Wouldnt the cars for sale section be a better place for this?
I think that Targa was on EBay, wasn't it? Could be the beer I guess. (Reward for the last week working in Texas and the hell it was getting out of there)
How'bout this ... let switch, and stick, all of it on the Classifieds...

If anyone can help a true Early S phile get back into it- looking for an S Coupe that will go to a good home- NOT to an oversees reseller.
EarlyS member since 98, I sold my last early car for a 993 widebody about 5 years back ..much to my new found dismay.
Looks like we are left to sift through the 'basketcases' andTs.
Anyway- something I ran across.. 70S Targa for 19k asking:

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Eric. With the same inventory ID# on the web page, I wondered if it had gone anywhere or not. So do you think this ~20% price hike in the last year is indicative of where the market has gone?Quote:

All covered previously.. What about the upside down koni's on the rear, I haven't seen that before.. Really Nice car though..
just as a reference point 308519S has green guages as well as 2 screw horn grills..
I just saw this 1967 911S on European Collectibles web site. From the photos and description, it looks to be a very nice car. No price listed.

Asking price is $85,000.

Tom, I "think" the market is +20% vs LY. However, whether this car is overpriced or not is another thing. It would sell easier with a "correct" color. You are right, the factory did phase things in over time, who's to say this car isn't correct with these gauges, and the other later car is wrong with the green gauges?:D Nothing is absolute.Quote:

Show me another 67S for sale right now in the US that's this quality so we can do a "comp". I think sometimes people get too wrapped up in the small stuff. Whenever I buy a car it's the big stuff that I worry about...the last 5% won't make or break the car for me.

This car is offered in the classified section of the registry for 55K OBO.
I'm no expert, but it looks to me as if a lot of what should be on a '73 S is missing from this eBay car from a high-volume flipmeister... # 190154753786
Does anyone have an issue with buying an Early S from its owner- putting 20+k on the price- and then selling to whoever-wherever- just to make that money.
I mean these cars going to Europe arent coming back- as in ever.
Those cars are gone from the pool for good.
Once theyre over there- theyll be passed through generations without ever being sold again.
So when all the toys are gone, and cant be traded around between us kids.........i guess it will all be worth it right?
Or maybe its just me.
Early 911S on sale 30% off!...if you pay in Euro or Pound.
Per Certificate of Authenticity this car is absolutely 100% correct, other than it's added Oil cooler loop and Partial dealer a/c,Quote:

For my part buying a car, putting $ 10k-20k or more into it, then selling it to whomever I want, seems reasonable...Quote:

When the Euro was introduced it only took 83 cents to buy 1 Euro, and I didn't hear anyone complaning about the RSs and other Porsches that were imported INTO the US, the Europeans were glad to find buyers, and we were glad to buy them and bring them to the US.
I will personally say my sorries for importing 10 more or less early 911Ss, and RSs to the US during that early period....
However the loss or gain depends entirely on where the real money is, ie: on the strength or lack thereof of the Dollar, if it gets back to parity, then the cars will come back, simple economics,
not based on the actions of single owners.
Let's please not forget when almost every rare Porsche was going to Japan in the late 1980 and early 1990s, now they are slowly coming back..........

