So the Webers were taken apart and soaked..... Unclogged a bunch of crap in them, and they're now properly jetted. New plugs are in, and the ignition timing is set right - it only had 18 degrees in total...... Also, the throttle linkage was set so it only opened up about 40-50%.
Engine sounds MUCH better now.....
Also discovered that the passenger side emergency brake shoes and hardware were missing. Lovely.

Be sure to flush the gas tank. After continually screwing with my webers, I finally did what I knew I should have done to begin with. Now everything is as it should have been from the start.

Got my Rennshift shifter as well as "turbo" extended length tie rods from Elephant Racing today. I can't wait to feel the Rennshift. The short shift kit in there now feels like crap.

Doing a few things this week..... Changing the ride height. The car sits too low for New York roads.... While looking at the rear, found the trailing arm bushings and spring plate bushings are shot. The trailing arms are so bad, I can't believe I didn't notice while driving.
I was having shifting problems, and found that the shift arm had loosened up.... Actually didn't think it was the shifter immediately, because it's a 50 year old car... But I was having problems both in 1st and 5th. Just happened to notice the shifter was cocked funny while sitting at a light.
Going to probably change the fuel pump too. I think it's dying. I get sputtering at different speeds and temperatures. I sometimes see the fuel pressure moving about when working the throttle. I wish I had a in-cabin fuel pressure gauge to watch while driving.

So, life with 417 continues on.... I've done some small stuff, like replacing the dash lights with LEDs, etc. Changed out the wires, and put in a Pertronix at the end of the summer.
I've still got two things driving me nuts.
1 - The shifter. I can't get it adjusted right to always go into 4th. 1st-3rd are perfect. 4th will sometimes go in perfect, other times, it just flops out. I don't think it's the transmission itself, but I'm not 100% sure. Any sure way of checking this out?
2 - Even with new plugs, wires, the Pertronix, re-jetted and new emulsion tubes, I still have a sputter (sounds like it's coming back through the carbs) Only happens under load, and seems to only be at part throttle. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Seth

I found an engine case exactly 100 lower than what was originally in my car. 9xx6xx vs 9xx5xx.
From a future value perspective, is it worth picking up and holding onto it, or should I pass and see if the original can ever be found?
I really don't plan on bringing the car back to original myself. I'm thinking for a future owner.....

A few housekeeping items needed taking care of I finally got around to.
Replaced the leaking gas tank.... The car no longer smells, and I've now got a working low fuel light which is nice.
Also changed out the old Moto-Lita steering wheel. It was way too small and not very attractive. Put in a Prototipo with a Nardi solid hub. It's nice, but the damn thing squeaks a little bit and I haven't figured out why.

Nice project Seth, I recently purchased a 66 and struggled with returning it to original. A previous owner had put flared fenders and quarters and when I got it the car sat on cookie cutters so I put a nice set of polished Fuchs and doing a bit of work on it while I drive it for the balance of the season.
It's a good car to get an education on as I'm not mechanically inclined, a friend is helping me out so it's a good opportunity to address items needing attention.
Enjoy,
Mike

Looks like another case of "throw it together and paint it resale red" looked great in the pictures:rolleyes: We see this way too often. :(

Looks like a fun car, and sounds like a great project. Think of all the work and little things as bonding with your car :) Nice thing about these cars is you can always work the bugs out with enough time and money.
