A lot of people and adverts mention Kardex information which i assume is the original porsche factory specification of each car produced.
How can one obtain the Kardex (preferably a photocopy) of an early model (1968 911L in this case)?
I have a Certificate of Authenticity for my car but copies of Kardex's I have seen online seem to have more information.

....yes because by that time they did not use Kardexes. Kardexes were always warranty cards - they recorded all the information needed to cover the administration of the warranty system and that seems to have been computerized after 1970 rendering the hand written/ manual kardex system obsolete. They still had build sheets which were very comprehensive but, like the build sheets for cars during the Kardex period they are rarely seen outside the factory. I think that they may be available "in principle" as they exist but not available in practice except in very special cases. I have seen perhaps 3 or 4 build sheets ever.Quote:

Would a Kardex be available for a 1970 914-6, a late build German market car? It would be nice to know the who and where about the first owner(s). The known history starts in 1984 in Germany.

My 1970 MY 911 was built in 12/69. Can I get a Kardex for my car? Did the changeover from the Kardex system occur based on the calendar year of was it tied to the model year of the car?

Porsche is making it more difficult every day to get this information, but at this time I can still get kardexes for every Porsche built until 1969. Basic rule is: when your VIN starts with 119 I can get it. When it start with 911 I can't, so probably that's when the changeover started...

Erik, thanks for the quick turnaround. Was able to identify that my car was purchased from the Mahag VW/Porsche dealership in Munich and first registered to a fellow in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (small ski village in southern Germany). Good starting point to fill the remaining gaps in my car's history :-)

On the subject of when the Kardex went out of use, I have previously been able to source 1970 Kardex's from other sources so they were in use for at least SOME 1970 cars as can be verified by the Kardex for my 1970 911S.

Extremely valuable for locating former owners. Located both first owners for my two 912s. One first owner lead me to the second owner.
Anyone good at deciphering German handwriting form the 60's?
First owner is printed on Kardex and company exists on the same address.
Second owner is written in such a way that for me it is not readable. I can make up Stuttgart but the rest not..

I was just recently thinking about trying to get a copy of a Kardex for my car. 1970 Kardex seem to be quite rare. I have obtained a couple but only after verifying that it actually exists. Several others I was told that they do not exist, even with consecutive VIN's. The problem arises if you do not verify in which case you may get nothing useful for your money.
So what happens now with a request for a COA?. You give the chassis and engine numbers to the factory and they say " yes those are correct" or "those numbers you gave are not correct" ?

Chris, yes that is essentially it. There is a new form for some German owners where clear photos of all 4 sides of the car, and the various serial #'s to be confirmed are also required. So far my source for Kardex has been quite good, so I hope it stays that way.Quote:

By using my existing CoA and provding proof of ownership (e.g., copy of title or registration), I was able to get PCNA to provide the assembly completion date of my car: April 27, 1970. As that leans toward the end of MY1970 production, I'd be inclined to think that a Kardex doesn't exist for the car. Still, if there's a Kardex for 1511, I'd think there should be one for 1476.Quote:

Sorry, Ben, there is no Kardex available. However, I can get the data available for the car, and make up a CoA-type of Report. It is unofficial, about as detailed, and much less expensive.

There are also Fahrzeug Auftrag or Production order sheets with similar information that were used on the production line; these are known from 1970 on. There are also the production books that record the daily record of the car's data and completion date; do not think that any Kardex date or CoA date is a completion date. They are NOT! The completion date resides in the production book or on the F-A. The Kardex and subsequently the CoA/PPS/CTC only have invoice dates or dates of retail sale. Did I beat the Kardex word to death yet?
Available. When the computer records were being created about 1969 it provided a better way of keeping ever increasing volumes of data. Now it was faster and easier to look up the data on a car. So to assist distributors responding to requests for information on their Porsche, the Kardex cars were scanned, and the computer printouts were scanned; but only the Kardex up to 1969 model year needed to be scanned (one car at a time) whereas the printouts had 60 cars per page. So only those Kardex scanned into the digital archive are AVAILABLE. I do believe that Kardex cards continued in use for many years past 1969, but as far as I know they were either not scanned or the scans have not been available for distribution.
To sum up, some Kardex are available from 1950 through 1969 with a very few 1970. Others are not available. Some F-A for 914/6 are available from me also. Pseudo-CoA type Reports are available from me for 1970 and later cars. Email for info.

It said Light Ivory with red Vinal.
Is it possible that if i contacted Porsche they would find a different record (other than the Kardex) that would confirm these colors?

That would be Vinyl, or Leatherette. I believe the Kardex is pretty definitive on this subject. It is possible that there may be other records. The Production book makes no mention of colors. However, I doubt very much that they would be willing to look for them. It seems to be a very closed subject to them currently.