JP
I'm not sure I understand; "Gone for good"? Just because they aren't in the USA they are gone? As someone who has lived on both sides of the pond and taken cars back and forth over the last 30 years to enjoy as a collector, I can tell you with certainty that many of the cars leaving today will be back as soon as the dollar recovers from the gang beating it has received from this administration.
Please, politics are not the subject so let's just accept that the last 7 years have been very good for overseas buyers looking to buy excellent, rust free examples of cars (that they produced) be it Porsches, Jags, MGs, MBZ etc. I don't see them buying American Muscle in any numbers so I venture to say they are coming here to buy the cars they always wanted when they were growing up but could not afford. Gee, that sounds familiar doesn't it? Not all the cars are going to a subterranean bunker in Switzerland never again to see the light of day.
Lastly, before anyone equates the exchange rate in simplistic terms with a 911s at %30 off, let us also understand that there is a huge value added tax in every Euro country as well as conversion to road safety equipment and configuration that add a further expense and a total not too far from what we pay in the US for the car. Shipping is reasonable as we can't seem to design cars that the Euros desire so space going that way isn't too hard to come by!
There are plenty of Porsches for sale at any given time but we need to adjust our method of measuring. Are there plenty of straight frust free "no excuses" cars for $40,000? No but there are at $100,000. Which...... just isn't a lot of money to some folks used to paying $500k for a Cobra or $1.2 mill for a D type and heavens, $100k for an Austin Healy!
Yeah kids..
What I was getting at was in reference to the 69 Sunroof S Burgundy listed here in Classifieds for months now.
I tried to buy the car as a keeper but the car was close to be under a purchase contract with buyer.
My loss- ok.
However- this buyer was reseller -fine ...but
I could have bought the car at 45k, it is now for sale for 64500...which is fine.
Thing is that price basically takes it out of most our hands- puts 20k for the house there- and most likely it will go abroad, thanks to a weak dollar.
Simple Free Trade I suppose...
Doesnt mean we should like it.
Sell to the highest bidder - yeah... but remember we are dealing in a scarce commodity item.
Eventually if it continues- we my find our pond out of fish.
I'll take a $100,000 for mine right now. There are other "sandboxes" I'd like to play in.

1971 Porsche 911S Targa on Craigslist

You sure don't see these around here very often. I sure wish there wasn't an entire continent between it and me, and I had the space, and the spare $$$, and... :o
This one also appears to be a '68S, but non-matching engine and missing a few bits.Quote:

The car needs new badges, the paint is good but there is a small bubble on the hood and it seems a shade off of the factory color. The fit of the panels is OK, but the driver's door needs to be rehung and the fenders need slight adjustment for better gaps. The dash has typical crack just past gages on the right and the steering wheel leather is hanging on, needs re wrap. The door panels are ok but the pockets are trashed, the carpet is the cheap aftermarket stuff and the front clip has some fiberglass that looks to be an attempt to fill in rust from battery. It needs chanbe back to dual batteries, the floor pans look pretty good, no visible rust around the body. Transmission needs 1st gear synchro, cold start needs reconnecting/rebuild, needs new shifter couplers, rear wheel could use new bearings.
I was thinking about dumping $3K into mechanical issues and about $3K into cosmetics (RS door panels, new badges, steering wheel, dash, carpet) any suggestions on where money is best spent will be welcome as well.
Now the real test:
VIN 119300954

What's a right offer? This car sounds like the parts are more than the sum of the car, at this point. From experience, you will have serious problems selling a disassembled car for anything out of the upper $20Ks. With rocker damage, I'd be worried of getting even that much. What is unfortunate is that, from the photos in pre-disassembled condition, the car looks like it would have been a near $40K car. If you really want to sell it, reassemble it, as-is, and sell the new parts separately.Quote:

The price range for vintage Porsches seems to be all over the map. From the low 30s to 100K, by looking at this thread. Our 69 911S was purchased in 87for $6000. It was appraching the 20 year mark and I presume the lowest value it would ever hit.
I'm not planning on selling it, but I'm just curious about the benchmarks that determine the price. Racing VS original equipment and the like. I understand that we are in a recession, so prices have fallen off some. Just looking for some general info, thanks.

Hi there I have a 1968 911s Targa and is located in Canada. Its in good condition and looking for some advice. Is there anyone out there that can tell me the value of the car as I am at the point of either selling it or spending some more $$ on it to make it 100% original. Its a # matching car but has been flared. I have been told that only 422 of them was build in that year trying to find out more info on it.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated
primitive911s,
Don't mean to send you on a goose chase but try posting on the "General Info" section of this forum and you'll get plenty of responses. Cheers,

There were only 8, 2.2S coupes imported by Porsche Cars Great Britain into the UK in 1970, the cost new was £5,000.00. Manufactured in November 1969 it is still in its original special order colour, Signal Orange. Fabulous original car with a comprehensive history file and only 1 owner since 1973!

