At last month’s Registry meeting we noted we had the biggest one month jump in new registered message board users at about 450 in 28 days… that’s not counting all the spam I nuked. That’s about 16 new registered message board users every day!!!!!!!!!. In that same 28 day period we got about 20 new paid members to this club….. I just don’t get it......... :(

- Is the welcome prompt (to join the club) not getting through?
- Do new message board users NOT think this information resource is worth 2/3rds of one tank of gas a year?............ :confused:

It's worth being a paid up member , i feel guilty otherwise ... anyone who is selling newly manufactured parts here should at least be a paying member if not a paying advertiser . which reminds me chuck i need to pay for some ad's in the mag

For early 911s, it is undoubtedly the best club in the world.

Agreed. There isn't any real incentive to being a paying member over a registered member, if the primary thing you are looking for is information. I like the quarterly magazine and the sticker I get in the mail once a year, but I'm really in it for the fantastic information resource, becoming aware that parts I am seeking are available for purchase, and the "networking opportunity" with like-minded folks. I'd like to think that every once in a while I have something of value to contribute ;)

I view the subscription cost as both an entertainment and tuition expense, understanding that actual resources (i.e. $$ from somewhere) are required to keep the thing running. In fairness, I went about a year without paying for this service because I didn't have to. Unfortunately, conscience alone is not a sufficent motivator for everyone.

Agreed, not only post images, but view as well. And not just sell, but also even view the classifieds...along the lines of the PCA site. Some would say this put undue restrictions on the size of thee audience for our paid members who have posted classifieds, but PCA solves this by offering a temporary subscription for those who are looking to buy a P-car or parts but aren't yet members. A serious buyer would gladly pay a reduced fee to see what's in the For Sale section imo.

To answer David’s question:

The ratio between registered message board users (you can see the stats at the bottom of the front forum page) and the paid S Registry club members is roughly 10%.......Of course that’s NOT including 60% more ‘guests’ than registered users at ANY given time on this board.

The main goals of this board has always been to expand the knowledge base and opportunities for our small community… and so far we think we’ve done a pretty good job.

Well, through long past due recognition of our cars (with their accompanying financial escalation) this once small community has sky rocketed exponentially.


We will take all these suggestions under consideration………

However, until then, I suppose the only tool we have to rely on is our non-paid message board user’s sense of fairness…

I'm a multi-year paid member. First of all, big thanks to Chuck, Mike, John and crew for all their efforts. I think you've done a fantastic job. This is a great resource for anyone interested in 911s and related topics because of the depth and breadth of information available, including the pictures and the classifieds. If the pix or classified were restricted to paying members, I'd expect to see much less of that content, and over time the value of the site would decrease for me. As I see it, the cost of membership is a great bargain, even with the free-riders. I think the free riders bring some value to the site when they post information or classifieds. Without sufficient traffic and content, its hard to sustain a site. In a just world, everyone would join and pony up to support the site, but in the here and now that seems not to be the case, so maybe site traffic is up to a point where some on-line advertising could help pay the bills?

Maybe advertise the existence of Esses as a paying-member-only magazine a little more ? The membership price is worth it just for the magazine. The Forum is gravy.. Or is it vice versa ;-)

As someone who only registered a few weeks ago, I was pleased with the information on the board, and would have joined soon thereafter, but I'm very lazy when it comes to printing out a form, entering information, finding a stamp, and then mailing it. The money wasn't as big of an issue as finding a stamp :). So if you would include an online way of joining, it might encourage others to join. (I sent in my application today)

I (and quite a few others including you Chuck ;) ) are members on the Australian Typ901 Forum which has grown to be an excellent resource for us Antipodeans. It is a paid members only board with restrictions on viewing photos. This seems to be enough to encourage the $50 per year entry ticket... Remember the Aussie site is a small 200-250 odd member board, but it seems to self sustain nicely - have a talk to Clyde for the exact stats.

