Does anyone know what the “M8” in the door frame is all about?
Does M mean something?
Does the 8 mean anything?
Is there anything other than M8?

AS they say, the last to ask has the chore of finding the answer.....Just kidding, its been asked a few times and AFAIK, No one knows!.......cliff
I always thought it was there because my car is my "mate" but I now believe that because Peugeot rolled Porsche over on the 901 designation they were wise enough 1/2 a century ago to foresee a possible BMW M8
:)
all i know is that if your car is missing this, chances are the body area has been replaced or altered
If I'm not wrong they changed the pitch of the bolts for the hinges from 8x1mm to 8x1.25mm sometime between 1965 & 1968. The M8 stamping is probably to identify the later bolt pitch. At the same time they increased the thickness of the backing plate to provide the same number of threads engaged. The engineers will be able to confirm but depending what school you went to its either 3 or 5 threads for full strength.
That's what I discovered from playing around with a few hinge posts anyway. Also the early hinge posts are a completely different shape around the hinge recess and also the curve above the top hinge.
That still sounds abit daft to go to all the effort to put m8 into the stamp die. After all its still a m8 bolt what ever pitch!
it`s a complete different A-pillar tool...not only the M8 was added.
and M8 is always 1,25 pitch =regelgewinde
if not regelgewinde it is has to be stated
an other detail that was changed was the latch for the door stop...the corners where rounded in order to avoid touching the door corpus when shutting the door.