Here is a chance to own a very rare car. This 911, 2.2S Coupe is one of 44 UK right hand drive cars supplied by Porsche Great Britain in 1971. The car is currently being extensively restored through our workshp and will be finished in its original colour 'Metallic Blue - 324'
The 911S for sale is a D-Series car manufactured early 1971 and was registered in the UK in July 1971 - Chassis number 9111301294.
The car has been in the same ownership since 1987 and over the past 5 years the previous owner has invested a considerable amount of money in the engine, suspension and brakes.
http://www.export56.com/carsforsale/....asp?SaleID=11
Here is your chance to own a very rare and desirable car. This SWB 911S 'Soft-window' Targa is 1 of only 718 built in 1967. This car is currently undergoing a full restoration in our workshop and will be finished to original factory specification and painted in its original colour, Polo Red (6602).
BACKGROUND TO THE MODEL
Porsche introduced the 911 Targa in mid-1966 to an enthusiastic audience anxious for an open 911. For the first model year in 1967, only the soft rear window was available. A year later, the glass rear window was introduced as a far more durable alternative. By 1969, virtually all Targas were glass rear window models, even though the soft rear window remained an option through 1971.
The 911 “S” was Porsche’s top-of-the-range sporting model throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period when the purest and most desirable versions of the 911 were produced. The 911S boasted a higher fifth gear, anti-rollbars front and rear, Koni shock absorbers and ventilated disc brakes. The engine was also improved with higher compression and improved breathing which produced 160 bhp.
DESCRIPTION OF THE CAR
The 911S Targa for sale is an O-programme car manufactured in late 1967 making it one of the last Targas built in 1967 - Chassis number 500684S, Engine number 960541.
This car was purchased by us from California and is one of the best examples of an early 911 we have seen, very little rust and no sign of accident damage. Unfortunately the car had been colour changed many years ago and had lost some of its original body panels; engine lid, front bumper, and front quarters.
The body restoration is currently being carried out in our workshop using original SWB factory parts, the car will be completely stripped, re-panelled and painted in its original colour (Polo Red - 6602). The interior will been re-trimmed including new headlining, carpets and front and rear seats. All rubber seals will be replaced and all brightwork has been stripped and rechromed. Light units and lenses have been replaced with new original Porsche stock and 2 new battery have been fitted. The original 4.5 x 15 Fuchs alloy wheels and centre caps have been stripped, polished and painted and anodised. The engine has been stripped and rebuilt by us, including new cylinders and pistons. The original Webber 40IDS Carbs have been stripped and rebuilt and the car has been fitted with new SS heat exchangers.

Vehicle received new paint finish about ten years ago. The features are complete, including original Recaro bucket seats.

It's now on Samba... I'm interested in this one and have sent the seller a request for more info. Is anyone familiar with the car?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifie....php?id=647650
The rear panel is slightly curved, something I haven't seen. Is it an aftermarket piece? Thanks for any assistance!

Thanks Dave, the seller is Rich @ California Cars in Thousand Oaks. He provides the VIN 9112301265, engine #6321812, and color 132-9-1 ivory.
I'm waiting for undertray and wheelwell photos, as welll as pics of apparent rust on bottom of passenger door and fender. Car is supposedly from Virginia.
http://www.californiacars.com/cardb/details.php?id=397
The rear panel is aftermarket fiberglass, and he believes paint to be original.
Interior needs carpets, dash and detail, electric SR works fine. AC complete and functioning but needs service.
Nice color combination, attractive for the climate here in Florida.
Recommendations for a reputable service in that area to do an inspection would be great.
I've been looking for a decent S, and looks like I missed the '68 w/2.7RS at Auto Kennel. If this is a solid car I'll be happy.
Many thanks!