My point is that I think you'd be no worse off closing down non-member picture viewing (and PM abilities etc...). Some free loaders will hiss and spit and maybe disappear, but anyone who realises the true worth of this board will coin up pretty quickly :D

Chuck, why is there such resistance to making a members only area or other members privileges (photo viewing, posting in classifieds, PMs)?

This suggestion comes up every time we're asked how the site could be improved for members and it's never been addressed.

The technical difficulties in reconciling the paid membership with the online registrations seem manageable, I for one volunteer to help if this
is what is preventing us from having an elevated privilege level for club members.

I was the first person to respond to this thread and erring on the side of caution, I kept my opinion to myself. There are you FOUR doing an absolutely stellar job, then 2,216 active members with a total of 10,865 members. I am assuming "active members" means dues paying of which I have paid for 3 years now.

I totally agree with Andy as why is there such resistance to having a tiered level membership? Further, Luke-44 mentioned how the PCA offers temporary subscriptions. Well, why not? Pay to play.

You could restrict photos, only reading the 1st page of a thread, no ability to post questions or ask for selling advice and so on. Paid members should have their own big sandbox and you can't get there without paying.

I would be willing to bet a case of Brad Penn that the usual suspects on most of the leading threads are paid members. If I understand the statistics correctly, that means about 8,500 people are unpaid and not financially supporting the club. In my opinion, if nothing is changed, then next year and the year after......you will be seeing pretty close to the same levels of paid vs. unpaid.

It's not a money issue with me. Shoot I'm lucky enough to own a Porsche and I have the $40. I just don't think it's right or fair for 20% of us to support the club and the other 80% glean the benefits of this fine website.

That's my 2 pfennigs worth.

We wish 2216 'active member' stat was how many paid members we have... No, that stat has to do with those registered message board users that most frequently post..... Our paid membership is a little over half that.

I guess those 90% are the no tax paying 47% that Romney talks about. So the 10% of us support the other 90% financially. Where have I heard that before ? I don't really have a problem with that, but I for one am happy to pay taxes to this fine establishment. I've learned so much and hope to be able to share more in a decade or so when I become a full patch member. I'd "encourage" some of the 90 percenters to pay up as well, perhaps with limited picture viewing, no classifieds priveledges etc. Thats how most boards I belong to work. A quality product warrants a premium price.

I have been in the Porsche arena for a very long time and one certainty, there is always something new and valuable to learn from others. It is not necessarily the professionals, but the individuals that own one car and have a burning passion about their cars that is a joy. I am always amazed in the early 911 and 356 circles the amount of good information that comes from that route.

If folks don't realize that a nominal subscription is well worth the price, they will once their access is limited.

I have been joining few weeks ago and after a very short while, I decided to become a paid member, why ? Because Early911s is different, there are so many forums on Porsche and cars in general, so many crappy stuff in these forums with tons of adds poping up to yoour face, fake answers and most of them are claiming for money to become A Member.
I am one of those who is playing with the IT since 30 years, and have seen many IRC, ICU, BBS, etc..
This forum is really different from the others, it is unique, beleive me. I laught at loud when reading some responses, and had teardrops while reading in the last ESSE article about the Brown 911S.
There is acommunity of passionate here, people living their passion without taking care of what other thinks. It is a breath of oxygen in our everyday life.

So yes, money is needed. will you pay for a forum without trying it ? Registered members would need to try before. Do not forget that many of the users do not meet each others, which may explain. The physical meetings make you feel you belong to somme real community. Even in 2012, we are still human being.

That said, I like the idea of a trial for non paid member (view one page only per topic) and the sales/research for paid member only. I am not a fan of putting adverts on this site.

One more thing, I still cannot beleive I am one of yours :-) I am proud of it.

I believe you should keep the forum open for all so that info continues to flow. I am a member and believe in paying to play, but if you want to, see what could happen if you close this board and make it private, stroll over to the 356 Registry and see what has happened to their forum due to "going private". It is not a good thing.

Open or closed to membership? It's typical on many levels to other clubs' quandary.

As a cautionary tale: A number of years ago a local autocross club started a high speed driving event annually at my favorite track BIR. They had been previously invited to another clubs (single marque) event but once that clubs participation grew to fill it's roster the invite was no longer offered.

