayDie (still in business), who continued using RWB & Co’s tooling for a time . . . allegedly even issuing frames with RWB & Co’s logos struck-out and JayDie’s added in
RWB & Co was not the only company making frames. But, from what few types of frames I’ve seen, they must’ve had one heck of a business, producing stuff for a coupla decades, for all kinds of dealers, selling all kinds of vehicles --- far and wide. And while there is a listing of RWB & Co’s customers, I’ve absolutely zero interest in verifying whether or not any frame stamped RWB & Co was, in fact, produced by them. I bring this up because there are replicas/re-issues of several of the more popular frames --- I’ve seen them . . . . and spoken with those who’ve produced them
Yet --- no one has admitted to reproducing the RWB & Co identification on any re-issue/replica
As for me, aside from my own personal observations/impressions/gut reactions, I take the presence of an RWB & Co logo as an indication that the frame I’m looking at was made before 1979
Take these comments for what they're worth . . . especially given some of the prices being realized
Interesting...and similar analysis from 3 years ago...

Morgensen Motors was the first Porsche-VW dealership in Phoenix. Survived until the '80's. My dad cut his teeth there as mechanic and shop foreman until '73. That Shelby frame looks OG --- and is it an RWB & Co? Betcha that's some serious Bucks
Porsche Audi Motor Cars
580 Broadway Ave
Bedford (Cleveland) , OH
From the '72, '73 and '74 PDLs
White lettering on a medium (possibly once-metallic?) blue back-round, flash-chromed . . . like a lot of frames from this period --- early '70s?
Jeez --- not much imagination with that name. (Talk ‘bout playing it safe) . . . . but. Notice the detailing? RWB & Co #4
Standard '70 OH pass issue . . . grey w/scarlet to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ohio State University. X = Athens county
Thats kind of funny that its to commemorate OSU's 100th anniversary, but its in Athens, home of OU.
pretty cool to see teh cleveland plate though!
are you sure thats grey and red to honor osu's 100th annv though? looks a lot like my 68 plate which is red and white..

Hey, Harry . . . yeah, not too clear in the pic --- and I don't have a white OH plate to compare it to . . . but it looks like a soft kinda dove-grey

21555 Roscoe --- zat next door?
Interesting. Especially that first address . . .
. . . ‘cause that’s also the last one listed for Competition Motors, 1970. (More on that subject later . . .)
Ogner no longer has their Porsche franchise, but it looks like they got it started when they took over from Competition Motors at that same Woodland Hills address, probably around/after Johnny Von Neumann sold everything off ~ ’71(?) Like Von Neumann --- like a lot of Dealers --- Ogner began with VW, first as Ogner Bros, Ltd (’61 thru ’66), then Ogner Motors after . . . but apparently, the VW biz was always in Culver City (?)
Anyway. Dull black lettering on a dull white back-round, flash chromed, RWB Co. I’m noticing how some of RWB Co’s usual detailing --- the texturing of the ‘back-round,’ the fine cross-hatching in the lower corners --- is missing
Plate is a 1st year 6-digit (numbers/letters) CA passenger --- the so-called ‘blue-plate.’ Reg tags were issued yearly, back then, with placement alternating between the upper wells, until ’77, when CA DMV began issuing month-of-expiration tags, placed in the upper left, year-of-exp stickers opposite

When it comes to Porsche Dealer frames . . . . this one’s the Loch Ness Monster, for me. I remember looking for these back in the early ‘90s . . . . and they were already totally under-ground. Saw so many replicas/duplicates/re-issues, I began to doubt whether originals ever existed. So finding one . . . .
Anyway, for me, the most famous/storied Porsche Dealer ---- period . . . going WAAAY Back, all the way, to the Very Beginning of Porsche in this country. What Max Hoffman did for Porsche’s street cars, back East, Johnny Von Neumann did for their track cars, out West
Johnny Von Neumann, born 16-Dec ’21, Vienna, son of a prominent surgeon, emigrated to the US in ’38 with the Anschluss (the German annexation of Austria)/approach of the war, ARMY Intel officer during, then came out to/stayed in California after
Started selling cars in ’47, opened his own business in ‘48, fixing sports cars in a two-car garage with some buddies, started racing . . . then began selling VWs in ’52 --- trucked them out himself --- from NY (!) --- him and his 1st wife Eleanor
So. Hanging out with Hoffman in NY one day, Von Neumann drives his first Porsche, likes it, buys it . . . . then drives it cross-country to CA . . . before they had Interstates . . . the 1st Porsche west of the Mississippi
Never looked back
In ’53 (?), moved to . . .
1219-F North Vine Street
Hollywood, CA
. . . . then . . .
1730 No. Highland
Hollywood, CA
Maybe even Inglewood?

Raced Ferraris, became a dealer, too (in ’57) . . . allegedly so he could get better race cars. Worked-out for him. Big time. Received the 1st customer Testa Rossa. Important Ferrari Guy, too --- bugged The Old Man to build a big open-topped GT. The Result was a car better known today as the California Spyder. Racer/team owner . . . in Europe, Mexico, South America, Nassau --- had Jack McAfee, Phil Hill, Ritchie Ginther, Ken Miles driving for him. Hired this young Czech Guy to wrench and tune, too --- a certain Vasek Polak. Famously sold a 550 Spyder to some Flash-in-the-Pan Hoosier by the name of Dean. Sold + raced cars, partied, jet-setted . . . . Von Neumann was in the middle of it all, commercially + competitively. And making money
By ’69, he was into other things. Divorced the 1st wife --- she got his US Ferrari dealership --- then took off for Switzerland, where he'd owned the Ferrari concession since ‘65, sold his Porsche/VW business back to the factory ~’71? Cha-ching
After the Car Biz, imported/sold yachts out of Italy with his long-time pal Chick Iverson. Even started a little venture leasing Learjets for executive travel . . . sounds like he invented that business
Spent the last years of his life bouncing between Switzerland and California, got married, again --- had a little girl (go, Tiger), passed away Christmas Eve, 2003
Now, some four decades since his last showroom closed . . .
(--- You Concours Guys may wanna leave the room, now ---)
. . . found in an avocado grove, out in Fallbrook, attached to what was left of a ’67 Type I (as in VW) carapace . . .
Dull white (I think?) lettering on a dull green back-round (upper)/the reverse (lower)?, flash-chromed, no maker’s marks . . . . but who cares? After only a coupla decades-or so out in the elements --- just check-out those rust-blooms! . . . a total ruin. (Only chrome left was under the heads of the bolts that held it on)
But, in all my years or car bummery --- rummaging around in countless yard/garage sales, swap-meets, junk-yards, spider/rat/scorpion-infested barns/lock-ups, land-fills . . . never seen/touched/held one of these in the metal . . . ‘till this
So if this is as close as I ever get? . . . . . so be it
Plate is the one it was found attached/fused to, black plate CA, reg pass issue . . . last registered in ‘89
Good stuff. Love hearing old stories and really love seeing the old black & whites. Please keep posting.

Attachment 213900Attachment 213900Attachment 213900Rick,
Here's one I restored about two/three years ago with new brass plating and correct color paint. I pulled it down to take the photos and it looks like it's just corroding sitting in the garage. Bummer.
John
Oh heck...I don't know what happened to my photos. I think I just had a brain fart!

Fantastic find Rick... hope you keep the patina

One of the earliest US Volkswagen dealers, started in ’54 by a Guy named Joe Vittone --- an enterprising fella who didn't like throwing stuff away just 'cause that's how VW wanted him to service their cars. Started a little VW parts outfit he called European Motor Products Inc. . . . better known as EMPI . . .