I've been to California Cars several times to check out their 911s that they have had for sale over the last year or so. I never saw one that I would buy from them, but that's not to say that this car couldn't be the exception. They are 10 minutes from my home.
Their ad says Factory air conditioning. Not so, the dashboard pieces is a VPC unit and there is no compressor on the engine.
Regards, Brad
Interesting rear-end treatment...
They have this '69 S for sale as well...
http://www.californiacars.com/cardb/details.php?id=411
Thanks for the A/C info, Duane and Brad... I know the car's been for sale awhile. Tom, in Florida everything is rusty.
A crappy Cali car looks pretty good compared to some of the fright-pigs offered here! :o
I like '72s and if this one's been taking up space for so long, maybe an offer well south of asking would make it a possible...
Yeah, I'm a masochist. :D
This is a very collectible 1972 911S sunroof coupe with matching 2.4 liter MFI engine #6321812 with Carrera chain tensioner update, the only year with the external oil fill door, factory A/C car, 5 speed transmission, factory fuchs alloys, tan head rest seats and a solid original chassis. This is an unrestored survivor that runs and drives excellent. The perfect addition to any Porsche collection!

"We're in ususual times. Very wealthy and solvent people simply have no cash flow and can't borrow money to raise cash".
So, where does that leave the "everymans market" (911's)? Downward pressure on prices is what it means.
Tom
Does anyone know the prices at which several outstanding examples have sold at this dealer: http://www.2-shores-classics.com/gar...nt-offers.html
I remember this car, it was on Ebay the week before it was offered on CL in the above pictures for $36000. It was in Pahrump Nevada with a Buy it Now of $25000. It was taken before I had a chance to run up there to inspect however as seen in the above CL ad a week later, here it was with the PO's Ebay pictures and all for a premium of $11000 above.

FWIW,
I bought this car. It is a really nice car. Front bumper has some dents and the hood has some paint chips that were poorly touched up, but the rest of the paint is almost perfect. Interior is a 9.5 out of 10, motor pulls nice, 5 speed shifts very smoothly, and the underside, rockers, trunk and battery areas are original and perfect. One of the nicest early 911 cars I have seen. Dave also was an honorable dealer. Did everything he said and there were no discrepancies.
This is not a paid endorsement! ;)
Here are a few more pic's of "the shoe"
Another sign of a soft market?

"Another sign of a soft market?"
Not really. I got my price and "Goldie" is heading back to Zee Fatherland this weekend. ;-)
Yes, *really*.
You may have gotten your price BUT you didn't get it here.
There is a discount for goods heading in that direction. A $50,000 car costs €33,958. A $100,000 car....€67,920.
1 Euro buys 1.47 (and change) dollars today. I'm surprised that they aren't buying everything we have "on sale" but the economies on the Continent aren't setting the world on fire either.
I hear of cars going back all the time. It will continue as long as the economy struggles and our currency remains weak.
Tom
I agree that prices in USD are attractive to Euro-based collectors, but you have to add transportation, import duties (10%) and national VAT (ususally around 17-20%) to the selling price in the US.
I usually read 1$=1Eur to take into account of the costs.
regards,
Andrea
G:
The VAT is a tariff that we couldn't get away with but Europe seems to find perfectly justified. I find it annoying.
Our government talks about import tariffs and catches hell from other countries for even whispering it. (I'm against tax increases.)
You really shouldn't be able to have your cake and eat it too.
Is there a black market? ;)
Best,
Tom
I have heard of situations where the value of items went down considerably to avoid VAT/tariffs/taxes. Had this not happened the items would have encountered a significant price increases. Some countries have such an onerous tax system that they almost force this behavior. I mean; Who decides how much is enough?
So, does anyone want to pay me a bucket load of money for my car so I can buy a new one? "When they're buying, sell. When they're selling, buy." :D
There is a glut of new stuff out there!
Tom
that's a fairly common way to lower the taxes. I've never bought a car in the US, but somebody told me that there's a way to avoid EU VAT by importing via a country where VAT is not due on historical cars. Not surprising, given that VAT regimes in EU are far from "harmonised".Quote:
,.... as I have recently seen some sales where the bill of sale was made for a lower value.
Andrea
There have been bought a lot of cars lately from the US and imported to Europe.
I live in Belgium, next to Holland and watch this:
suppose I buy a 911 2.4s for 60.000 dollar
I ship from New Jersey to Antwerp, Belgium
60000 price car
2000 container + shipping cost
12600 VAT + 6000 import tax
1000 handling fee to get it in your garage and arrange all the paperwork
81600 dollar or 55500 euros...
same thing to Rotterdam, Holland
60000 price car
1500 container + shipping cost
3600 VAT
500 handling fee ...
65600 dollar or 44600 euro!!!
after it is in Rotterdam there is no tax to get it from Rotterdam to Antwerp
What do you think about that?
It is perfectly legal...

