Just joined Early S Registry - Bought a 1968 911S Soft Window Targa yesterday
I've owned Porsches for over 40 years. Currently own 4 356's, a 911T, 914 Bumblebee and even a Porsche Tractor. Been a member of the 356 Registry for years, decided to join the Early S when I bought this car.
Yesterday I discovered a 1968 911S soft window about 10 miles from my house. 40 years ago, my second Porsche was a 1968 911L Targa hard window. Beautiful car, but sold it just before I got married. Later I regretted selling the 911. It had some rust issues, but nothing too serious. About 5 years ago I bought a tired old shell of a 1968 911L off of ebay for $500. I was dismayed when I realized it was the once decent car I had owned 35 years before.
Thought about it last night and today I bought the 1968 911S. It is a much nicer car than my 911L was 35 years ago. I suspect it was last driven about the same time I owned the L.
True barn find that has been in storage since the 70's. Euro-delivery car that only spent a few months in Europe when it was brought back to Oregon by the owner. Unfortunately the original owner got seriously ill shortly after that, returned to Europe for treatment and subsequently died. His parents couldn't bear to drive the car or part with it so it languished in their garage for several decades. The fellow I bought it from bought it from them several years ago planning to put it back on the road, but never got very far. Five years ago he took the engine and transaxle to one of the premier 911 engine builders in the area for a total build. They are done and the engine has been run in on the dyno so it's all set to bolt back in.
Still has all Euro gauges and lights. No rust (even the exhaust pipe for the Gas Heater is in great shape), no accident damage and still has all five original Fuchs. Rear bumper, deck lid and all of the interior pieces are in excellent condition - not sure why they were removed. But it makes it easy to see how nice everything is that is normally hidden!