The autocross group started their own high speed event, found a spot on the tracks schedule and ran the event for four years - it was a open "run what ya brung" event. Cars eventually came from four states to enjoy. Muscle cars, sports cars and sedans, single common draw was the driving at speed. Started small and grew into a self sustaining event and started to add a little profit to the clubs treasury. Fun event. Fifth year the host group decided that this should be a club only perk. Length of membership was a requirement to limit the outsiders. Plus lots of other similar changes. General event attitude came across as not very friendly. Few smiling faces that day - sorry to say it folded - that was their last track event. They had something good - wanted to make it better - ended making it different but not better. As I said, a cautionary tale.

This site like other Early 911S Registry club activities, especially the "Esses" magazine is not only stellar - it's working. The reason this site attracts users is because there is a common good and the cars and people are both way interesting.

Spread the word on membership....it is worth it.

I happen to be one of those who recently joined, at the suggestion of some R-Gruppe members, to find out if I can put a factory rear condenser onto a ducktail; I'm in South Florida where A/C is definitely need.
I'm now in the process of looking into buying an older Porsche. My Veronica is an 87 coupe with approx. 61,000 miles. Eventually, she will be my daily driver; right now she's driven mostly on the weekends and sometimes during the week when I get tired of my WRX wagon :) . Lil Blue is fun and practical and has given me 10 years of pleasure. However, since getting Veronica, it has been an incredible joy, one that I had been dreaming about since I was around 13 or 14 years old (the time when wooly mammoths and saber-tooths roamed the earth). I do plan on either selling Lil Blue or giving her to my son, though if he gets the job he wants when he graduates in January, he wont need a car; he'll be in NYC. I've been quietly talking to someone regarding an older 911, and if it happens, my membership money will be on its way to you.

Why check out as a guest and fill inn all the contact info every time??

Why not just get a message: Sign in to the boutique like you normally do, choose renew membership and proceed to checkout??

I tried this today, but when trying to choose two years international member I got the message: "The maximum quantity allowed is 1" When I finally gave up and proceeded to checkout to pay for one new year, the two year option was there after all. So now I can relax for a long time :)

Being a paying member is for me a question of integrity. The ESSES is world class, but what I pay for is access to this forum and all the info here that has helped me so much.

The world is changing. When I was a kid, I spent approx 50% of my hard earned cash on LP´s, cassettes and CD, now people just steal music, and I´m not that much better myself.. If people are not getting the good music for free they will just listen to something else...

It is a bit of the same here and you can´t fight that trend even if it is wrong. I try not to judge and some of the most interesting people I have met here are non paying members. If you make things too difficult for those who are not willing to pay, they will just go somewhere else and that is not a good thing. We need all the best people and parts to be here!

BUT: What pisses me off a bit is that it is the paying members responsibility to update their profiles with membership status to show everyone they support the club. I do not understand why it should be allowed to sign up, post enough to be a "senior member" and they stop paying and you will forever have a profile that looks like you are a serious supporting member..

I think all those non paying "senior members" should have their profiles changed to "guests" or "users"

IMHO - the "Senior Members" are the PAID Members ONLY! As noted above - Everyone else should be users or guest members. You can become a Senior Member with zero postings as long as you pay the annual dues. If you don't pay and you've posted 20 million times - sorry lads you are just a guest or user. I hesitated for a month to renew my dues as I think it's really unfair that 10% of the user base foots the bill for this great site. What made me decide to re-up is the great improvement in the the quarterly magazine. Major step forward and kudos to those responsible - great job. I have been a paid member for 4 years now.

Besides the magazine, I think PAID (e.g - Senior Members) should have extra privileges such as all access to photos, posting of new threads and so on. If you don't pay, OK fine but you can't post to any thread or see photos. Pay to play! It's a lousy $40 and if you own a Porsche you can certainly fork over a few dollars to contribute. Besides if 60 or 70% of the users contributed, dues could be reduced to $20 since there would be a greater over-all income to the Registry.