The seller makes the 3 most common mistakes when presenting the car:
1. Long winded presentation of the model but not the car itself
2. No pictures of the underside of the car
3. Provides the VIN and engine number (both are correct for the year) but fails to mention if the numbers match

Matching numbers 1968s for sale.

"This is a very nice 911, Easily A DAILY DRIVER ,,1967 Prosche 911 S,, with a VERY STRONG T motor. I bought this 4 years ago from a guy who had it in his garage for the previous 16 years. This car has not been rained on in 20 years.. It was broken and had been stored for that long, he never fixed it. I purchased this and made the necessary repairs and now it is inspected and roadworthy and has been for the last 3.5 years. In EXCELLENT CONDITION. I have receipts for over $6,000,, in parts that I have purchased since the acquisition of this vehicle. I have done Nut and Bolt restorations on many German and British Cars. I believe this is a S car with a T motor. I have the Porsche "Birth Certificate" More pics available, email me with questions.. FIRM PRICE USD. BUYER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPPING .. This car has been living in a covered garage for the last 20 years. I have been told that if this car had the S motor and the 100L tank in it with the sport seats,it would be in a class all its own."

Sale 18297 - Les Grandes Marques a Monaco, 30 Apr 2010
Monte Carlo
http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/publi...leSectionNo=2"
Lot No: 156
1968 Porsche 911S 2.0-Litre Coupé
Registration no. 892FLX92
Chassis no. 11800607
Engine no. 901/02 4080813
Estimate: €40,000 - 60,000
. . . or ~$52-79k . . . for us non-Continental-types.:)
Doesn't that estimate seem a bit light, considering how few '68 Ss there are to begin with --- and the car's condition, originality, and miles? I would think just about anything from that era would've pretty much rusted away by now, especially 'over there.'
Rick
I thought it was the color --- the door looks a shade darker than either the front and rear quarters, at least on my monitor.
And yeah . . . looks weird.
Need to go to Monaco --- see for myself.
Rick
You gents may end up selling cars here as the Euro gets hammered.
BTW: I wouldn't be sending anything to Greece, Spain or Portugal on a "promissory note". ;)
Sit back and watch the circus here but the EU looks about ready to "auger in".
Greece is going to raise taxes and reduce salaries (unions need it but not the rank and file). Should be interesting. Sounds about as witty as our current outfit. Raise taxes in a recession. Worked really well for Hoover.
Tom
It looks to be the Euro's turn to take a dive. ($1.26 as I write this) Should be some nicer cars available and some better prices as people begin to get real and realize that their car won't necessarily get snapped up and shipped to Europe. The Wilhoit "S" car is probably a good barometer of things. How quickly will it sell and for what? He seems to have the market blanketed with ads for it. Is it too late to be running for the door? We'll see.
The door was shutting 2-3 years ago, believe it or not. If you were new to the game then you paid too much. Living in denial is tough for some.
Since I care less about profiteering, here I am for better or worse. I could have sold all of my motorcycles (if that's what drove me) for a lot more in 2007 than I can now.
The auto publications irritate me with their wandering diatribes about the market and then I realize they in the business of selling magazines. One writer says it's raining and another says it's sunny. These are the same lemmings that wanted your money for a "muscle car" and now have the audacity to say that the ship has sailed on those. (saw that one before the ship came in!) Must be nice to be able to short the market while selling LONG.
Just like GS and others were touting the investments that they themselves knew to be crap, folks who sell for a living don't ever yell "fire". At least not until they are out of the burning building.
