I saw the Velvet Underground at the great Grande Ballroom in Detroit in early 1969 as a college freshman. Nico sang a few songs, although some people thought it was actually a man in drag 'as Nico'. Who knows? The thing that I remember most is how bad the girl playing drums was. The most monotonous drumming I've heard - before or since. I do like most of Lou and John Cale's music though. Lou was certainly one of a kind.

The girl playing drums was Moe Tucker and her limitations as a drummer became a model for many of the early punk bands that followed 10 years later. I just heard an interview with Jarvis Cocker who said he went to see the Velvets in the UK. There weren't many people there and after the show he went to the dressing room door and asked to talk to Lou Reed. A few minutes later he came out and as Jarvis said they had a pint and a nice discussion. Excitedly Jarvis told his NYC friends about the encounter and they told him that Lou had left the band months before and he was actually talking to Doug Yule who replaced him!
By the way Jim, you saw the Velvet Underground, wow.

First heard Lou on vinyl when in high school and was utterly blown away. Coming from a sheltered background hearing lyrics about tranys, hard narcotics, and utter disdain for everything establishment really opened my eyes. Have been a life long fan ever since. Rock on.