I'm a recent member, unpaid for now. I just tried to do the online membership but the payment option is is paypal only. I don't use paypal (several ongoing issues with them) so I only have the snail mail option available to me. I usually use a credit card for online payment, any plans to include this option?

Ok, here's a little input from an early, former, Early "S" Registry member. I joined this group back in the days of Vern Lyle, probably early 1990's. Even had my car pictured in the Esses magazine at one time. In the mid '90's, the group would organize gatherings at Parade, usually in a local pub. After attending one of these gatherings and being ignored from those gathered, I decided it wasn't a group for me.
I have visited the web site on occasion, and enjoy the discussions and technical offerings.
As an owner of a '67S for 38 years, and doing all of my own work all these years, I've undoubtedly forgotten more than I know. Maybe I can share something along the way.

I have a question, I was late getting renewed this year (don't remember seeing an email) and missed getting my fall issue of Esses. Is there any way I could purchase one? I love the magazine. It always draws attention from visitors when they see it sitting on my coffee table.

BTW the last two years my paid membership included an extra contribution AND the extra for that wonderful calendar!!! Every time I visit the site I gain more knowledge. I am going to be dangerous one day! ;)

I cant believe a year has gone by. I PROUDLY renewed my membership yesterday, and got the latest Esses. It is an INCREDIBLE issue, full of wonderful photos...Kudos to all the put Esses together, to you, Chuck for running this great board, and the the rest of the staff here.

Just renewd also, its the best money invested. The wealth of knowledged by some of our members is amazing. It takes a lot of human effort and financial to kkep a site like this one up in running, i dont see why no one would want to joing fianancialy, since you get more out of it, than what in my case put in.

I am with other too, that if your not a paid up member, you should have no privaleges, no pic, no selling buyin etc.

Next step to i will join the 901 in Australia, great guys down there.

Same here, check books and credit cards are not as common in The Netherlands as in the US.
Wit a paypal donation button or something like that, it would be more easy to pay.

Initially I was just browsing to learn about all things Porsche, but soon I found this forum is such a great resource that I had to become a paid member.

I own a 1973.5 911T which was originally sold in Burlingame/San Francisco CA in May '73 and the car was - for what I know - since 1987 in New Jersey
still with its first owner before I became the second owner.

The 911 is a great car with a great concept and this forum is definitely a fantastic source for everything early 911s.
I am looking forward to make new friends, learn new things about the early cars and enjoy this experience.

Just received my first edition of the ESSES, great read and very informative.

I've been a frequent user of this site for the past 2 years.
I am somewhat embarrassed that I never got around to paying up and registering.

Today I finally committed to fill out the form and send some cash...

...now I have a few questions.

I currently own 3 long hoods, all of them are '73Ts (actually 1 is a 73.5)
The Online Application only has room to input data for 1 vehice, so I downloaded the Member Application Form to see if there were other options. The downloaded form states "If you own an "S", please include this essential vehicle information."

So my questions are,
Are you only collecting info on "S" cars?
If not, how should I enter the info on my multiple vehicles?

Anyway, I'll send my money once I get a reply.

Hi Chuck,
Actually they were both built in April '73:

The COA says #1113 was manufactured "during April 1973" and "delivered and sold in the USA [in San Antonio Texas] on 1 May '73".

The COA of #1078 says it has a Production Completion Date of 1 April 1973 and was delivered and sold in Paris, France, and its date of first registration shown on its original French registration document is 16 May 1973.

Mine was built in April, shipped to U.S. in May, and sold in Long Beach CA. on June 13, '73 ........

And interestingly not recorded as sold ('retailed') to P.C.N.A. until Sept.... :rolleyes:

The number of registered message board members/users is posted and updated close to bottom of the Forum's front page. As of right now they are 22,374 registered message board members. At any given time you can see who's on the site as a registered member and as a 'guest'. A guest is someone who can look at what's going on without being able to contribute or view pictures. We usually track about 3 to 1 guests to registered members. Right now there is 126 registered members and 413 guests viewing the board.... remember this is a public forum.