I'd hate like hell to be in the position of looking for a qualified willing buyer for a mid-level collector car that has now lost its "charm", economics not withstanding.
Sure was fun when it wasn't abut "The Benjamins".
Hold if you can.
As far as I'm concerned, the 72T I sold in March is 10x the car this one is. 100% documented, window sticker and all.
Tom
Well said,
Market is a lot softer than in 07-08
These are great cars and if you can hold them, great,
If you paid too much, well you either enjoy the car,
or take a hit.
Now they are only appreciating assets if you are the one who appreciates it
Or you bought it before the speculation began
Living in Europe I have seen people pay more for sport seats than
what a few early cars sold for pre 02.
I never thought I would see an Austrian actor running California, either
So should we be looking for some exceptional deals in the future out of Europe? I'm still in the market for a 550 Maranello, just waiting for the right time to pull the trigger.
Buy what you "like"...
If you're using dollars as your only consideration you're likely to be dissappointed in your purchase.
Similarly if you're waiting for that "golden opportunity" to buy the right item at just the right price, you're likely to be dissapointed. It's not as if you can put a "buy order" in on your ultimate deal, this isn't the stock market.
If you're not buying on emotion, then why are you buying?
Do you put a dollar value on every drive you take in the car? Do you enjoy just "looking" at the car in the garage?
This discussion of taking this hobby down to just a pile of money, and also comparing "woulda, coulda, shoulda" is certainly not exactly inspiring. I didn't get into the hobby to have these discussions... I was a little kid when I started, and my heart still flutters when I drive, look at, or work on my: cars, literature, parts, etc.
I don't usually take part in these discussions on "value" and how anyone who bought in the last 2 to 3 years overpaid... really? As a car guy, I know I've looked at all kinds of cars at swapmeets, on ebay, on a dealers lot, in Hemmings, etc. and though "gee, that's not a lot of money". It's a frame of reference, perhaps the guys who are "in the know" in that car club might think it's too much money, but to me it looks like a good price because of an early 911 frame of reference or whatever value I put on it. I know there's lots of guys who buy early 911's because they like a particular car, or want one for a collection, perhaps they paid too much according to where this thread has gone based on my reading, but perhaps they just liked the car! Maybe they're never going to sell it! Maybe it's cheap by comparison to what else they collect! Maybe they've waited for "just that car". I know I've overpaid for cars, parts, literature, you name it, but I "wanted" it.
You can go back to your discussion now, I'll get down off my soapbox. What was it that Paul Donkin used to say? "they know the price of everything, but know the value of nothing", something like that.
cheers,
E
Doesn't everybody want to get the best bang for their buck?
The market is the strongest it's ever been for those 99th percentile cars.
It's softer in the middle and near-dead at the bottom.
I've sent 9 cars to Yurrup in the past 14-15 months, so this isn't from third party observation, reading Bruce Anderson or sitting around a campfire.
When I've sent cars overseas, the Euro has ranged in the $1.3X to $1.4X rate. I suspect that at $1.26, a lot of our cars are still considered bargains. That's certainly what I'm hearing, anyway, from people with money to invest.
From a currency standpoint, the last couple of days have been a bumpy ride, but that's when real traders make money.
The bottom line is that every economic fluctuation can make profits, but nobody is making original '73Ss anymore.
