Summer rush... ten have died so far this season. Looking at the images reminds me of the BB King classic "The Thrill Is Gone".
Ridiculousness of mammoth dimensions... there may be substantial benefits to the local economy, though the Sherpas risk quite alot.
What is truly absurd are the number of "climbers" too old or out of shape willing to pay for their bucket-list fantasy, deserving of pear-shaped outcomes.

I’ve seen shorter lines for a new coaster at Six Flags.
People are so image-driven these days it’s no wonder this is happening.
Outrageous and completely foolish.
Shame on the guides and the companies they represent.
I’m sure Mr. Shea has some commentary on this.

I was going to bring that up, Rick... besides the litter and cast-off gear, remember there's also human waste is measured in tonnage.
A lifetime ago I engaged in sometimes risky behavior; spelunking, free solo climbing, downhill skate boarding, and extreme survival camping.
Everyone I knew into the same stuff was serious about leaving no trace. On a cave my cousin took us to in Alabama, we relived ourselves
in bags and carried it out.
From what I've read about the guides and companies servicing Everest seekers, money is more important. The place was a special, rare thing. It's isn't anymore.
I'm old enough to remember when climbing Everest was a huge deal. A classmate of mine did it and later said it destroyed his marriage and his health and was one of the few things he regretted in his life. But he has a photo.
My understanding is that all those people in that queue are breathing bottled oxygen and likely have been for the prior 2000+ feet. Some will run out while waiting.
Having said that, my own brother climbed K2 and was not negatively affected.