Out of the ever increasing registered message board members (and, of course, not counting 3 times as many guests) we are lucky if we track roughly 6% of that as paid Registry club members.... :o

It certainly does, it means that about 2 to 3 % of the people who visit the board pay to maintain it, and provide a free service to the other 97%. I've been a paying member for over 10 years now and find these stats quite upsetting.

This board has become the principal reference for early 911s and the service we provide is quite valuable for a lot of people.

I'm with those who think at least some areas should be restricted to paying members. Maybe not all the forum, but some sections, or posting could be restricted or viewing pictures for example.

Some other boards have taken the route of placing adds, that are only shown to non-paying members. That at least would increase the revenue.

And the bottom line is that anyone (or 99.999%) of those owning or thinking about owning an early 911 can afford the dues with no problem.

Just my 2c.

Not sure, a clear definition of what makes an active member would be helpful.

If however most of those active paying members turn out to be payers on a constant basis, year by year, they would be subsidising 50% of the active members of this year plus all the guests, and the same next year, etc. And even though the percentage of paying members to active members is probably closer to your number for any given year, the fact would be that a small number of people, maybe 3 or 4,000 have been paying over the years, while there might have been 50,000 people enjoying the site over that same amount of time.

In my case for example, I have probably been paying for 10 straight years, I am registry member 666. if total members are currently at over 22,000, it means that over the last 10 years close to 22,000 new members have registered. Some relevant information could include how many of those 22,000 new members over the last 10 years have actually paid, how long they paid and how long they remained active (again without knowing exactly what active means).

Chuck can probably provide us with more specific numbers if he decides this is valuable discussion or if it is a nice exercise in futility.

I've been a member here (registered, unpaid) for a while now. I do most of my reading and posting over on the bird. I've had a 911 (again) for about 3 years. I bought a 71 Targa in 2012 and quickly decided I wasn't a Targa guy. Sold it and picked up a 71 Roller and have spent the last 2 years doing a mechanical restoration. Paint is an old single stage respray. The car had been sitting in a Porsche race shop in St. Louis for 20+ years. The owner had plans to make it into a race car. But I think it never happened because he has several other race cars already. I found a 71 T motor that is rebuilt with E pistons and cams. Zenith carbs. I'm a couple weeks away from putting it on the road for the first time in years.

I've never joined here because, frankly, it seems like it's a little bit too exclusive in some way. Hard to describe, but I felt like an outsider every time I logged in and started reading. Anyway, I figured I'd give it a try and paid for a membership. There is a lot of good info here.

I was actually a bit surprised by this because it's a club magazine.

I'm a new member and after spending one day on the registry I felt guilty for not paying the subscription fees. After a week I feel so glad that I did given the wonderful support and very helpful advice I received.
I know this might not be aligned with the registry's general strategy, but as I stated it before this site is Solid Gold, and the subscription should be offered for free only during a trial period after which members need to subscribe to keep their access.

That's just my $0.02

You won't believe it but I just found out this thread exists.

I started as a paying member put I simply forgot to renew. And indeed... I got no Esses anymore...

I think we are all very busy people...

You won't believe this neither... Please make it paid with proper automated reminders and blocked access if not paid in time.

I just tried to pay my membership again, but noted no PayPal is accepted and the credit card section is not secured?

We have switched from PayPal to 'Moon Clerk' earlier this year, better for us, and better tracking on the back end...

Moon Clerk's credit card feature is supposed to be as secure as any....


You can always go to the bottom of the page, print out a new application and send to Michael Hammond with a check....

However their membership form can be pasted in to a non https site, like the forum, which is where you are getting warnings. We will be changing the membership link today so both the form and the page displaying it are https compliant and 100% secure.

After you've become a paid member you should recieve a moonclerk payment conformation..

After that, it all depends when you joined.
If you joined well before the quarter's mailout date for the next ESSES, will be included in that quarter's mailing.
If you joined close to or after the quarter's mailout date then you will recieve your ESSES in one of our 'new member catch-up' mailings...

Our new ESSES, 30/4 Winter issue, should be in the mail this week...
